WIW 10/30 & 11/10 Black & burgundy: One hit & one miss

Interestingly, both of these outfits had some similar elements, namely the black turtleneck, long chain necklace and burgundy satchel. But I felt much more fab in the work outfit compared to today's MOTG outfit, which felt kind of frumpy to me. What was it--the waterfall cardigan? The grey color? The top feels a little too short and the pants too low-rise and a tad loose, which makes me feel like I am at risk for plumber's crack when I bend over/squat. And the long cardigan plus long necklace over turtleneck made me feel a little Coldwater Creek-ish. Hm. Suggestions for improvement welcome!

1-3. Lafayette 148 burgundy leather jacket
INC black turtleneck
Halogen burgundy tweed skirt
Clarks black pumps
Betsey Johnson burgundy quilted hearts satchel
Ann Taylor burgundy and gold necklace

4. Black turtleneck, necklace and satchel, plus
Pea in the Pod grey waterfall cardi
AG red snakeskin skinny jeans
Rieker black booties

I love both the outfits though I too feel frumpy in waterfall cardis, so I think I know where you are coming from.  The burgundy leather jacket is TDF!  I think the structure of the outer layer is what makes the outfits frumpy and unfrumpy?

Your choice of greys with the red tones is inspirational. :)

You look so sophisticated in outfit #1!  The colour combo is amazing and that BJ heart bag is super hot along with the burgundy leather jacket and pencil skirt.  HOT!

I think outfit #2 is so close but I maybe a more structured top layer would make you feel less frumpy.  I agree those waterfall cardis can tend to get away from me too.  The grey colour is great with the red snakeskin jeans and black booties.  Maybe a grey or black moto jacket?

I love the little outstretched hands!  LOL

I know there are plenty of waterfall cardigans out there these days but they are just not screaming trendy and fashion forward to me right now... I love the first outfit, and think the second would be great with a little more structure on top.

You look great in both outfits! I love burgundy and black together, and the mix of of textures in the first one is gorgeous.

I have a weakness for big, cozy sweaters, so I wonder if there's a way to tweak the second outfit while keeping the cardigan. Maybe switching out the turtleneck for a black scoop-neck or v-neck or something so there's a little more skin visible to balance out the covered-up-ness of the cardigan might work?

I like both outfits. The second one doesn't have the same level of polish and maybe that's why you feel frumpy.

I like them both, but I actually like waterfall cardis.  I think it's the lack of a structured item that is bothering you.  I've realized that makes me feel frumpy too these days.

Thanks Neel, RunsWithDolphins, Rita, Aubergine, Shedev, Una, & Debra!

Neel, I know what you mean about the waterfall cardigans. They are tricky. I have a red one that I like, but for some reason the grey one just seems frumpier to me. I also have a grey non-waterfall one that I feel less frumpy in.

RunsWithDolphins, I agree a moto jacket would be better. I have a black wool moto that I've worn before with this outfit that I really liked. I also have worn it with the black Spiegel leather jacket. Both of these versions are more me than the one with the cardi. I think I should stick with the version with the wool moto and boots--that's my hands down favorite! Speaking of hands, the outstretched hands are DS1--I was getting ready to put him in the bath, so I had to crop him out of the picture, LOL!

Rita, I know what you mean. I was a little late coming to the waterfall cardi trend. Before YLF I was mainly wearing cardi twinsets. Actually come to think of it, my current style could actually swing back to the retro-ness and matchy matchy of the twinsets!

Aubergine, I think you've hit on the problem. I think it's the combination of waterfall cardi plus turtleneck plus dangling bead necklace that is screaming Coldwater Creek to me.

Shedev, I agree I much prefer the first outfit because it seems more luxe and polished.

Una, the waterfall cardi might have worked better with your grey beanie, but I returned it...it just felt so much more Una than me!

Thanks Debra--I do like burgundy and black a lot--these pants seem to be my favorite jeans lately! I just wish they were a bit higher rise.

The last two outfits are just stunner gorgeous! The pants look even more luscious and they do look better with structured jackets.
