Una's challenge: RATE Kate Spade

I almost hate to jump in now cause this RATE thing is getting kinda heated. And I admit, I am guilty of confusing RATE with edgy but that's because the RATE queens ARE so edgy and fab! Here's my attempt to RATE up Kate Spade, because Una said it couldn't be done. ;) I'm wearing my Kate Spade ruffle trench with the belt hanging loose. I left my top half untucked, and wore a scarf that has a fringy unfinished edge. And my red zipper boots, just because I still can't get rid of the RATE=moto chic association in my mind. And I messed up my hair a little and did some slouchy poses. What do you think? Any RATE-ness at all? Throw me a bone here...this is tough--I'm so polished I don't even own any visibly ripped/distressed clothes! :)

I am no expert in RATE as I bat for Team Polished but I would say you did a fab job on the challenge.

  • MsMary replied 12 years ago

    ZOMG LOVE!!!

I'd say you definitely achieved RATEness with this look! I think it's the fab scarf that pushed you over the edge.

I swear, Natalie! You are a fashion prodigy!!

Hey, what counts a lot is you look like you're having fun!! I really like all these ingredients, and putting them together works, too. The boots are fab! Now, straighten up your posture and your clothes, young lady (j.k.)! and you'll really fit your own style also!! :-)

I've realized my own sense or definition of RATE was really off - I was thinking it meant faded or distressed, jean-ish, fleece-ish, canvas-y, camp-hike-gear look, like the most casual Eddie Bauer or Columbia brand, etc. I was beginning to define that as the reason I was not drawn to the jeans jacket look, even though I tried several on and like it on other people. But all the discussions on RATE have made it clearer - but I don't know what I would call the look I was thinking of?

Not meaning to hijack the thread, but interesting to think about.

You look fantastic and you made me smile so hard my face hurt with your poses and commentary! Don't care if its RATE or polished (and goodness, such a small thing to cause such a stir) you look fabulous. LOVE IT. you rock goldenpig.

  • MNsara replied 12 years ago

You look great and I'm hesitant to comment on the RATE aspect . . . the discussion is pretty over my head . . . but I feel it's a polished RATE - like when Una had the leather pencil skirt outfit. I guess, I'm not inclined to spend much energy analyzing though. . .

You wear 'it' well, and I wonder how you felt, in that you're so naturally polished?

  • Janet replied 12 years ago

RATE or not, you look great in this! I'm coveting those boots.

  • Mo replied 12 years ago

No matter how we define this, I really like it, too! Maybe this is my epiphany - polished RATE is what I'm after . . . hmmmmmm

  • rae replied 12 years ago

You are such a code-switcher! I love how you immediately nailed your own style and are now on to conquering RATE. Even down to the RATE model slouch... bravo!

  • Vildy replied 12 years ago

I love it! It's got that All This Style Just Fell Against Me As I Was Getting On With Life look.

  • Lynne replied 12 years ago

I love your RATE-ey poses, Natalie! And Vildy, we need a 'like' button for your comment :).

  • ironkurtin replied 12 years ago

Props! You look fierce! And (my two cents) don't cut your pretty hair... Maybe some layers for texture, if you want a change, but it's so covetously long and thick and dark!

  • Kate replied 12 years ago

I think you did a great job, and I love that look on you, goldenpig. Those boots are beyond fab!

  • CocoLion replied 12 years ago

Good job at going RATE! You look great.

  • catgirl replied 12 years ago

Oooh, nice job - very Kate Spade meets Kate Moss! I am proud of you, girl!

This makes me wonder if color has something to do with RATE. In my mind I was picturing candy pinks somehow...

  • goldenpig replied 12 years ago

Vildy, you crack me up! Hilarious description!

So Una, does that mean I pass muster and can join the RATE brigade? (as I sit here typing this dressed in polka dots & ruffled skirt & pearls & red bow tie belt, hahaha). Thanks for the challenge, this was fun! I love trying new things!

KILLER to the power of KILLER

I am not going to use any labels here. Just sticking to "outrageously fabulous Nathalie". This is my favourite outfit that you have ever posted. One of the very best here on YLF. Verve, texture, and polished spunk.

    Very well played :)

  • goldenpig replied 12 years ago

Wow Angie, you just sent me over the moon! I really need to look into this RATE look some more...Oh, and I guess I can remove "feeble attempt" from the title since you all seem to like it! :) I think I'll wear it IRL tomorrow!

Oh and cjh, I think that style you were describing might be "sporty natural"? That's the look I rocked pre-YLF...fleecy comfort! AKA REI chic! I have a lot of gear and clothes from there because we are into things like hiking, camping, scuba diving & kayaking (or at least, we were into it much more when we had a lot more free time pre-kids). Now my "hobbies" are mostly being a MOTG for my kids...and having fun exploring fashion with my YLF dress-up friends!

  • yellowgirl replied 12 years ago

Fab look, goldenpig! You rocked it, whatever we're going to be calling it!

  • bella replied 12 years ago

Lovely outfit, I also like your attitude in these pictures, suits you!

  • Travelgal Nicole replied 12 years ago

I love the post and the look is killer. I bat for team polished but you pulled this off.

  • Aida replied 12 years ago

Very cute look! Though I don't think you need to slouch to pull this off ;)

  • Jonesy replied 12 years ago

You look great! I love all of the layers. Everything works really well together!

  • Jenava replied 12 years ago

I don't know what you call it, but I like it! Those boot are awesome!

  • Suz replied 12 years ago

    Wow, Natalie, you look AMAZING!!

I just can't believe what a fast learner you are. You really are a fashion prodigy.

I'm so impressed with this outfit and desperately want to steal it.

Oh- and we are scarf twins!!

  • DressLover replied 12 years ago

Awesome outfit! Definitely one of my favorites of yours. Everytime you post that gorgeous trench, I get closer and closer to pulling the trigger on one of my own. :)

  • sarah replied 12 years ago

LOVE it. I'm not expert on labels, but THIS is the best outfit you've posted, IMHO!!!!!!!!

  • RandomThoughts (Andrea) replied 12 years ago

HOW did I miss this post???? I saw it when you linked off Mochi's post about style persona's.

Though I am still finding mine. THIS! Oh I love. I would totally wear this outfit.

  • Mochi replied 12 years ago

I arrived here the same way Andrea did. OMG this outfit is so amazing. And the boots....(can I ask which ones they are? I LOVE them). The funny thing is, I see something Parisian in this look....more than the other pic you were referring to in my thread. I see you riding le Metro and sipping capuccino 0n the streets of Paris!

  • goldenpig replied 12 years ago

Thanks Mochi & Andrea! Mochi, the boots are Aquatalia VaVoom. They are waterproof rain boots. DH calls them my Wonder Woman boots. :) I can't remember, but I think this is the only time I've gotten a K2K rating. I think maybe it helps when Angie sees you are trying to stretch your fashion boundaries and move a little beyond your typical outfits and comfort zone, then she's more likely to award K-status. My guess, anyways....

  • Amy replied 12 years ago

    Chin drops.

    OMG, Nathalie, you look incredible!!!!
