WIW 4/14-22: My first travel capsule--SoCal vacation (pic heavy!)

Hi YLF'ers! Sorry I've been mostly absent from the forum for the last week, but we were in Southern California for a family vacation and I didn't have time to keep up or post anything. So I'm making up for it now--sorry for the huge post and tons of pics!

I love Angie's wardrobe capsule posts, but haven't really tried to do a capsule before. When I travel, I usually have been wearing casual clothes/gear, like swimsuits, T shirts & shorts or jeans and a hoodie. This is my first attempt at creating a travel capsule. I tried to wear most of the pieces more than once and remix the outfits. I could have been a little more efficient (I only wore a couple of the T shirts, the shorts and the sundress once and yes I brought too many bags and shoes) but overall I'm happy with what I ended up wearing. We went from sunny and hot to cool and breezy, and I was prepared for everything! I wore a simplified color scheme of red, black, white, navy, green, yellow & orange and kept things casual/MOTG appropriate, but dressier than I have ever been while traveling. Thank goodness for Jason Wu and white denim! It was a busy and tiring but fun vacation--the kids and DH and I had a blast! It was a great fashion learning experience for me too, learning how to pack a travel wardrobe!

Here are the pieces I wore:
Tulle navy peacoat
AE white denim cropped jacket
INC red waterfall cardigan
Ann Taylor Loft kelly green sweater jacket

Shirts: Ann Taylor Loft floral blouse
Jason Wu for Target cat tee
Bluefly Casual Couture black/white polka dot blouse
Jason Wu for Target red/navy/cream striped tee
Gap navy and beige striped tee

Kut from the Kloth white skinny jeans
Gap Always Skinny jeans
Jason Wu for Target shorts

Jason Wu for Target blue and white floral sundress

Soybu black and white patterned Wanderlust skirt

Red skinny bow belt
Yellow skinny belt

Red Converse
Yellow Converse
Black Dansko sandals
Orange flip-flop sandals
Black Merrell mocs

Jujube Be Prepared diaper bag
Kate Spade orange slice bag
Jason Wu for Target cat tote
White House Black Market red snakeskin purse

1-2. Sat 4/14: We drove overnight to San Diego Friday after work. That was grueling--the I-5 was closed so we had to detour through the 101 and by the time we got there it was 8 am, 13 hours later! We met up with my side of the family--everyone including my mom and two sisters and one of my brothers and all their kids met there for the weekend. We went to La Jolla Cove where my sister's boyfriend suprised us by popping the question right on the beach in front of the whole family! Actually, they had been engaged for a while already, but waited to announce it to us until the whole family was together. We are all so excited for them! And now DD is going to be a flower girl along with her cousins and DS will be a ringbearer in their wedding in Sedona, Arizona!
3-5. Sun 4/15: San Diego Zoo. Kids liked the panda the best. Thought you'd like seeing my mom and me side by side...I guess our tastes are more similar than I thought! She's wearing red skinny jeans, a Bebe zigzag stripe one-shoulder top and navy Converse type shoes--she's more fashion forward than I am! :) She even knew that my t-shirt was a Jason Wu for Target!
6. Mon 4/16. Went to visit MIL's house in Irvine. Forgot to get a decent picture that day but I wore black sandals and the red belt similar to #23 without a jacket.
7-12. Tues 4/17. Disneyland! It was the first time for DS and DD. They loved it, and we had a lot of fun too! Neither of us had been there since we were young. We had lunch with the princesses and DD was THRILLED (see #10!) to meet five princesses, including her favorite Belle (she wore two different yellow Belle dresses to match). It was hot, so I ditched the red cardigan and DD and I enjoyed some Dole Whips. I was so glad I wore my comfy Merrell mocs instead of the Converse--our legs/feet were sore by the end of the day from all that walking!
13-16. Wed 4/18. Played at the park with Grandma. It was hot again, so I wore shorts. DD and DS had lots of fun climbing.
17-19. Wed 4/18 eve. Went to visit FIL in Diamond Bar. I wore a dress and orange sandals and my orange bag. DD and DS were so cute together, especially with their matching PJ's and Mickey and Minnie stuffed mouses. Then we drove overnight to Monterey for a little "just our family" time.
20-22. Thurs 4/19. We went on an afternoon sailing trip on Monterey Bay with the kids. They both promptly fell asleep with the rocking of the waves and we ended up holding them in our arms the entire two hours. We both had sore arms! I wore a red, white and navy "nautical" outfit.
23. Thurs 4/19 eve. I changed to a skirt and we went out for dinner. It was only to El Torito, and we were with the kids, but it was still nice to dress up a bit. ;)
24-25. Fri 4/20. Went to the beach with the kids in the morning. I swapped white jeans for blue jeans, but otherwise it was the same outfit as #1 (I guess it's the beach outfit).
26-29. Fri 4/21 eve. We visited Monterey Bay Aquarium in the late afternoon--it was just before closing and was nice and uncrowded. Afterward we walked back along the beach and the kids had fun jumping from a big rock while holding our hands. The JWT cat tote was a good smaller diaper bag substitute. The Jujube is a behemoth and DH complains everytime I bring it, because I usually stuff it to the gills--I do like to Be Prepared! I hook it on the back of the double stroller (see #30).
30-33. Sat 4/22. DD took the pic of me in #30. Went back to the Aquarium. It was much more crowded today so it was nice that we got to see a lot already yesterday. We took a picture in the exact spot (#32) where DH and I held hands and took our first picture together, on our first date twenty years ago! And now we have two little ones who love to hold our hands!

