K/R: NAS loot

Hi all! Piling on to the NAS fray with my set of K/R's. I bought these when the pre-sale started but didn't get a chance to take pics till now. I also haven't had a chance to peruse Angie's lists yet but am hoping to read them later tonight!

I have to say I'm not super thrilled with these now that I've tried them on. The only one I love and am keeping for sure is the Zella turquoise jacket and black yoga pants. On the fence about the black and white striped dress (I think it looks better than the red/navy) and the red leggings, but I'm not so sure about the grey sweater and the two capes--I feel like they're kind of swallowing me up. What do you think of these items on me--anything worth keeping?

1-5. Halogen Toggle Closure Topper in Grey (one size fits all):
http://shop.nordstrom.com/S/ha.....sultback=0
and Hue red denim leggings:
http://shop.nordstrom.com/s/hu.....sultback=0
I am not sure about the sweater. These M red leggings are a bit snug at the waist, but the size L was too big in the crotch.
Oh and I couldn't resist copying the silly model pose (4-5)! :)

6-10. French Connection 'Dani' Stripe Side Panel Sheath Dress in black/white (6-8) and red/navy (9-10) in size 8:
http://shop.nordstrom.com/s/fr.....sultback=0
This is a very snug body-con dress so I had to size up to an 8. Even so, I think it's a bit of a hard style for apples to wear. Sorry for the bad lighting--I think it looks worse in the pics because the overhead lighting in the bathroom closet here creates a lot of shadows around the tummy that you wouldn't necessarily see in real life. Regardless, what do you think? I think for some reason the black/white looks more slimming than the red/navy. Plus I think I can also wear it with the red leggings in 8--does that look OK? On the other hand, if you think this dress makes me look horribly fat, let me know. I can handle it! ;)

11-13. Betsey Johnson Bell Sleeve Capelet in Orange, size S:
http://shop.nordstrom.com/s/be.....sultback=0
Maybe I should have sized down to an XS--I kind of feel like a whale in this. Also the buttons/toggles are kind of difficult to open and close easily. The closure is a bit fussy. Not sure if I really need this because I already have a rust orange wool peacoat. If you really like it, I might try an XS.

14-15. Via Spiga Ombre Plaid cape size S/M:
http://shop.nordstrom.com/s/vi.....ltback=432
Huh, I'm not sure about this one either. It also feels a little large on me, and there are a lot of snaps to close it up which is also kind of fussy. And the "sleeves" are not real sleeves...I feel like a bat when I raise my arms!

17-20. Zella ruched turquoise jacket size S:
(Here's the link for the black version but I can't find the turquoise--maybe it's sold out?)
http://shop.nordstrom.com/s/ze.....sultback=0
Zella Booty Reversible Pants size 8:
http://shop.nordstrom.com/s/ze.....sultback=0
These are my faves of the bunch and the only ones I'm keeping for sure. So comfy--gear that still looks stylish enough to wear out & about in a pinch. Definitely fills a loungewear wardrobe hole for me! The pants say "reversible" but the inside is black too, so I'm not sure what the point of that is.

Thanks for wading through yet another YLF NAS K/R!

The hoodie and pants are great. I am halfway liking the orange coat. I think the other capes are too long for you, and the dresses don't look that flattering IMO.

  • MNsara replied 11 years ago

I can see why the Zella is a definite keeper! It is strikingly pretty on you :-)

Now, the VOR (or mother) in me says that you should NOT be buying more of those outerwear things that are like last year's capes . . . I think you got two (or three?) capes last year and maybe you could check into restyling one or more of them instead. . . ?!

Of the other items, I like the black & white striped dress the best - pretty flattering! But only if you think it's filling a MOTG or work need!

  • goldenpig replied 11 years ago

Thanks Laura, I might give the XS a try in the orange if everyone likes it too.

Thanks Mom (I mean MNSara) ;)
I do have a purple sweater cape and orange sweater poncho from last year that I'm still planning to wear this fall (I actually wore the purple one just this week). Last year I bought a camel cape but then returned it because the color wasn't that flattering on me. So I don't actually have a cape coat, but I do know what you mean about not buying too many "specialty" silhouette items.

And the dress, I get your point...not totally sure yet whether this would be a MOTG dress (with leggings) or work dress with a blazer or a date night dress. Might be too body con for MOTG and work?

Love the Zella stuff. That is one cute hoodie! I vote keep. The red leggings look okay, although it's difficult to see them. Do you know what you'd wear them with?

I vote return the rest. The capes are overwhelming on your petite frame (and it sounds like you have some already from last year), the FC dresses don't do you justice. I find FC dresses like this to be so body con that you have to be a toothpick in order for them to work. I kind of hate FC. :)

  • Kari replied 11 years ago

The ombre cape and the Zella turquoise jacket are my FAVORITE of the bunch!

I'm not really sold on the rest - to my eye, the other items don't measure up to the very, very high standards you've set by your existing wardrobe.

  • Abie replied 11 years ago

Defiantly keep the Zella! I like the orange poncho and it might be worth trying in a smaller size if its available. The one you have does look big. The red leggings have lots of potential, maybe try them on with some of your existing items.

I don't love the dresses, and the other capes look overwhelming to me, especially the first one.

