WIW 1/17: Modern classic (with a twist)

Thank you Angie for giving me a new appreciation of modern classic. I always had a slightly negative reaction to that term, but your post is helping me see it in a new light! But I still do truly think that I like classic with a twist, even though you mentioned in your post that everyone claims they want to add a "twist or edge" to classic. Here's my modern classic outfit for today. I think if I was "pure" classic, I would have worn it with a solid colored pencil skirt, like my red pencil skirt. But I picked a crazy colored and patterned Anthro one made out of a sweatshirt type fabric. So yes, I am unapologetically classic with a twist!

Anne Fontaine white button down shirt with double collar (even my button down has to have a twist)
Anthro mustard and orange tile print pencil skirt
H&M mustard skinny belt
Lafayette 148 caramel leather jacket (thrown over my shoulder in classic preppy mode!)
Fossil cognac buckle pumps
White House Black Market champagne triple strand faux pearl necklace

Love this outfit! It's so fun. Now these pmps look gappy in the back too. They don't fall off or flap around? I'm looking to buy some pumps so checking out the "fit" I should be looking for.

I love everything about this outfit. A beautiful modern classic interpretation. I think this is going to be K-word worthy.

  • Angie replied 12 years ago

    KILLER

Your best outfit to date, Natalie.

THIS IS MODERN CLASSIC WITH A LITTLE EDGE. It would be edgier if you left off the necklace.

  • Transcona Shannon replied 12 years ago

Oh my...I love this Natalie. The crisp white shirt with the double collar coupled with that fab and funky skirt...DIVINE! I must say that the shirt fits you perfectly. Gorgeous!

  • Mochi replied 12 years ago

Oh, this outfit has everything going for it: silhouette, color, texture, mix of classic and updated feel. I happen to love the necklace. Truly outstanding.

  • Stephanie replied 12 years ago

So flattering and gorgeous on you, Natalie! :)

  • Sally replied 12 years ago

lovely outfit. That shirt is gorgeous and fits you perfectly. Its great how it has belt loops in it.

edited...no it doesn't have belt loops....my eyes got tricked by the sleeve in the photo.

Wow! This is a perfect outfit!! The colors, the shapes, everything! LOVE!!

(I also think the shoes are a little gappy, btw...)

  • HelenInCanada replied 12 years ago

Absolutely gorgeous! You are rocking the modern classic, memorable-twist style! The look is totally your own. Ahhh, love it all.

  • goldenpig replied 12 years ago

Hah Angie, I put the pearls on for you! I don't normally wear pearls but I thought it would be more "classic" with it.

These Fossil pumps are 7, but they run large according to the reviews (I normally wear 7.5). They're totally comfortable as is so I don't think the gap is a problem. BTW I went and tried on the WHBM blue snakeskin pumps in size 7 but they were way too cramped in the toes so I kept the 7.5 (which are also pretty comfortable for walking despite their height). I think I must have wide toes. I can live with a little gap in the back but I can't walk if my toes are squished.

  • Jem replied 12 years ago

LOVE!!! Such a cool outfit! That's interesting that Angie said it would be *more* edgy without the necklace. Hmmm.... I will have to think about that. Anyway, it's a really great outfit!

  • Sona replied 12 years ago

Agree with Angie: the best look you've posted EVER.

  • Angie replied 12 years ago

The necklace competes with the neckline of the shirt, Natalie.

I hear you on the shoes - my feet are the same way. It's a reality with bony feet.

  • goldenpig replied 12 years ago

OK I'll ditch the pearls! What do you think about the belt? I wasn't sure if I should leave that off too?

  • Angie replied 12 years ago

    LOVE the belt.

  • Karina replied 12 years ago

    Great outfit!

  • rae replied 12 years ago

My gosh I adoooore that skirt! Ah, want it want it want it!! Actually, I love this entire outfit. If you were a mannequin and I had the $, I'd buy the whole set!

  • goldenpig replied 12 years ago

The pencil skirt is on sale at Anthro (I think it's still available). It also comes in navy/mustard. I normally wear 4-6 in skirts but went with the 6 because it's a bit short and body-conscious and the 4 felt a little too bootylicious for work. There isn't a slit in the back but the material is soft and stretchy.

  • rae replied 12 years ago

Rats, I don't see it on their website. Oh well, a sign to focus on pants, I guess... so cute on you!!

  • kellygirl replied 12 years ago

Super duper. Thanks for posting : ) It's great to see "modern classic with an edge" in action.

    Here it is:

I think the orange is called "red motif" and navy is "blue motif". They used to have a longer green one too but that's long gone.

You're right, it's sold out online. But I bet there's still plenty in the stores--if you call customer service with the style # they can tell you which stores still have your size and then you just call that store and ask them to do a "charge and send". And shipping is free if you say that your local Anthro didn't have your size. I have found lots of sold-out online Anthro pieces that way.

Or there's always eBay. Not to be an enabler or anything! ;)

  • goldenpig replied 12 years ago

Oh Rae! I forgot to mention! I have the size 4 in orange. I was going to return it today but if you want it I can send it to you instead! I don't remember what size you are.

  • catgirl replied 12 years ago

I had that skirt in my cart at Anthro but decided not to pull the trigger because I have so many skirts already. Fab outfit, Natalie!

  • replied 12 years ago

This is my favourite of your outfits up to date! I LOVE IT! Love the belt, and the colors, and that pencil is crazy cool and sweet at the same time:)
(Also, I understand that gap in the back doesn't bother you. It would bother me, but our feet are different )

  • Angie replied 12 years ago

I am looking at this outfit again and changing my rating to:

KILLER to the power of KILLER

That means one of the very best on YLF. (Modern Classic and all I might add :))

  • morethanbeige replied 12 years ago

OMG, I love this outfit. The blouse, the skirt, the jacket! Stunning!

  • Jjsloane replied 12 years ago

Definitely one of my favorite outfits (and I like the necklaces). Great skirt and youve styled it all in a very flattering and beautiful way.

  • Firecracker (Sharan) replied 12 years ago

Gorgeous outfit on you. Wow!! I really like the pearls with the skirt, although I can see Angie's point about competing with the blouse. (I wouldn't have seen it or figured it out on my own, though.) I can see myself doing Modern Classic like this. Thanks for the inspiration!

  • nicoleb replied 12 years ago

Very nice! I think the colors in the skirt are really great on you!

  • JennyAnne replied 12 years ago

Beautiful! I expecially love the colors - orange and light brown and yellow and white. Lovely!

  • Jewell replied 12 years ago

This outfit is divine! I love the "twist" to each of your classic pieces!