Thanks for looking and letting me share my vacation pics with you all!

Isn't is great to be prepared for everything while traveling? Thanks for sharing your travel pictures with us! Your babies are adorable!
My kids are all grown up but when we traveled with them when they were little I did not look as good as you on this trip. I think you did a great job of staying stylish and comfortable which is not a small achievement for a family vacation with small childresn in tow.

  • Diana replied 8 years ago

You and your family are so adorable, Natalie! It looks like you put together a really nice, practical, and stylish capsule for an active vacation - good job at sticking to a single color palette. I really like the pattern mixing going on in #6 and wish I could have seen the whole outfit, and I think the Milu tote is the perfect finishing touch for these ensembles (love it, it's the only Jason Wu piece I really wanted but never found).

I love seeing all the vacation photos too... I grew up in SoCal so these are all the same places I went to for family vacations when I was a kid! =)

PS - Your mom looks so young! I can see that she is really stylish but her style seems to be a bit more flashy and less demure than yours, but I don't think it's a bad thing at all to be compared to her.

SO much fun watching all your pics! What a great family and adorable kids! All your outfits looks so well put together and comfortable and fitting such a casual-with kids-vacation :-) i'll be coming back to read and look more carefully later :-) Thanks for sharing! :-)

What happy pictures! You are starting my Sunday with a smile, Natalie. You look wonderful and your family is beautiful.

  • nancylee replied 8 years ago

What fun! Beautiful pics...and you look SO good in red. You all look so happy and relaxed. I love all of your looks, but I have to admit your children are so adorable that they sort of steal the show. :)

Well done Natalie! You and the family look lovely and sounds like you had a great time.

  • rae replied 8 years ago

OMG, this is the best vacation album ever! The boat pics, the ones with the kiddies jumping off the rocks... so gorgeous, and you looked comfy and stylish in every frame. Your mom looks cute dressed down in casual wear!

WOW! Love this, Natalie! Thank you for sharing your amazing So-Cal family pics - looks like you all had a fantastic time! Glorious shots. The pic with Belle is really sweet- I see DD has her own matching gown. Priceless! And not that it's a surprise, but you look chic and ladylike no matter what outfit you chose. Travel capsule was a success!

  • jayne replied 8 years ago

First the wardrobe is perfect. You look great in all the shots, well put together and sharp! Great packing and styling!

Then the family, you gotta hide those cuties of yours. They are just adorable! I can just imagine their cute little voices and soft skin...missing that with teenagers in the house!

    great vacation!

Looks like you had a very packed week (and may be ready for a rest day) and it is fun to see all the great happy family pictures. My family loves the San Diego Zoo - that is really my favorite SoCal city. And we used to live in the Monterey area so those pictures made me a bit nostalgic.
Your capsule served you well - some good mixing and you were prepared for the variety of microclimates. Your DD is also very stylish :) I like the picture with her holding her pretty floral dress out for the camera.
    Fun week!

