WIW 1/2: simple red and black

This is what I wore today. Only Mine red cowl-neck cashmere sweater, and black Gap Real Skinny pants and black suede Giveable flats (similar to Angie's birthday outfit post). Also with a black obi belt. I feel comfy and warm, but get the feeling this is a little too boring to deserve a WIW. Am I right--is this boring?

Oh, by the way, I've seen the Giveable flats in multiple colors on sale at multiple places including Zappos and Stuartweitzman.com. Just saying...

love the belting! It creates a very defined waist on you.

And GP: there is no such thing as a boring WIW!!!

Depending on what you were doing you could chnage the look up with the addition of a jacket, accessories or heels but as is it is fab too!

Ooh cute! I love how you've belted the sweater. Not boring at all! Simple and chic.

Can you tell me how you like the Only Mine cashmere? I've read some comments about it not holding up very well to wear. Your sweater certainly looks pretty!

  • replied 12 years ago

That is the most beautiful color on you! I think your look is simple and strong. Please don't tell me it's boring because that will mean that I am a *very* boring dresser!

Not boring at all! The obi adds a little something that a plain belt wouldn't and the whole look is clean and sleek.

I also would like to know what you think of the Only Mine cashmere:)

  • rae replied 12 years ago

No way is this boring! It is "strong and simple," which is not just a euphemism for boring. The cowl, the tie on the obi, contrast of textures between knit and leather, and lovely fit of everything makes the difference!

NOT boring. Don't even say it. I think it fits nicely in with your fashion persona - demure bombshell. It has a sweet but sophisticated retro vibe - kind of 50's with the slim pants and ballet flats. I love the obi belt - you look beautiful!

I love the clean, bold look here! It's NOT boring! I adore this sort of statement and it suits you so well because your beautiful dark hair completes the dramatic contrasts :-)

I think the addition of the obi belt elevates it from boring to fab. Although the sweater is a great color and even without the belt, it would look good.

Very nice strong, simple look. You look great!

This outfit is a perfect example that you don't need to have a lot going on to look chic.

Not boring at all - as others have said, it's a "strong and simple" look. The belt really elevates the outfit, and I really like the whole look on you - it's extremely flattering.

I am also curious as to what you think of OnlyMine cashmere - I was thinking of ordering some of the sweaters too since I *still* have "Navy V-Neck Sweater-itis" from the Parisian Chic book.

    Nothing simple here...just Fab!

  • HelenInCanada replied 12 years ago

Oh jeepers, that red cashmere sweater is GORGE-jus!!! C'est impossible that such a beautiful piece could be boring! Love the whole look - awesome belt. It's a relaxed but very pretty style.

Thanks guys! I have to retrain my newly ALGO brain all the time to stop thinking that simple=boring. I don't think that way about others (Claire, I don't think your looks are boring at all--they are simply graceful and casually elegant!) but for some reason I have a hard time believing it about myself, especially when there's no patterns involved. :)

Red top and black pants & shoes was a very classic and typical combo for me pre-YLF and it's nice to revisit the formula again but in an updated way. Previously it would have been crew neck short sleeve Liz Claiborne red sweater (a little too short and boxy, having to tug it constantly over my mummy tummy), black BR trousers (a little old and faded, slightly too big and imperfect PPL), white crew socks and black Merrell mocs or Dansko clogs, and no belt (what's a belt?). Red is one of my favorite colors and I like the way it looks now much better!

As for the quality of the cashmere, I can't really say as I haven't had it for very long and am not a cashmere expert. I'm new to cashmere and have only had the sweaters for about 2-3 months. One of them (the teal one) that I have worn the most is pilling slightly along the sides/front--not horribly, but I should probably look into getting a sweater stone. The rest of them seem OK so far--I have four total. I do also have a plum Classiques Entier cowl neck cashmere sweater that seems to be holding up a little better--only a couple of pills. I also have a J Crew "Dream" cashmere blend ivory turtleneck that is not as soft or thick as the Only Mines and I don't like wearing it as much (like if your hands are dry and you rub your hand over the sweater it kind of catches a little on your dry skin). The Only Mines are very very soft and I love the colors, so I like wearing them a lot. It's hard for me to stomach paying more than $100 for knit sweaters so I think the OM's fit the bill nicely for me, but I admit I am not a cashmere connossieur. I think the CE's are a little higher quality, but the OM's are pretty nice too. Haven't tried any premium cashmere brands to see if there is a difference.

    I love that look.

Red and black often go well together.

Not boring at all! Love this!

  • sarah replied 12 years ago

NOT boring. I really like this a lot!

  • marianna replied 12 years ago

Simple yet so stylish. I love this!

  • Jem replied 12 years ago

I love the red color on you! And, I can only imagine how soft that sweater is! Nice outfit!

  • kimlee replied 12 years ago

Natalie - There is nothing boring about this look. First off, you are wearing RED - a bright, fun color that looks wonderful on you. Next, you wear skinny pants, which are never boring. Lastly, the obi belt is an update accessory. This is a simply elegent and beautiful look on you.

  • Mo replied 12 years ago

Agreed - it does not have to be ALGO to be worthy of a WIW!! Looks great.

  • nancylee replied 12 years ago

I really love this classic and elegant look, gp. And thanks for showing off your obi belt. I've been eying them for a long time now, and you're giving this belt-phobic YLFer the courage to give one a try.

  • Amy replied 12 years ago

Thanks for the info on the Only Mine sweaters. I think I'll give one a try.

  • catgirl replied 12 years ago

I think this a fab, simple, pretty and very Natalie look that works perfectly! Maybe you're finding it boring because you want to branch out a bit, but it is totally lovely.

  • jayne replied 12 years ago

great choice of color and the belt really works!
