K/R pics: Fossil (yellow and black) and Ralph Lauren doctor's satchels

I posted about these "doctor satchel" shape bags earlier--thanks all for your advice.

Now the Fossil bags have arrived and I thought I would post IRL K/R comparison pics, if you can bear with me (lot of pics!). Does this change your opinion on which bag to keep? I could keep the yellow plus one of the black ones (I don't have either color bag), or only one of the three, or none if you don't like any of them!

The advantages of the Fossil ones are that they have a crossbody strap (although I don't know if they look too large to wear as a crossbody) and the leather is softer, and it has two (open) side pockets instead of just one (closed) in the front. On the other hand, the Ralph Lauren is more structured/dressier, cleaner look, nicer lining, has feet on the bottom, and is a little cheaper (since I got it on sale at TJ Maxx). I admit I do like the look of the Fossil better (plus I'm a Fossil fan), but the Fossil vibe is definitely more casual. I think that works in the favor of the yellow bag though--I feel like I could wear it both to work (19-21) and casual MOTG (22-23). Plus Suz's ode to a yellow bag has got me craving yellow:

Very beautiful bags. I love that yellow.

  • jayne replied 11 years ago

Fossil, it just seems more you and it can be dressed up and down. The RL lacks a cross body strap? and it more masculine. I think of you as feminine!

  • replied 11 years ago

To me, it is between the yellow and black Fossil. They are both neutrals of sorts. You neeed a black bag, but gosh, I love that yellow.
Ok, I vote keep both Fossil bags. The RL just does not jive with your style persona, I think.

  • Astrid replied 11 years ago

I agree, definitely one or even both Fossil bags for you! They seem to be more you and I think they would be more versatile. If you really need a black bag keep both Fossil ones, else I vote keep the yellow. I love that yellow bag! I think it's a great color and would go very well with so many of your things.

I love the look of the RLL bag on you - the colour, shape and scale. I also love the yellow Fossil. But bags are very personal, and it seems you don't click with the RLL, so on that basis I'd advise against it.

  • lyn67 replied 11 years ago

Yellow is the keeper, for sure!:-)

  • cheryle (Dianthus) replied 11 years ago

I like them all and here are a few observations.

It looks like the Lauren would have to be open side to side to get into it but it does have separate compartments inside. That is a minus and a plus for me personally.

I like the clean lines of the Lauren but prefer the rings to attach the strap on the Fossil better than the Lauren.

I like the yellow quite a bit but black is very basic and works with color very well.

If you only keep one, I think I would go with Fossil. If you plan to keep two, I would suggest the yellow fossil and Lauren for more variety.

They are both really attractive bags.

  • Kirti replied 11 years ago

I vote for the yellow Fossil :-)

  • Kristin L replied 11 years ago

I can see how the RL bag has a more professional look, but the question is how happy are you with it? I prefer the black fossil to the RL, but I prefer more casual bags. Which one do you think you'll carry more?

The yellow is adorable! I like the outfit you paired it with.

  • Angie replied 11 years ago

I like the black RL best *if* you are after a black bag.

  • marianna replied 11 years ago

I like how the RL one is more structured. That one gets my vote.

  • Transcona Shannon replied 11 years ago

I'm sticking with my original choice even more so now that I see them side by side - I really like the RL bag. It's got a classic, simple, structured feel to it that will never go out of style. And I like the lack of "bling" on it.

  • kmb1 replied 11 years ago

Personally, I like the sleeker look of the black RL bag over the black Fossil bag. I also like the Fossil bag in yellow more than the Fossil bag in black. The lack of crossbody strap would actually be a plus for me because I do not like to wear crossbody bags. It could be my anti-crossbody bias, but I do think they are too big to wear that way because you have such a cute figure and these bags add a lot of bulk around the hips!

If it were me, I would keep the black RL and yellow Fossil if I had the budget/closet space/need for both colors, BUT from your post it sounds like the two Fossil bags are more "you" so I think you should keep one or both of them. Enjoy!

Annnnnd now I want a yellow bag. Just when I thought I had decided what my next purse purchase would be that Ode to Yellow post has to come along and shake it all up! :)

I'm going to h.e. double sticks...
I just caved, I bought your Fossil satchel in kelly green. I plan to take the key / hardware off.

  • rae replied 11 years ago

I much prefer the Fossils for you. No crossbody strap is a dealbreaker for me, and I don't have kiddos... you'll love having the option, I think. I do love the yellow but somehow think the black will get more play in the wardrobe. You have lots of color in there already and need the "pop" less than someone like me (with two yellow bags in the closet).

  • modgrl replied 11 years ago

Bags are such a personal choice! You have to make sure that they will carry everything you need to have with you and be functional for your lifestyle. For me, I don't really love all the blingage on the Fossil bags. There is so much going on between the buckles, the fobbles and the xbody strap. I like the look of the RL bag, but I'm just not that excited about a black bag for you for summer. I would love to see you with something brighter.

  • Amy replied 11 years ago

I like the black Ralph Lauren and the yellow Fossil.