  • Echo replied 11 years ago

I agree that the capes and trapeze jacket swallow you whole. I am not fond of the first, fourth or fifth items, although you might be able to get away with the orange, simply due to the cute factor. I don't mind the black and white striped dress, and it is more flattering than the red/navy, although I think you can do better. There are styles which flatter you much more. I do really like the last turquise jacket, though.

  • rae replied 11 years ago

I like the jacket and the two dresses (and I love your pose mimicking the model). The rest doesn't grab me, sorry to say. I just got back from Nordstrom, and not much grabbed me overall, though.

  • cciele replied 11 years ago

I think you have good instincts -- the Zella jacket is great! The rest, not so much... Maybe the orange cape in a smaller size though?

  • sarah replied 11 years ago

I'm not wild about the non-gear, but the gear looks great. I bought the Zella reversible "bike shorts" and wore them to pilates last night (the inside of mine is charcoal). I think they're great, and that hoodie is fab on you!

  • KathyL replied 11 years ago

The turquoise jacket is great on you. Love the color and the fit. The capes all look big on you, but take that with a grain of salt as I am not a cape fan myself. As for the dress, I like the black and white but if you feel too body-con in it, I would pass.

  • Diana replied 11 years ago

Agree that the gear is great! I also rather like the Via Spiga bat cape - it has a very elegant, long, sleek look that I like, and I think the bat sleeves actually help keep it streamlined because they are separate from the body, if that makes sense. But if you feel like a bat, then you feel like a bat and I could see that it might be fussy to deal with when out and about.

Not feeling any of the rest of it, I'm afraid.

  • Deborah replied 11 years ago

No question the gear looks great. Other than that I really like the ombré plaid cape. Looks super stylish and crests a long slim line. The other items are jaut not doing it for me.

  • replied 11 years ago

Oh, I love that Zella jacket! Beautiful color and fit on you!

  • replied 11 years ago

I like the turquoise jacket. I vote keep.
I vote return on the striped dress. I think sweater dresses are very hard to pull off, plus I have a bias against black and white stripes on knit fabrics that go past the waist. I immediately think bumble bee.
As far as the capes and the cascading grey sweater, I think you need to go down in size, before completely dismissing them . They are all too big.
The yoga pants are nice. I would wear them with longer tops, unless I'm going to the gym. I treat them as leggins.
You did better than me. all of my NAS purchases have been returns, thus far.

  • replied 11 years ago

Love the gear! Keep. I vote no for everything else. I'm surprised that orange capelet looks so long on you. A true 3/4 sleeve and a good steaming would make it look better I'm sure, and it's the best of the coats by far, but I think it's too similar to your other orange poncho to warrant keeping.

  • ManidipaM replied 11 years ago

Natalie, I'm sorry to say the striped dresses do not do you justice. The ones you already have (such as the Jason Wu, even after all the doubts; I'm not even talking about Tahari or Kate Spade) are way, way, way more flattering.

Like Kari and Diana, I quite like the plaid cape on you. It doesn't look overwhelming (unlike the other two, especially the orange) but is rather more streamlined and the structure of the contrast trim really helps it to NOT look like a shapeless sack or drape, which ponchos and capes can tend to do unless they fit just-so.

The Zellas are doubtless winners, though.

  • Janet replied 11 years ago

The Zella pieces are keepers! I like the ombré cape but it seems a bit long. Maybe if you're wearing heels...

Sorry to say I don't think the other pieces are up to your fab standards.

  • Amy replied 11 years ago

The best of the bunch is the Zella jacket and the pants. The other capes and jackets overwhelm you, IMO.

I'm not crazy about the dresses. They don't look bad on you, but they just don't "float my boat."

  • krishnidoux replied 11 years ago

    1) Grey cape: unfortunately swallows you up.
    2) French Connection dress: the red and black looks better on you imo. It compliments your hair and skin tone. However I applaud your styling in pick 8: pairing black and white stripes with red! A great idea. Still, red & black would be my choice.
    3) Orange capelet: again, too large! It's also too wide.
    4) Grey cape: too boring for you!
    5) Zella outfit: yes! Keep. Flattering and very useful too.

Sorry about all the nays... just trying to be honest ;)

  • Angie replied 11 years ago

The active wear is sublime! Keep!

Try a petite in the orange cape. That will work better.

I vote return the rest - and if you like, have a peek at my lists.

  • goldenpig replied 11 years ago

So we all agree that the Zella gear is a keeper! I wore the jacket this weekend and DH complimented me on the jacket too! Looks like I'm going to give Yoga Mom a run for her money!

I'm returning everything else. You guys are right. Nothing else felt quite right on me and I'm being extra picky nowadays.

Anyhow, onwards and upwards! I'm going to browse Angie's NAS list and see if anything else might work better. Also I got an Anthro discount card in the mail so I was having fun browsing online there! Anything worth trying there?

Great fit on the active wear. I can't wait to see what new items you pick up when you are in the store doing returns. I always end up walking out with items when I go in the store to return.

  • goldenpig replied 11 years ago

Thanks for the input everyone! I ended up returning everything except the Zella jacket and pants. And Lisa, I was very good...I didn't even shop for anything else! (I know what you mean about ending up with more stuff when you return things though...)

  • Lisa replied 11 years ago

Goldenpig , great job only keeping items that are 10s. Sometimes it's hard to give up pieces because it was "on sale." Those Zella items are really stellar on you!
