Ask Angie: How to dress older/younger but still be age appropriate?

Angie,
We are having an interesting discussion on age and how we are perceived by others.

Usually most people want to look young, but some of us look too young and want to look more mature. I saw your fabulous post on how to dress your age:

I would love to hear any additional thoughts you might have on how to dress to look younger or older, while still being stylish and maintaining age appropriateness (ie without resorting to juniors clothes and miniskirts, or dressing like a frump). Thanks!

    GP,
Thanks for posting this thread. It should be interesting to get Angie's viewpoint.

Seconding this request, as one who's having a tough time walking this tightrope (excessively matronly vs not taken seriously).

I look much younger (5 years) younger than my actual age( due to small frame, healthy hair and skin), and I dont know whether to dress as my age 30 or as a 25 year old. Help needed for me too.

Since we've got multiple threads going on, I'm not sure where the best place is to put this, so I'm going to throw it into the Angie thread. Maybe this would be good for Angie's weekly links thread, even though it's an old blog post.

Although this lady is very petite, I think she provides some very practical tips that could work for anyone who appears younger than their age and wants to appear older. Her translation tables really help make it clear for the fashion impaired (aka, me).

Wow Sylvie, that is an awesome link! What an amazing difference! Maybe I should give hair and makeup a try!

That's an excellent link, Sylvie :)

Natalie, in short, wanting to look older when you appear to look *too young* is about:

    - wearing grown up clothes (hoodies, sneakers, flip flops and tees is an American teenage look no matter how you slice and dice it).

    - adding a sophisticated edge to your style

    - wearing enough make-up so that you look polished

    I hope that makes sense.

Thanks Angie and GP! I battle this too... I need to look old enough to get respect but young enough to get respect... Working in entertainment is a very weird fine line.

I bet, Dana. Not unlike the fashion industry - only dressing up makes things easier.
