WIW 5/13: Orphan to Outfit day 1--lace bomber (Angie copy)

Here's my first outfit for Karie's Orphans to Outfits challenge. I was rushing out the door to work so I did not have time to sit and think about this outfit. I bought the lace bomber that Angie has and wore so well in this outfit, and this is sort of a copy of her outfit with the lace bomber over a full skirt. But for some reason I am just not feeling like this outfit is "me". I'm finding this lace bomber so hard to style with my other tops and dresses, because most of them are patterned themselves and kind of clash with the lace pattern. Plus the silhouette of the bomber with its lack of waist definition makes me feel a bit frumpy. Help, please analyze what went wrong with this outfit, and I'd love suggestions on how to wear this bomber because it still feels like an orphan to me. I only wore the jacket for a few minutes to go to work and then took it off inside (basically wore #2), because I wasn't sure if it looked professional enough (plus it was hot today).
Thanks for your comments and suggestions!

(psssst.... I've found that I do not like this bomber shape worn over a shirt collar. I like it over a crew neck. In your case it can be any flat neckline).

Interesting because I thought the same thing - this is not "you".  And yet each piece is you, individually.  I think the structured shirt and flowy skirt are a little too different somehow.  And the jacket seems too long.  I'd love to see it with your floral skinnies and a white T instead!

I think what Angie says makes a lot of sense. But I really sympathize. I like bombers in theory, but always feel frumpy in them, too, so I have not bought the trend. I love your skirt and you are looking so slender!

I do prefer this outfit without the bomber. I would try Angie's suggestion and wear it with a flat neckline. I agree with Una, skinnies and a white T would be perfect!

I think Angie is right about the shirt collar maybe being an issue, but I love the lace bomber on you. Play with it some more. What about over a sheath dress? With white jeans?

LOVE that skirt on you BTW!

Angie, thanks, you're right about the neckline not working with collared shirts. I don't really have any solid color crew neck shirts--perhaps that's why I am having so much trouble with this jacket. I did try it with my blouson crew neck banded bottom black and white wavy stripe blouse, but the bomber and volume on volume was just too much for me, plus the pattern clashed with the jacket.

Una, yes, I immediately thought of pairing this with the floral pants and tried it here, but I should try it with a plain white T instead. Funny how each of the pieces can be my style, but not when they are combined into a silhouette that is not my style. I am having a lot of trouble getting used to the slouchy/waist surrender/volume all over trends.

Thanks Suz, Karie and Shannon. White jeans is a good idea. I thought this would go well over dresses, but since most of my dresses are patterned it seems too busy over the dresses. I guess that's why most of my jackets are solid colors, because my base layers are all patterned. Hmm, interesting.

Oh, I love it with the skinnies.  And that makes me think it would work with a pencil skirt.

Natalie, I bought this same jacket and when it came I felt so awful in it I didn't even try to make it work, just sent it right back. I know you say you are an apple (though I don't see it) and I am too. Maybe that's it? I don't know! See you you feel in it as you experiment with all of the great suggestions.

I commented on Today's orphan thread after your post. Do you think it might Orkney with your polka dots ?

I like the jacket with the skirt.  I think Angie nailed it with her comment about the blouse, that is the way to improve it.  But overall, I am preferring the jacket with pants on you.

I like the idea to wear simple pieces with no frills (collars, patterns, cowlnecks, etc) so that the jacket is the star.  And it looks made for a pairing with skirts or dresses since it is not too long.

Interesting, Natalie. This jacket seems longer on you than on Angie to me, i.e. it doesn't end at the waist. I'm thinking a pencil skirt, something über structured to balance...

Well, even if you don't put this jacket onto rotation, you've learned a few things about your current wardrobe and identified some holes. Shopping!

Love the idea of flral oants and a white tee or a tee that picks out a color from the pant. Also echo white jeans with white top as a base.
