WIW 2/9 Orange bag upgrade: MZ Wallace to Hermes

Guilty confession: I told you I was a very bad girl and splurged on a few handbags, which is why I'm not planning to buy any more clothes this year if I can help it, since I've blown my yearly fashion budget. Here is one of them (the most expensive one!). I went to Hermes looking for a Collier de Chien bracelet a couple weeks ago. I met a nice SA and ended up with not one but two bracelets (which you've seen now in my WIWs) and then she also showed me some handbags. Well, I fell in love with an orange one that is just gorgeous. It's called the Jypsiere and is a messenger bag designed by Jean Paul Gaultier. It has elements of both the Birkin and Kelly bags (both of which you can't get unless you're a VIP customer and spend lots of $$ there before they'll even offer you one). After I went home, I started wondering if I should bring it back, because I already have an orange MZ Wallace. I've used the heck out of it as a diaper bag, and I was worried it was an unnecessary duplication. But I didn't realize how dirty and beat up it's gotten till I pulled it out to take a comparison pic. I brought the Hermes bag back to the store to see if there were any alternative bags I liked better (unfortunately no returns allowed, only exchanges!). I tried a bunch of other bags, but in the end this one was the best fit for me both style and color wise. So I decided to keep it. Hopefully these two orange bags are different enough that I can justify keeping both? Since I've used my old orange bag a ton, I'm sure I'll get lots of use out of this new one too! I'll still keep the old one for excursions with the kids (it fits a lot more and has lots of compartments), but use the new one for work and fancier events. Oh, and when I went back to do the possible return, my SA surprised me with a wallet that she saved for me because she thought it would be perfect for me. It's a gorgeous blue Kelly wallet. And I also ended up with a scarf that matches both the bag and wallet. This store is super dangerous for my wallet...I need to stop visiting there! Hope you all don't think I was foolish to buy such an expensive bag...I'll keep it forever and my daughter is already asking if she can inherit it!

I'll do a proper WIW with my new bag later this month! Super excited!

That bag is beautiful! It doesn't compare to your other orange bag. And it looks like it's Hermes, but not like a birkin or Kelly which are almost cliched. (Well not really, but you know what I mean.) you wil have that forever. Is the scarf a 36" square? I love scarves and it Is my dream to have a Hermes scarf. ( if I wanted to splurge, I could order one but I want to go to a store and have the whole experience.) I was wearing one of my scarves ( not Hermes) yesterday and I remembered wearing it on a job interview in 1992. So If you take care of them, they can last. Are you a reader of the blog Mai Tais Picture Book? If not you need to be! It's about all things Hermes, and she sells scarf rings and bag inserts and beautiful necklaces.

Love it, it's very you! Wear it in good health.

It's my first Hermes scarf retailgirl. It's a shawl actually. 55" x 55". It's called Collection Imperiale and has an Chinese cloisonne pattern which is meaningful to me because of my heritage. Yes I'm hoping to keep this one forever! Thanks for the suggestion. I will look up the Mai Tai site...I really haven't been a scarf girl before so I need to learn how to tie them!

It is really beautiful. Enjoy being gorgeous in it and your daughter can obviously already sense how special it is! Enjoy it xx

  • retailgirl replied 8 years ago

That size will be perfect for your climate...you could put that on over a blazer, it would look great. Do you know Hermes Has an app for your iPad? It's very entertaining. But you'll love Mai tais picture book and you could spend hours going through the archives. There are lots of scarf how tos.

I'll have to come back to comment Natalie, after I've recovered from picture #12!

  • dashielle (Ann) replied 8 years ago

Oh my god Natalie, that is a gorgeous bag and a Gaultier! Congrats and you are a braver sole than I...last time I was in a Hermes store (in Boston) they brought out a Birkin for me to try on. I should have taken a selfie, and it was a 'cheap' one at $16k. I 'only' purchased a wallet/folio in the same Hermes orange as your bag. It's showing it's age from being battered around in my bag for some time, so won't be in my will. ;-)

  • goldenpig replied 8 years ago

Wow Ann, they showed you a Birkin? My SA said those are only for VIPs! You should have taken a pic! My purse was not that expensive. Good thing they didn't show me a B or K because I would have been sorely tempted! So we are orange twins! Would love to see your wallet!

