Team-Picking Challenge!

I was inspired by Fruitful's thread about how she had a lightbulb moment and realized that Angie's posts on picking teams was more than just a fun poll but a way to define and refine your style. And by Laurinda saying she would use the Team X Team Y posts as a quiz for her girlfriends.
http://youlookfab.com/welookfa.....ulb-moment

So, I had another lightbulb moment and thought, why not combine those ideas and make it into a YLF challenge? I think this will really help each of us figure out our own style! Plus, it will be a fascinating read to see each member's replies. I bet we'll even be able to figure out who are style twins by people's responses to these questions.

So, without further ado, here are 50 Team X Team Y questions for you to answer. I selected some from Angie's list of Team X Team Y posts, and added a bunch of my own as well. And, as Angie says--over to you, and no batting for both teams! (If you can't decide, you can sit on the bench).

PS, if you want to post one or a few representative looks of your style, I think that would be great! It will really help us visualize how you put these questions all together!

Wow, GP! What a great idea, and thanks for compiling this. I am going to sit down and really answer all of these questions -- I think I was on the fence about a lot of these in months past, but I'm getting a stronger sense of my style now. Terrific exercise!

    10. Singular or Schizophrenic—Schizophrenic! I'm boho, classic, preppy, all in one.

    Shopping, Wardrobe and Wearing Habits

    12. Thrift or Retail-I very, very rarely thrift, too lazy.

  • Suz replied 12 years ago

Great thread, Natalie! I was going to launch something similar today, also following up on Fruitful's post, but with a wrinkle: I was going to ask people to give really quick gut level answers to the questions. I did this for myself last night and was surprised at some of my own responses! Back soon with a proper answer to the challenge.

  • chewyspaghetti replied 12 years ago

I answered mine on my blog:

Thanks fr compiling this goldenpig- it's a fun way to get some clarity!

    Personal Style and Silhouettes
    1. Casual or Dressy— Casual. However if responses should be based on "Do you tend to underdress or overdress?", it would be dressy. My style is typically very casual but I'm not an under-dresser when occasions call for dressy.

    2. Minimal or Maximal—Probably lean toward Maximal
    3. Polished or RATE - RATE
    4. Feminine or Androgynous - This is tough because it begs the question "what is feminine?". Lots of folks in the blog response addressed this. In my mind, I dress femininely.
    5. Sleek or Frilly— Sleek (I do like adornment, but not frilly)
    6. Fitted or Flowy— Fitted
    7. Waist definition or Waist surrender— waist definition
    8. Volume on top or Volume on bottom—Volume on top
    9. Classic or Trendy— Trendy

    12. Thrift or Retail - Retail
    13. Full price or Bargain price— Bargain
    14. Tops or Bottoms—Tops
    15. Impulse or Deliberate shopper—Deliberate. I do make impulse buys but I TRY to have a list and stick to it. I do find I am a "mission" shopper when alone.
    16. Keep or Return—keep
    17. Wear or Save—Wear
    18. Edit or Keep— Keep with a strong desire to join Team Edit

    This was fun, goldenpig!

  • Fruitful replied 12 years ago

Goldenpig, to be honest the day before you posted this, I answered the Team X/Y posts on a stickynote on my computer!

Now that I'm seeing everyone else's, I'm thinking there needs to be a spreadsheet? So we can see if there are any patterns/who else picks the same as us.

After all, we can't all be making lists out of these without making some meta conclusions, can we? (Like the style twinning you mentioned). I would post mine but I'm waiting to see if a spreadsheet appears first :)

Your photos are a great cross section of your style!

If Greg is listening, and I know you probably have ideas like this on the burner anyway, but it would be so great if we had a photo gallery here, even better if we had our own on our profiles. Imagine if it had subcategories, like "current style", "evolution", "inspiration". I'd love to pin all my inspirations here *sigh*. We could also have lists like this. Of course it could currently be done too, as simple notes.

    Rambly post is rambly...

Oh, GP, one question I'd like to ask is if people are Team "close to" or Team "far away". Do you dress for the effect created from a distance, or up close?

Fruitful, I did the same thing. The day before GP posted this, I went and asked myself the Team x/Team y questions from Angie's blog and made myself answer REALLY QUICKLY, gut reaction only. If I had to look up the meaning of the "team" I did so, but other than that, I went with my gut. And scribbled the answers in my notebook. And it was SO instructive. The answers themselves were less instructive than which questions were tough, and why. I saw where I had already changed and made some surprising discoveries about where I want to go. It's really worthwhile to do it that way, I think, just off the cuff. (Especially for those of us who tend to over-analyze and bench-sit whenever we can!!) When I was really tempted to sit on the bench, I asked myself: If you could only ever wear ONE of these again, which would it be?

Really good point Suz! About answers being less important than which questions were hard. I'll have to do this again, and try not to analysis-paralysis myself.
