WIW 1/8 Burgundy and K/R La Ligne striped sweaters/tops sizing/fit?

I wore my new burgundy scarf sweater (fun that it comes with a built in scarf!), cherry Docs, and Burberry trench, and my old leather skirt and Burberry tote to work (1-2). Literally every single person at work made a comment about how I looked nice and was wearing real clothes instead of scrubs. I think it's been so long since I dressed up at the office that they were all in shock!

I wanted to get some additional striped tops/sweaters like my favorite La Ligne navy/white striped tee (3) and I have a 10% off coupon for my first order. I went to try stuff on at the La Ligne store and I remembered why I hate shopping for clothes, because I'm so apple-y things don't look like they do on the website models. Also it makes the sizing really inconsistent. Some of the tighter fitting shirts I needed to size up to large, but on the baggy sweaters, I had to size down to small because the medium and large were too voluminous and made me look even huger. Anyways sorry for all the pics, but I am considering the following tops (4) and was wondering what you think about how they look on me and sizing?

5-8 is the Lean Lines sweater in L in the white and black stripes I'm considering, it's very soft and I like how it is a bit looser on the sides than the M (9-11), but the arms are very long on the large compared to the medium--which size should I go with--I'm torn between L and M? (They only have M online but I can go back to the store to see if they still have the L).

They also have a cream and navy striped Marin sweater which is very similar looking but a bit thicker (12-13), it's very baggy and I had to size down to a S. But I was most interested in the navy and white Marin sweater which they didn't have in the store but I could order online, that's like the sweater version of my favorite tee (unfortunately they don't sell that tee anymore or I would buy a spare!). They did have a burgundy and rust Marin sweater that I also really like (15-19) and I may get that as a fall/winter sweater whereas the navy and white could be more of a spring/summer (we get fog so summers are still cool!), I like both colors, what do you think?

I'm also looking at the Breton striped tee in short sleeve in navy/tan (20-21) and long sleeved maybe in white and grey striped (22), both in small. I would love a white and grey striped shirt to wear under some of my other sweaters/jackets. I would mostly wear these with jeans which would be able to rein in the belly better.

I'll include the outtakes so you can see why I find it hard to shop! I was getting a bit demoralized! They had stuff I was hoping would work, like a floral palazzo pants and bias cut silk skirt (I had both of those in the 90's and wanted to get a replacement), but they looked horrible with my apple shape. 23 was a cute dress, I love plaid and the ruching and fit and flare, but they only had a 6 which was too tight and I'm not sure brown is my color. 24-26 I tried to create an outfit and I loved the idea of the colors and pattern mixing, but the execution was all wrong on me, the mini Marin cropped sweater hits right across the widest part of my belly, and the unstructured pants let everything all hang out. Molly tee (26) I had to size up to a L, I liked the colors but it's too expensive for what looks like a Gap shirt and I like the blue and white tee I already have better. 27-30 is the same Breton short sleeve tee above, but with the silk skirt and stretchy pants, uggh. And 31-34 is the Marin sweater in XS (I just wanted to make sure I was getting the right size), I'm even cradling my food baby to show how pregnant I look! Haha!

Thanks for your advice, these are kind of expensive but I think fairly classic pieces that I could wear for a long time. I just want to see whether you think they look good on me or not! Feel free to tell me if I'm way off base!

First off the dress in 23 looks incredible. Obviously you know if it is too tight but in the photo it looks really good, a great cut and colour for you. Now off to study the tops, I'll be back.

I am swooning over your burgundy work outfit!! And if you love burgundy and you love stripes, check out this beauty from Rails!

I think the navy and white marine sweater that is only available on-line is the best colour as well as the burgundy and rust. Those seem to suit you moody style better than a white one, and will slot in easily. You say the navy short sleeve version is a tried and tested favourite. I like 20/21/22. I prefer the fit of L for the lean lines sweater but the sleeves are very long, as you mentioned.