Thanks everyone! I was worried I was going to be chastised!

  • Jaime replied 8 years ago

There is no comparison between the bags. You look perfect in #9. Enjoy your beautiful new treats!

  • Echo replied 8 years ago

Natalie, I think it was an excellent purchase! It already takes the place of an orange bag you knew was a workhorse, and it is just stunning. The wallet and the scarf are also gorgeous additions. I think you made a GREAT decision. It is an investment bag, but will grace your wardrobe forever, and who can put a price on that? Congrats!

  • catgirl replied 8 years ago

Well, of course that's freaking gorgeous - but what do you mean they won't offer you a Birkin? Shades of aristocracy!

  • rachylou replied 8 years ago

What?! Not Gucci?! Scandalous! Lol. Just kidding. Looks great. I'm sure you'll have it forever. To be honest, I have a Hermès scarf (what?! not Gucci?! scandalous!) and really I don't need or possibly even want any other scarf that I have. It's just the perfect thing always.

ps: If you buy too many Birkins, they'll also refuse to sell you more. Lol.

  • El Cee replied 8 years ago

Love your outfit with the white bootcuts and fun pops of orange. Your Hermes bag is gorgeous and a true classic. Your other bag is nice -- a fun, sporty look -- but no comparison to your new wardrobe addition. I like your new scarf as well. The pattern is lovely. Enjoy your new purchases.

  • kkards replied 8 years ago

ok, just my opinion, but anyone who can say that they got a ton of use out of an orange bag, needs another!
beautiful bag and i'm in awe of your not going basic black (which is what i would have done!)

  • goldenpig replied 8 years ago

    Thanks so much everyone!
Rachy, would love to see your Hermes scarf in action.n Definitely will NOT have the problem of buying too many Birkins!
Kkards, funny but true that I will use the orange bag more than a black. But if Hermes made a studded black version, all bets are off...

  • replied 8 years ago

Oh, such jewels on display in pic 5! Gorgeous, gorgeous choices and such fab colours. I love every piece. I agree with Retailgirl on Birkins and Kellys--I think it's more interesting to step outside those expected norms.

  • replied 8 years ago

There is a major wow-factor with your new bag. I mean Wow! And coupled with the clutch and scarf...really really luxurious :-)
    Also really like your outfit.

  • Angie replied 8 years ago

The new bag is Killer to the Power of Killer. No comparison. It found the best home. ENJOY!

  • kellygirl replied 8 years ago

Sensational bag. Totally you. It blows the MZ Wallace away by miles :)

  • replied 8 years ago

Awesome bag!!! Love it. I do prefer it to the MZ as I like the cleaner lines. What a gorgeous wallet and scarf too. The Halogen floral sweater and navy peacoat look great with your new pet...enjoy!

  • replied 8 years ago

Everyone should own a beautiful scarf and bag that make you happy.  You got it.

  • Momo replied 8 years ago

The bag is beautiful and the scarf.. Wow!!!

  • MsMaven replied 8 years ago

Gorgeous! The bag, wallet and scarf together are sumptuous. The new bag is perfect for you.

I bought my one and only Hermes scarf after a mid-1980s trip to Paris. It had horses and animals on it. I've seen some Hermes online recently that is absolutely gorgeous and I am tempted. I wore the old scarf to death long ago. It cost $315, which I thought was outrageous then.

I need a new wallet too. That blue one is so tempting.

  • replied 8 years ago

GoldenPig, I would never think you were foolish for investing in a gorgeous handbag.  I just paid for new carpeting.  I have a few house repairs that I want to get done this year and then I am going to buy a high-end tote or handbag.  This has been a dream of mine for a while, but the timing was never right.

You are actually living my dream and orange is such a gorgeous color for you.  I second what Linder51 posted.  Yay for you.

