Argyle three ways: Prep school cool, Collegiate casual, Polished professor

When Angie posted about argyle, I thought I had an argyle sweater but it turns out it was plaid. So I discovered I had an argyle hole in my wardrobe! And in my usual fashion I had to hunt down ALL the options! Here's what I came up with. Three argyle sweaters and argyle socks. You can tell me if you think three argyle sweaters are too much and I'm being too extra, LOL! (I may or may not listen though, I already tried and ditched four or five other argyle options, so this is already the edited version!) I like the two burgundy ones, I know they are similar but they have a bit of a different feel, the collared shirt is thinner and more casual. Teal, mustard and rust accents are my other autumn colors, so maybe the cardigan is not too redundant? Both #1 and #3 are La Ligne, Hamish sweater & Hamish cardigan. I was tickled to find Ralph Lauren argyle socks to match the sweater in 1! And #2 is Edikted from Nordstrom, it's cheaper and an oversized boyfriend style. Pre-planned the outfits so I could post them all together, and maybe wear them this week.

Here's the argyle life story in my mind--#1 is the cool prep school girl, she's valedictorian, but she's also got a bit of a rebellious streak and wears leather skirts and carries a goth Allsaints tote and wears burgundy Doc Martens with burgundy argyle socks to match her sweater. #2 she's in college at Stanford (my alma mater) and embracing the California casual lifestyle with the sweatpant jeans and slouchy bag, but still matchy matchy with the burgundy sweater, burgundy stripe jeans and burgundy leather bag. #3 she's now a professor and this is the polished look with an argyle cardigan (the equivalent of a tweed blazer with elbow patches), glasses necklace and burgundy trousers. Still wearing her Doc Martens, but she has now upgraded to a Burberry work tote and Chanel for the evenings (the diamond argyle pattern echoed in the quilted diamonds on the bag). I never lived on the East Coast or went to prep school, but this is what I imagine they like to wear out there! Tell me what you think! Which one is your favorite? (Still have the tags on, so you can tell me if I should get rid of anything too--a little on the fence about the cardigan and trousers!)

I LOVE #2. I have a fondness for argyle but need to style it in a way that plays down the preppy angle, so that is my favorite.

I loved 1&2. The burgundy&white argyle is so fresh looking on you-or is just my love for a column of darks  and some contrast with whites for Spring(?)- but not really a fan of the other one. Loved the stories as well!:-)

I love these and I'm not even an argyle person. 1 is fantastic and edgy. 2 and 3 are relaxed and sort of unexpected. You have nailed project argyle! Fab x 3!

These are great. I love #2, those jeans are perfect. And gotta love matching socks!

I do not know hiw you created #1 but it is fabulous. Cute but still an adult. Wow. I i like the colors/ contrast in that one the best- just beautiful with your coloring- but won’t try to talk you out of any others. Unless you want to try to hold out for a less muddy background in a teal/ mustard one. And track pant outfit is great juxtaposition. Juxtaposition of sporty + tailored and Prep is part of my style, so I might try to create something similar , not necessarily Argyle but similar vibe.

Love your argyle collection !  I'm not a wearer of argyle myself - honestly it's not a pattern I see at retail much here and it's a bit masc looking on me....but I love the second look with the side striped jeans!  Very cool !

I personally don't wear much argyle. I have one knit with a subtle argyle pattern. That said the first knit you showing is my favourite. I like the fit. Because argyle is preppy it is the one pattern I prefer fitted. Personally not a fan of the cardigan. It's because it looks more murky than saturated and I prefer saturated. The black pants look like a good essential, if black pants are essential to you IYKWIM.

These are all great. I love your striped jeans!

All are fine but the first and second have vibrancy and your burgundy color ( it is "your" color in my humble opinion ;-) ). The stories behind each look are adorable - love it!

Wow!  This is preppie but so fresh.  Love them 2x argyle in #1.  And the argyle with the wide legs in #3 is great as well….But…the burgundy argyle with the burgundy stripe in #2, my fav!  So so good

I love the colors in the cardigan, but it’s not as great in person as in the picture.

Pics #1 = KILLER to the Power of KILLER

Natalie, I can't think of anyone sporting a leather skirt with argyle socks, argyle sweater, and Docs as well as you!! WICKED.

("Extra" is your middle name ;) )

Looking super cute in #2! The burgundy argyles are sufficiently different to my eye, and the Terry jeans are fab!

I like the earthy cardigan too! I'd like to see it with non-black bottoms though. Blue jeans, earthy pants, pattern mixed with a tee or dress. Maybe a skirt.

I like #1 best, especially with the matching socks.
I caution about the wisdom of buying 3. Are you really going to wear them all or are you just going to clog up that wardrobe space that you recently made look a lot clearer? This opinion will be unpopular with some Fabbers, I realise that, but you did ask. I feel personally way better with a downsized wardrobe from 200 items when I joined YLF 9 years ago to about 150 for a few years now, seems more of a sweet spot to me. Of course we are all different. Up to you!

Great collection of argyle. Outfit #2 is my favorite because I adore how the side stripe on the pants ties into the argyle color of the top. Simply lovely!

  • UmmLila (Lisa) replied 5 days ago

I really love the first sweater and how you’ve styled it with the skirt.

  • Carol B replied 5 days ago

I like them all, but #2 is my favorite. The casual vibe appeals to me.

  • Karie replied 5 days ago

#2 is my favorite, followed closely by #1. I love the jeans in #2 also!

  • Jonesy replied 4 days ago

I love all of these! I like the blue and burgundy sweater the best (that color combo is so interesting, and works beautifully with your hair), but I think all of them are great. But maybe you don't need three argyle sweaters :)? If you wanted to narrow down to two, I'd go with the first burgundy and the last cardigan, just for some variety.