So many photos, I have to consider in specific points!
    1. The Lean Lines sweater. I’m with Star that I prefer the L, except for the sleeves. As a 5 foot 1 petite myself I frequently need to turn up sleeves though and like the look IF I can make a nice tidy cuff, so it depends on whether you can or if the cuff would feel too long or thick. I think you might feel happier in the L?
    2. The Marin sweater. I like the size S, and really love the burgundy stripe on you. Navy and white sounds like a fave. If you can afford both happily then since you obviously keep clothes for many years (so do I and am happy about it, I am not a person who follows trends very much so I don’t worry about looking “current”) then I think you should get the wear out of both.
    3. I like the Breton stripe in navy/tan much better in the short sleeved version than the long sleeved. It looks a better fit? Again the sleeves are too long in the long sleeved, but you could turn them up, I often have to do that too, which I do myself. I notice that the short sleeved very much has a dropped shoulder which is being discussed on the forum as well in a thread by Jaime, so make sure you like that.
I am not sure about the brown dress, if brown is your colour or not. Did you say on another thread that you are a Dark Autumn? Were your colours done professionally or did you just decide you were that, is that colour in your palette?
Finally, I sympathise about the apple shape, I have that too though mine has somewhat improved well past menopause which doesn’t help you as you are much younger. I wonder if in your renewed enthusiasm you are trying to buy too many clothes at once?

Love the dress but it looks a bit long in the torso. I also like the yellow sweater just not with those pants. Also, t-shirt in #20-21 is cute. I find striped and teal sweaters are too long on you. But it could be my own bias as a petite woman.

Your work outfit is absolutely gorgeous!

KILLER work outfit, Natalie! You wear a column of burgundy, beautifully :)

The best fitting item that your tried on from this batch is #20/21. Super cute and very versatile. Love it with the skirt!

The next best item is #5 to 8. The L is a much better fit than the M. The L needs to have its sleeved cuffed once. See if you like the look of that, and if so - thumbs up!

Like Irina, I find the other sweaters too long. The mustard sweater is a good length, although not the best fit.

Like Mary, I was going to suggest you try this one:

Thanks for the input! I found the sweater Angie and Mary suggested at Nordstrom for slightly cheaper than Bloomingdale's (https://www.nordstrom.com/s/al.....er/8374341) so I'll give that a try, although I'm not as fond of the pink stripes as the rust stripes so I'm not sure if it will jive with my autumn color preferences. Regarding the length of the La Ligne sweaters, they come in regular length and mini length, and the Marin (wool/cashmere) and Marina (cotton). Not all of the color combos come in all of the options and the striping is different. As an apple, if you think the regular length is too long, do you recommend the mini length? (like the mustard sweater). I took a large in the mini versions and I wasn't sure if I could pull off the cropped look with my belly? I'd definitely always have to wear an undershirt so my belly doesn't peek out. There's also another colorway, instead of the burgundy and rust, they have a navy with rust stripes in the Marina cotton, in both mini and regular versions. Mini: https://lalignenyc.com/product.....-navy-rust or Regular: https://lalignenyc.com/product.....-navy-rust There is a mini Marina and a regular Marina in navy and white stripes too, although the striping pattern is a bit different than the Marin (fewer and narrower stripes): https://lalignenyc.com/product.....navy-cream https://lalignenyc.com/product.....navy-cream I don't know if that's better than the Marin version (7)? They don't make a mini marin in navy and white. Here is the Marina regular length on me in a different color in S (1-2) (didn't try on a mini Marina, because I didn't realize that there was a difference in the cotton vs cashmere/wool ones). Let me know if you have an opinion on the striping and colors! I agree that the cropped length looks cuter, but I wasn't sure if I could pull it off with my shape?

  • goldenpig replied 1 week ago

Oh also, I found out they do have the plaid dress in a larger size 8, and they also make a Michaela dress in the floral pattern I like, so I may try that one to see if that color is better for me.

I know it seems like I'm trying on a lot all at once, but it's because I'm returning 90% of the stuff I order online! And it's hard to figure out fit and sizing, even when trying on in person.

  • Irina replied 1 week ago

Absolutely try the dress and shorter sweaters. I’m an apple shape, too and often shorter tops look better than longer. Also, try sweaters with a skirt or higher waist bottoms.

  • Star (Lise) replied 1 week ago

When I pick up a few kilos they immediately go to my tummy so I empathise. I often wear an exposed under garment to cover it too but obviously I will wear an item more often if I don't feel like I have to do that. I find a shorter top can look good on me from the front and then when I see the side view I hate it.

I like both dresses very much.

I think both burgundy sweaters will fit in your wardrobe. I personally prefer it with the rust stripes

  • Jenni NZ replied 1 week ago

Well I always feel strange if I disagree with Angie, and I know Irina is excellent on lengths/proportions, but I actually prefer the longer length in the sweaters, and like Star I like the rust stripes better than the pink. I guess we’re allowed to have different opinions!

Oh I love the burgundy work outfit! No wonder you got compliments! It's superb!

Love the outfit Angie commented on too....