There is no comparison between the two orange bags.  The new bag takes my breath away.  I want to reach out and touch it  The color is rich.  The structure of the bag is unique and interesting.  I hope to see it in many future WIWs.

  • Bijou replied 8 years ago

Your bag looks so perfect on you and it is timeless.  I have always thought that if I were to buy a Hermes bag, it would have to be the classic Hermes orange.

  • lyn67 replied 8 years ago

Wow, orange  is the new black, especially, if such a great craft and name!!!

  • Diana replied 8 years ago

That is a BEAUTIFUL new wardrobe pet and it's perfect for you!

  • Maneera replied 8 years ago

Congrats on the gorgeous new wardrobe pet! I LOVE #12! What beauties!!!

To put your mind at ease, your old orange bag and the new one look very different to me. So don't stress over 'duplication' at all! Love the wallet & scarf too

  • Muffin replied 8 years ago

Gorgeous! And I agree, anyone who has worn out an orange bag deserves another- and there is nothing like Hermes orange!

  • Beth Ann replied 8 years ago

Love the new bag -- it's polished and chic.  Wear the old one when when the weather's bad, or your going somewhere it might get scuffed or dirty --- it will be so much better than the cheap vinyl I carry when I travel.  Save the new one for work, or going on the town.

  • annagybe replied 8 years ago

That is a great bag. I didn't know Gaultier did a collaboration with them.
    Seriously a good choice.

  • Ginkgo replied 8 years ago

The new bag is stunning, you'll get a lot of wear out of it, and I'm overcome by the sight of that gorgeous scarf.  These are your best colors and I look forward to seeing your fab outfits incorporating them.

  • dashielle (Ann) replied 8 years ago

Sorry for the delayed response, been down with the flue. The wallet's rather well-worn from rattling around in my bags, I'm afraid. I could have chosen a more robust color, but well...I declined to purchase the matching pen for $150, proving that I hadn't completely lost my mind.

  • Kari replied 8 years ago

The handbag is stunning! Amazing upgrade. You wear a LOT of colors that bright orange coordinates with so even though it's an unusual choice, I can see you getting tons of mileage from it.
I am a huge fan of colorful bags. I get way more use from them than I do black bags, and they make me far happier.
Totally digging the scarf too. The pattern is amazing.

I'll make a small confession: I recently added 2 Hermes scarves - secondhand, in great condition from a reputable reseller, and at a price that is expensive for a scarf but quite reasonable for that brand - to my wardrobe. I love silk scarves but I'm picky about texture, and hopefully I can keep these in great shape for a long time.
Wearing one in my photo here, Voiles de Lumiere. The other one is Eperon D'or in royal blue and emerald green with gold accents.
(And I've been enjoying MaiTai's blog for years-I think the scarf rings she sells are more than I want to pay, but I do want to get some through more budget friendly sources. I also read that visiting a tack shop to get a miniature bit and snaffle looks quite similar but is way cheaper than the Hermes version.)

  • retailgirl replied 8 years ago

Kari, I thought that was a Hermes! Beautiful. Do you follow Mai Tai's Picture Book? ( not to sound like a broken record, but it is so visually appealing and full of great tips.) I guess I have to put a Hermes scarf on my bucket list...other people have experiences on theirs but mine is acquisitions! But it's only a scarf and Cape Cod watch, and a Chanel bag. Not the flap one, too small, but a quilted tote.

  • CocoLion replied 8 years ago

I'm so glad I caught this thread ... the bag, wallet and scarf are very beautiful.

  • dashielle (Ann) replied 8 years ago

Kari, you look gorgeous in your scarf! I have one too, but never wear it unfortunately. Will probably sell it, but I love it for a reminder of my horsey days. Re. snaffles, the smallest they make is for minis, and even still they're ~3.5 inch bit plus the snaffle rings.

  • Kari replied 8 years ago

Ann, that's beautiful. Definitely a good reminder! (My mom owned and showed horses while she was growing up, too.)

  • Kari replied 8 years ago

Retailgirl-yes! I've read and admired Maitai's blog for years. She has such elegant style. I
Like how she consistently lets her accessories take center stage.
