WIW 4/5: Channeling Mom--black and white lace floral top and cobalt skinny jeans

This is weird, but I sort of feel like I'm channeling my mom in this outfit! This is totally something she would wear. I bought this top while shopping with my mom at Ann Taylor and she almost got the same one. She loves to wear colored skinny jeans too. I've been wearing the heck out of my new grey snakeskin studded wedge sneakers and matching pewter studded satchel, and added my gunmetal spiky bracelet as well. Even though my mom is 25 years older than me (she loves to shop at Forever 21!), I'm wondering if this outfit might be a little too young and trendy for me? LOL!
(I added the leather jacket to cover the muffin top, since I can barely squeeze into my old jeans).

Tahari black leather jacket
Ann Taylor black and white lace cutout floral top
Old Navy Rockstar cobalt skinny jeans
Skechers wedge sneakers
Michael Kors studded satchel
F21 bracelet

Where has your baby belly gone? It has just up and left, obviously! I can't believe how fast your body is snapping back. WOW.

Okay, your outfit! Very cute. Love the top and jacket combo, bright jeans, check! Cool kicks, check! Awesome bag, check! What's not to love? You are a cute, young mom. Live it up!

Love that top!! And I think it's sweet that you are channelling your mom -- and not feeling bad about that. I know sometimes it has been dicey. You look terrific, Natalie!

You are young and you look great in this. I think the pants are what give it the trendy feel? That's an easy fix if you want to go in a more, ahem, mature direction.

    I love that top.

You look so good and right on trend with those converse.

ETA: Congratulations on your baby, I have passed by one of your old posts with the baby and he's so cute. All the best for you and your family.

What a nice top. I love how you matched it with the sneakers and funky jeans, definitely gives it a young twist, and I would also love to see it dressed up with trousers or a pencil and blazer.  Good taste is in your genes.

You look just wonderful, happy, and bright.....and, oh! So stylish.

What a beautiful outfit Natalie.  You look super stylish and so slim, I would have never guessed you just had a baby.  And I do not think the outfit is matronly at all,
  • merwoman replied 10 years ago
You look smashing Natalie - and totally age appropriate. Like Claire I am amazed at how quickly you are returning to your pre-pregnancy figure!
  • Scarlet replied 10 years ago
I think this is a very fun and stylish outfit. If you feel uncomfortable then I would go for more sophisticated jewelry to balance out the youthfulness of the jeans and sneakers. I think you look great and your figure looks great too!

Too young - are you kidding? You rock that look!
  • Adelfa replied 10 years ago
I LOVE what you've done with the colors in this outfit. The gunmetal accessories look wonderful with the black and cobalt.

You look terrific, and it is double charming that you are channeling your mum.   I love that top!

    Thanks everyone!
Sona, yes the top is new. This is the top:
Ann Taylor Laser Cut Lace Ponte Top
and here was my K/R thread.

Claire, Glory, Merwoman, Scarlet, thanks for the compliment. It's only been a month now so I'm still carrying some excess baby weight (about 15 lb). The first 20 lb melted off, thankfully, but now I think I've stabilized so the rest will come off much more slowly. Most of my old jeans are still too tight, I barely squeezed into this pair but it's giving me some muffin top. I have so many jeans already, so I'm not sure if I should invest in a transition pair or just keep squeezing in and hope for the best, LOL.

Suz, Nicole, Ingunn, Tanya, thanks. I find it ironic that as I grow older I am starting to take an interest in fashion and to dress more like my mother, not because she dresses in a matronly fashion but quite the opposite. I still think she dresses younger and trendier and more bodycon than I do, which is part of the reason this outfit reminds me of her. For example, one of her favorite stores is bebe, which I never shop at because I feel like it's too young and "club wear" for me. I looked up the bebe target customer and the company description says, "While we attract a broad audience, our target customer is an 21 to 34-year-old woman who seeks current fashion trends to suit her lifestyle. The "bebe look" appeals to a hip, sexy, sophisticated, body-conscious woman who takes pride in her appearance. The bebe customer expects value in the form of current fashion and high quality at a competitive price." And she shops at Forever 21 for clothes (I mainly just get cheap jewelry there).

Pil and Scarlet, I do think it would be fun to try a more sophisticated/mature/work appropriate look with the top next time. But for a MOTG day this was fun too.

Celia, Runcarla, Kiwichick, Adelfa, thanks! I'm nearing 40 and (esp when getting up several times a night with three kids) sometimes I don't feel so young anymore, LOL! But it's good to know that I still can pull it off!

Natalie, personally I bought some bigger jeans. It was more comfortable and feels psychologically better not having your belly all squished up. You could pick some up from Gap or somewhere pretty cheaply. I think they have a 40% off at the moment, at least with an email code. And that even though I have tons of jeans.

KILLER, whether you enjoy channelling Mum or not!
  • goldenpig replied 10 years ago

Scarlet, that makes sense. I am now in between my maternity jeans and my old jeans so it makes sense to buy a transition pair.

Angie, thanks for the K rating! Certainly makes me feel better about following in my mom's footsteps! :)

Natalie, this is a great MOTG outfit.  You look wonderful.  Funny how we often feel that dressing like, or choosing garments that our mums might like or wear is a bad thing:)  Im guilty of it.  I tried on a sweater today and my first thought was 'mum would wear this colour'... I didn't buy it. ha ha.

We have seen your mum and she is a super stylish lady too.  It makes sense that you would like similar things at time as you both have an interest in fashion and know what looks good.
