NAS White swan/black swan: impractical tulle skirt x2 (K/R?)

Speaking of impractical items...I haven't actually worn this outfit out yet, and am trying to decide whether to keep it. Tags are still on so let me know if I can pull this off, or whether it's getting into Bjork swan dress territory (8)...can I really wear a tulle skirt, or do I look ridiculous? The kids are begging me to keep it because they want to play with it. Sweater is also from NAS and also a K/R. I recently watched Black Swan on an airplane ride (love Natalie Portman) and was inspired to change up the jewelry and handbag and footwear to transform from pretty white swan to edgy black swan (7) and to put my hair up in a messy ballerina bun. The statement necklaces are both from Stella and Dot...the white one has tulle and leather "feathers" and the black one is harder edged. The gold bracelet is more delicate and the silver bracelets are spikier. Excuse the shadows...the overhead lighting really accentuates the lumps and bumps and I've gotten a lot lumpier and bumpier lately. And this pale grey and white and blush look is kind of a departure for me...does this palette work with my coloring? Thanks for your comments!

Theory Jodi grey sweater (NAS)
Bailey 44 ivory tulle skirt (NAS)
Ugg Izabel Mar nude lace up pointy ballet flats (I thought it would be a fitting match for the ballerina skirt)
Kate Spade perforated floral purse
Stella and Dot "Birdie" necklace
Stella and Dot "Gracie" bracelet

Skechers grey studded wedge sneakers
Michael Kors silver studded satchel
Stella and Dot Palladian necklace
Stella and Dot rebel bracelet
F21 bracelet
Karl Lagerfeld watch

Beautiful! The cross cross ankle strap flats work with the skirt amazingly well. Also, your hair looks really good put up in the back!

I have a secret love for tulle skirts so it is hard for me to be objective.  If anyone could pull this off, YOU COULD.  I really think it suits your style. If you have places to wear this skirt, I would keep it.  If it would become a closet orphan because it lacked the proper venue then return it.  Let us know what you decide.

  • UmmLila (Lisa) replied 8 years ago

I think it works because the subtle color palette doesn't take the tulle too far over the top.

  • AndiB replied 8 years ago

    I kinda love it!

  • kkards replied 8 years ago

WOW.....i've been in love with the skirt since angie had it in a weekly round up early in spring, but i couldn't figure out how i'd make it work IRL, but this is perfect!

  • Joy replied 8 years ago

You have made the skirt look amazing. Your little girl needs one too so you can have a mother-daughter outfit :)

  • Suz replied 8 years ago

Ahhh...Natalie, the skirt is lovely on you! It's great with those flats -- what an inspired pairing. So so pretty. If it doesn't break the bank and makes you happy, I say KEEP

Can you size up one size in the sweater? I am thinking it might drape a bit better. I do love the pairing with the skirt (even though in my world, it is seasonally confused, LOL -- but SF weather is a lot different from mine, I know.)

  • Peri replied 8 years ago

I love it too! Both looks are great, so if you have places and occasions to wear something like this it is definitely a keep.

  • Word Lily replied 8 years ago

The skirt is so fun! I think the color of the sweater works well, too.

  • Angie replied 8 years ago

I LOVE IT. Especially with the sneaks.

Waving at my sweater twin. Good to see you again, Natalie.

  • Elly replied 8 years ago

I like the skirt-- not sure if I love the sweater over it-- I think the tulle adds to midsection bumps-- which is fine when you can tell for sure it is tulle.

  • ma replied 8 years ago

I really love the skirt!! And I love how you've styled it. I like the fitted sweater, too! I say keep!!

  • deb replied 8 years ago

Natalie, this skirt is perfect for you. I vote keep.

  • Vivian replied 8 years ago

So fun, looks great.......go for it.

  • replied 8 years ago

All flowy and ready to catch eyes and turning heads.  The ankle strap flats are lovely and dreamy with this outfit and the sneakers could be so fun for certain occasions. Not sure the necklace is "the one" for this sweater and skirt. You might try the next size up in that sweater and see if you like the line better.  But you don't want too roomy, just a tad more give in the chest area, I'm seeing.  Maybe a necklace that comes down a bit more than the choker necklace you are currently pairing with it.  These are just candid feels for this combination.  I've seen these kinds of little skirts for children in TJMax actually.  That could be fun . . .

  • Cerinda replied 8 years ago

A vote for your Black Swan.  Would you consider pushing the look even further?

  • Elle replied 8 years ago

Love love love the skirt and the color palate on you. I like the sweater too but think the skirt needs a softer top - possibly a flowy crop top or one with a welt ( if you have such a thing).  Both shoe combinations work well.  You have a great sense of style.

  • SandyG replied 8 years ago

Very nice combo, my only insight is a slouchier top minus the necklace would really allow the skirt to be the star. Want!

  • Jenn replied 8 years ago

I love it with the Skechers, and agree with those who have suggested an even slouchier sweater. This skirt cries out for the oversized/chunky top. Really adore your style.

  • donnat replied 8 years ago

I love it! You can totally rock that skirt!

  • MsMary replied 8 years ago

    Super love both versions! Keep!