  • lyn* replied 11 years ago

As much as I am a Fossil whore, I think the RL bag is more "doctor bag" ish :)

  • goldenpig replied 11 years ago

High five Zap! That green one looks beautiful!

Thanks for your advice everyone! I think of the three, I like the yellow one best because I'm a color girl and sunny yellow makes me happy! So I think I'll be keeping that one. But I do think it is good to have a basic neutral black bag as well, because sometimes I don't want EVERYTHING in my outfit to be crazy colored and patterned.

I think right now I may actually be leaning toward the RL if I do keep one of the black bags, just because it looks more work appropriate and dressier and looks more like a real doctor's bag. But it's still a tossup! I may have to carry them around a bit to see which one is more comfortable. I think the RL may fit on my shoulder, in which case the lack of crossbody strap is less of an issue. Most of my purses are actually shoulder satchels--the Dotty bag was actually my first crossbody, so I'm more used to carrying purses on my shoulder. I do worry that the bag is too big looking as a crossbody, like you said kmb1. Also like Dianthus says, the yellow Fossil and black RL will be more variety. Hmm...will have to go play with these bags and report back!

  • replied 11 years ago

Ummm.. the color on that stock photo looks a tad different that what my cell phone showed me this morning, a more muted green... I guess we'll see.

  • Sarah A replied 11 years ago

so... i am late ringing in but i think the yellow fossil is fun and casual and the RL would fit a dressier bill. OT: I am going to try using the tarrago dye that claire and rae have written about on an old coach bag, in case you thought you might want to revive yours for those times when you might want a smaller bag.

  • replied 11 years ago

Late, but I had already decided that you *need* the yellow bag for summer, and for you sunny disposition. If you keep a black one, the RL is a nice change of pace for it's sleek, structured ladylike design. Black bags are a dime a dozen and can look boring really fast. If you need to have one, make it really special and modern looking, like the structured RL. Bossy this morning, aren't I? :)

  • qfbrenda replied 11 years ago

I would try the RL bag with a coat, since I tend to wear a black bag in the winter more than the summer. If you are sure you would be comfy carrying it, then I would keep the black RL and the yellow Fossil for variety.

  • catgirl replied 11 years ago

I'm not a bag lady - I have stuck with my black Coach bag for a year now - but of these I prefer the Fossils by far. There's nothing wrong with the RL one, it just looks a little too conservative for your many personas.

  • Jewell replied 11 years ago

I still prefer the RL bag over the Fossils, though I'll admit the IRL pics of the Fossil bags are quite nice. My biggest concern is that you sound afraid to follow your heart on this one. Any bag lady will tell you that bags are very personal purchases, and they just have to "feel right." It's clear to me that you prefer the Fossil bags so nevermind what we say, because we don't have to carry those bags around- you do! You may as well be carrying something that makes you smile every time you reach for it : )

  • Fruitful replied 11 years ago

Jewell is a wise woman! What she said!

  • ManidipaM replied 11 years ago

First: Love the skirt and top you're wearing. Great colours on you, and while not your usual waist-defining look, I like this more casual but still very pulled together vibe you've got here.

Second: Still ADORE the RL. It's definitely more the 'doctor bag', like Lyn said. I have to say I wouldn't have seen the Fossil as anything more than a 'satchel' if I met it on the street and someone weren't talking about doctor bags! Also, I think it actually works beautifully for your work outfits and ladylike leanings. AS long as it's comfy to carry. And it will always look striking, like your fabulous moto jacket, and make a statement even though it's also a straightforward classic; the Fossil is... more laidback, as in well-loved cowboy boots, and still classic but more an easy versatile piece than a statement.

Third: GET THAT YELLOW! If you really love the Fossil, pick yellow. It's much more fun, still very versatile (as Suz has sung), will also stay a classic, and will add a little more punch to your outfits than black. BUT it may not be suitable for some of your work looks.

    Third:

  • Suz replied 11 years ago

well, I don't know how I missed this thread, but obviously I vote for YELLOW!!

If you want a black one in this shape my personal preference is the RL one because i don't like bling on bags. But that's just me. As others have said, you've got to go with your heart.

  • goldenpig replied 11 years ago

Thanks everyone! I've played around with the bags some more and I've decided to keep the yellow Fossil bag--I really like the color and think it will work really well in my wardrobe. I plan to take the crossbody strap off for work for a cleaner look but use it as a crossbody for MOTG. The leather is so soft and comfy.

Now for the black bags--surprise, I've decided to keep the RL! It's dressier and more structured and cleaner looking, and I think it looks more like a doctor's bag, which is the vibe I was after. The Fossil is softer and comfier to wear but looks more casual with the stitching and hardware. The RL isn't as comfy on my shoulder because the handles are shorter and bag is stiffer, but I would mainly be using this for work so I'd be able to carry it by the handles or on the crook of my arm. The interior on the RL looks nicer too. No, it isn't a Fossil (haha Lyn, I am a Fossil whore too), but sometimes a little variety is OK!

Thanks for your help. Your feedback is invaluable, as always!
