K/R Banana Republic black leather moto

Sorry for the photo dump! I wanted to see if I could get your opinion on this Banana Republic leather moto. I already have two black leather jackets, the Spiegel lemming one with wide lapels that I got for around $25 and wear a lot (9, 13, 18/19, 24) and a streamlined Tahari one that's even older but don't reach for much because it's rather plain (8, 14, 20/21, 25). I've really been wanting a leather moto for a while to add a bit of toughness to my edgy ladylike outfits.

I first tried a Kate Spade one (see finds below) and got it 25% off, but considering it was $900 before the discount it was still pretty expensive. I felt like it was a little too tough looking (ironic that a Kate Spade moto could be too masculine!) and it felt a little thick/stiff and the epaulets stood up quite a bit off my shoulders. It felt a little too costumey on me (in my head this voice kept singing "You know I'm bad, I'm bad, you know it") so I returned it. Now I kinda wish I had kept it for comparison, because it's cropped so maybe it might work better with dresses, and maybe my eyes just needed to adjust, but I had a limited return window so I returned it a couple of months ago and it's sold out now.

Then I found this leather moto at Banana Republic online and I thought I would try it out once it got to the stores, but it sold out right away. I finally found one in stock in Emeryville so I had to drive out there on Mother's Day to get it. I ended up being able to use a 10% off coupon and $50 off $100 in store, so I think it ended up being about $350 down from $450. It's totally sold out now. I've been trying it on with various outfits, but was a little worried because I had posted it with my Catfight Champ thread and someone said it looked too big on me and that I should get a cropped jacket instead. This is a S. I did try the XS when I bought it, but it was too tight in the shoulders and arms and not as comfortable as the S. The leather is very soft and it feels like it fits like a glove. But looking at the pics, I'm not sure if it looks too big on me when unzipped? I am showing some pics of it zipped up, but I hardly ever wear jackets zipped up and honestly I think the zipped up pics make my apple belly look bigger. I took a bunch of pics with different outfits to compare this one with the two others I already owned to see if I could justify adding yet another black leather jacket to my wardrobe. I think I would still keep the other two and use the Spiegel one when I want to emphasize the triangle points (9) and the Tahari to use as a leather blazer for work (8). But I could see the leather moto being my new favorite with most outfits.

For some reason I got a little nervous and ordered a Trouve leather moto (26-28) from Nordstrom to compare, also in a S, but that feels too tight everywhere especially in the arms and stomach, so I probably would need to size up to a M. I went to Nordstrom to try a M. They didn't have the collared moto, but had a collarless Trouve version (29-30). But again the arms were snug (it felt like the thin sweater I was wearing was bunching up in the arms). And I really liked the Banana Republic one more because it had more of the "moto" styling I was looking for.

So, what do you think? Am I overthinking this? Is the Banana Republic leather moto a keeper in terms of fit on my body and in my wardrobe, or should I go for one of the Trouve, or keep looking? Tag is still on, but I'm inclined to snip and keep unless you all think it looks bad on me. Thanks so much for your advice! Oh and 1-5 is my edgy casual luxe look with distressed jeans, Chanel boy and wedge sneakers. I heart YLF (5)!

You are not over thinking it. But sometimes we need a fresh eye and viewpoints.

Spiegel lemming one with wide lapels Is the one I love the most. It just looks so cool on you.

Trouve leather moto I really don't like how this fits in the stomach area. I really like it unzipped. But you don't just buy a jacket with a zipper to wear it unzipped.

Just my opinion but I don't like the others on you. I like them open or they look to heavy or just not your season. You a beautiful woman and these don't do anything to enhance your look.

22 I like open I don't know which that one is but it has a certain toughness about it. I had to re read again the Banana Republic jacket is fine if your going to wear it open. It does not look to big for me.

Your pics are a little dark with the black, but from what I see the BR jacket looks really nice! Disclaimer that I bought a black BR leather jacket that I love (see my Finds), and I'm an apple, and I'm not thinking mine fits perfectly in the shoulders, and yet I love it anyway so I think you're good. The store photo shows a beautiful jacket.

Fwiw, I really like the KS jacket too. But perhaps that look IS hard to pull off for many of us. :) Like costume-y. But very cool.

I remember the time I tried a black moto. (Excuse me while I spit my own coffee out, laughing at the memory. Talk about feeling and in my case looking like I was in a costume!!)

Yet I loved the cut/ style and right away knew it would be super wearable. The only way I could make a moto work for my style was to go blush, and then blue.

But my hair's light, so it is different. I think in theory it should work on you.

I still think the style of the Spiegel one is fabulous on you. Just amazing. But the moto style (BR) also looks good. I have a personal peeve with those belts at the bottom; they always bug me. But if you are not bothered by that, then it could be a good pic for wearing with pants. It does look too long or too heavy to me for wearing with dresses.

It's so hard to get a black leather jacket. I got one at NAS last year but had the sleeves altered. I tried many different ones before though.
The black one with the belt fits you nicely from what I can see on my phone but I have a thing against hanging belts at the hip, maybe I just have that bias... The Spiegel jacket is nice on you.
I love the white one from your other post much better, also for beautiful SanFran but I know you are looking for something edgy. Sorry that I am not really helping with this.

hmmmm….spiegel for the win…..i do like the BR one, i just don't love it….but if you love it, then i'd say its a keeper.

I personally quite like the BR leather jacket on you, especially if you are going to wear it open.  But you have to really love it to keep it for a pricey item.

  • Janet replied 7 years ago

I'm on my phone so having a tough time keeping track of which pic is which jacket, but I like the very first one the best. I'm not too fond of the Spiegel one anymore or the Tahari, but that might just be my personal preference talking. I'm not blown away by the fit of the Trouve either, and if the arms feel tight, that is a deal breaker for me.

I like the one in the first few pics best...how does it look closed? Is that it in 23? I'd keep the Trouve. I'm not totally feeling it right now, because it's more polished, but I'm sure it's still a good piece for your wardrobe.

I like the BR best of all here too. I'm high fiving Tanya and Janet. Can you also remove the belt on the band?

  • UmmLila (Lisa) replied 7 years ago

I have tried many leather jackets and anything that isn't drapy enough just doesn't flatter me and feels too much like my husband's ancient Carnaby Street moto. I finally found one that I really like on sale at the end of last year. (See finds). I like the shape of your BR one but I say only keep it if it's not stiff at all.

Also, if it's between the white in the other post and the black in this one, I'd take the white.

  • goldenpig replied 7 years ago

BR one is super comfy so I think I'm probably going to stick with that one over the Trouves. Belt is not removable but I don't think it's a deal breaker. I actually think the black one would be more versatile for my wardrobe than the white leather one.

  • Aziraphale replied 7 years ago

I generally prefer a black moto over a white, fwiw. I think the black would get more wear. I'm having a bit of a hard time seeing how it looks because the pictures are quite dark, but I like the BR one too.

I'm afraid I can't follow what jacket is in each photo, but I like the jacket best that's in photos #1-4.

  • El Cee replied 7 years ago

I very much like the BR jacket on you. It seems to be a better overall fit and style for you than either of the Trouve options. (The arm fit issues alone would rule these out for me.)