  • unfrumped replied 8 years ago

I'd keep the skirt and make occasions to wear it.
Love it with both shoes.  The ballet shoes are fab for a more dressy occasion. With the sneakers I'd especially wear a boxier top, can be luxurious fabrication or more juxtaposed such as upscale sweatshirt-type. Even something graphic. Also some kind of bootie in place of sneaks, for more options for casual. I was enthralled with an ensemble last fall of organza skirt and mohair (but too scratchy) sweater and chunky footwear. Wish I had someplace to go in something like that!
I think this could be something you don't necessarily wear lots of times each year but a few times a year for several years to come, and when you do, it's fabulous.

  • Ornella replied 8 years ago

Natalie, this might easily be my favourite outfit you ever posted. I love everything about it, gentle colours, solids, ankle strap and hair (great do!) and vote keep and wear A LOT. Divine!

  • shedev replied 8 years ago

cute, I'd size up the top.

  • replied 8 years ago

Pretty with edge: you can totally pull this off. Super styling in both looks. I love the slightly ballerina look of the ankle strap flats. I think the colour palette is great on you. Sometimes kids know best ;)

  • Vildy replied 8 years ago

wow, I didn't know what to expect after your intro - I remember Bjork's dead swan.  But you look great in this!  It's so romantic. And it does look like a dancer off duty.

  • Jaime replied 8 years ago

Ha your comparison pictures made me laugh! You look perfectly lovely in the skirt and neither black swan nor Bjork!

  • Firecracker (Sharan) replied 8 years ago

I like the skirt on you a lot, and I like it with the sweater and both versions. The color palette totally works for you. I vote keep on both items!
Just another idea--for cooler weather perhaps--add a black moto jacket over outfit 2? And black booties to anchor the look?

  • Maneera replied 8 years ago

Keep and wear ALOT! I can't decide which I like better - the White Swan or the Black Swan! Both are super pretty!

  • Colette replied 8 years ago

Very fun! I vote keep the skirt. I love the soft colors. Make sure you twirl at least once.

  • Beth Ann replied 8 years ago

Looks great, Natalie!  I think I might remove the necklace in #2 --- just let the arm party shine.  You could easily find an evening topper for this skirt and turn it into a formal wear look.  It would also pair nicely with a leather jacket.

  • LucyRose replied 8 years ago

This is so cool. I love the first look with the pointy shoes.

  • jackiec replied 8 years ago

Keep keep keep! Gorgeous and perfect for you. I hope you wear it a lot! Sooo versatile :)!

  • Laurinda replied 8 years ago

A no-sew Tulle skirt for the kids (so you won't have to share ;-) )
    No-Sew Super Full Tulle Skirt {DiY}

  • Style Fan replied 8 years ago

OMG I love this skirt.  How fab on you.  I like how you have styled it and I think it would also look great with a slouchy sweater.

    I loved the Black Swan.

  • goldenpig replied 8 years ago

Thanks everyone! I think I will see if I can exchange the grey sweater for a size up. I initially was going to get the M, but the SA said she thought the S was a better fit. I find that the SAs often recommend a closer fit as opposed to the relaxed slouchy style popular here on YLF. I feel like that happens to me a lot when I ask for advice when trying things on in store.

Also looking forward to trying the tulle skirt with some slouchier sweaters or moto jackets. This could be fun...adult dress-up!

  • replied 8 years ago

It sounds like you are keeping the white skirt.  I'm really glad because I love it on you.  It makes me wonder if it would work for me as well.

  • CocoLion replied 8 years ago

Love the skirt on you and I can see the inspiration theme at work.  Hope you and family are doing well.

  • Sara L. replied 8 years ago

Ooh, I love that skirt!  I totally want one now but I have no place to wear one and I'm determined not to buy for a fantasy lifestyle (a bad habit I'm trying to break).  I think the sneakers outfit needs a more casual top and accessories but that's my only critism.  These are great looks.

  • AviaMariah replied 8 years ago

I'm envisioning a black motto jacket and tough boots! I love your renditions too. How about a jean jackets with the sneaks?

  • catgirl replied 8 years ago

Late to the party - I have a black tulle skirt like this and wear it with camo for a UWP contrast, when I can find an occasion!  So I say keep!

  • Shelly replied 8 years ago

    Hi
I just adore the skirt with the ballet flats. The skirt is just so pretty but like someone said above, I am not sure I like the heaviness of the sweater. The sweater is lovely but it kind of looks a little bulky through your mid-section.

I don't know if you have any longer necklaces but a nice silver pendant might work?

Anyway I would definitely keep the skirt!

  • Marley replied 8 years ago

The all-time most favorite outfit I've seen you post Natalie!  You look so pretty in the first rendition and edgy and dangerous (haha!) in the second!  Love them both!!!!

  • Suzanne (ambergreen) replied 8 years ago

I wasn't sure what I would see when clicking on this, but what a pleasant result--you do pull this off. (It's so funny when mentally trying things on that work on others--boy, would this so not work on me! Go you!) And I agree with Laurinda--keep this lovely piece for yourself. :)