Fabulicious, all around! You look great, and of course your littlies are adorable times a million!!

(Your mom is scaring me a little, though! Next to oh-so-fresh-and-pretty you, she has a definite MDAL vibe going on.)

  • Mirp replied 8 years ago

Your family is so gorgeous. Glad you had a great time.

  • Suz replied 8 years ago

AWWWW!!! SUPER sweet, Natalie. Thanks for sharing these! Your kids are the cutest ever! And it looks as if you really had some great family time together on this trip.

Your outfits look terrific. Love that pic of you and your mom - it is almost as if you planned out your colours together! So cute that you are both wearing Cons.

I think my faces among your outfits are 23 and 24, but it's tough to choose because they all look great and perfectly appropriate to the occasions!

  • cheryl replied 8 years ago

Natalie, your family is just beautiful and i love all of your smiling faces.

You did a fantastic job with your travel capsule. You look amazing in each and every pic. Hope hubby is starting to understand and appreciate your love for fashion because you rock every look!

I love your moms style. Funky, sassy, fun and stylish.

Just had to say one more time how adorable your kids are and seeing their pics makes me happy :) Glad you had such a wonderful trip.

Someone takes really good pictures -- is that DH? Pictures 16 and 18 look like they could win a photo contest. You look really, really good in all of the outfits Natalie. I can see the remixing and sticking to colors like white, red and navy. You look casual and very well dressed and comfortable all at the same time.

I was traveling from Tahoe on 4/13 -- that storm that closed the I-5 also closed the 88/89. So I feel your pain with the 13 hour journey!

  • sarah replied 8 years ago

Natalie, you did a stellar job of putting together your capsule! You look terrific in every shot, and it looks like you and your family had a fabulous time!

  • Zapotee replied 8 years ago

So much fun! Thank you for sharing. You looked very relaxed, yet put together, perfect!
Your little ones are so cute!

    Beautiful babies!!!!

Very nice! It looks like y'all had a lot of fun.

Thanks for the compliments about me & the family, Sveta, Diana, Harmonica, Alicat, Nancylee, Shannon, Rae, Helen, Jayne, Christieanne, MaryK, Mirp, Suz, Cheryl, Denise, Sarah, Zap, Jen, Kristin! I'm glad you enjoyed the pics!

Sveta, I never used to dress stylishly while traveling before so it was fun to try applying what I've learned at YLF to my travel clothes as well! It's really a different skill than creating single outfits!

Diana, the outfit in #6 is the same one as in #23, and also I had worn it with a red trench and shoes before I left in this post:
I could totally see you with the Milu tote, too bad you weren't able to find it. Maybe eBay?

Diana and Christieanne, glad the pics brought back your own happy memories! DH and I lived in San Diego our first year of marriage, so we have fond memories of that city too.

Rae, Diana, Suz, MaryK, Cheryl, thanks for noticing my mom's style! Funnily enough, in that picture I was a little worried I was the one dressing too young since the tee and Cons gives kind of a teenager vibe! Suz, my mom was initially wearing black wedge flip flops but my sister brought some sensible shoes for her (we always have to make sure she isn't wearing heels to everything!)

Denise, sorry you got stuck in the traffic too due to the snowstorm! Thanks for the compliments on the pics--DH is a great photographer and I was lucky he agreed to take pics of my outfits. Pics of the kids in 15-16, 18-19, and 33 are actually taken by me though! I used the SLR with auto settings--I guess I was just lucky to get some good shots.

  • Deborah replied 8 years ago

Natalie, you look so stylish on your holiday. The holiday capsule is my greatest challenge, so I am taking notes.

Thanks for sharing your holiday with us. Looks like you had a lovely time and your little ones are just too adorable.

BTW i adore that green sweater jacket.

  • Kyle replied 8 years ago

Such a joyful trip. Brings back sweet memories of a Disney extravaganza and a little boy besotted with Princess Jasmine! You look great from start to finish. I'm especially fond of you in crisp red, white and blue. You and your family are beautiful.
