WIW 5/14 (and K/R): Kate Spade Topliner trench and matching floral bag

YLF'ers, I have been a very naughty SYB'er! As you know I have the Kate Spade black & white Japanese floral Austin sheath dress that I got last month at 45% off. Well, I found out the matching Melinda handbag and Topliner trench (the one that Girl X and Zapotee have) are on sale for 50% off, and I could not resist! I am in matchy matchy heaven with the black and white dress, bag in reverse print, and trench with matching Japanese floral liner (it's a Florence Broadhurst vintage print). I bought the bag at my local Kate Spade but they did not have the trench so I drove an hour to the nearest one that had ones to try on (I wasn't sure what size I would need). I ended up in a size 6 (I am normally size 4-6 in most things, but have one size 8 KS dress). It's a bit snug at the top when fully buttoned (but I can still move my arms comfortably), but the 8 was definitely too baggy. It's OK though since I probably will not be layering bulky sweaters underneath. I really like the fit and flare silhouette and the contrast trim. It feels very ladylike to me, unlike most standard trenches which are somewhat unisex/masculine looking to me. I have been lusting after Kate Middleton's ruffled hem Burberry trench ever since I saw it, but Burberry prices are not something I want to pay right now (plus that style sold out in a day, apparently, and I also missed getting the cheap knockoff). Even at half off the Kate Spade is expensive for me, but I think I'd get a lot of use out of it and it goes well with my style.

The only concern I have is the color. Yes, it is beige. I have been so worried that you won't like it on me and will say it's "soul-sucking beige". I know Asians aren't supposed to wear beige (or at least it's very tricky with our skin color). I would have preferred if the coat were cream. But it has a yellowish undertone (rather than grey) to the beige, so that's supposed to be good if I'm a warm toned Deep Autumn, right? I tried to take several pics in different kinds of lighting so you can get an idea, but it's tough to photograph the true color. Also, I'm hoping you won't say it's too voluminous/overwhelming on my frame. I do also have a cream and black cropped trench jacket from WHBM, but I just love the drama of a long trench coat! I really am curious (and nervous) of what you will think of this coat on me!

And GirlX and Zap--can't wait to see more pics of you in your trenches so I can get more inspiration!

The handbag is vinyl (so it's vegan for those who are looking for such a bag), and has a cool neon orange lining. I really like the structured satchel shape.

I am so happy I found these two pieces to complete my "set"! I wore 1-6 to work (but kept the tags on the coat). So what do you think--are these keepers? They were 50% off and final sale, so if you really hate the coat I would have to either beg Kate Spade to take it back for store credit (I've done that once before but it's not guaranteed) or sell it on eBay. Nervously awaiting your verdict!

I like it. Looks fine outside in natural light.

Natalie, you are adorable in your matchy matchy outfit! I actually really like the trench and think it works because of the black trim. I would certainly keep it!

    You crazy woman!!!
    I LOVE
    (((Zap just died)))
ETA: What size did you get? GX and I went for a super tailored fit. Yours look a little looser but still fab.

  • goldenpig replied 11 years ago

Zap, where are your pics? I've been dying to see your WIW pics and you hid the pic in your other thread.

I got a size 6. They did not have a size 4 but I think my arms and shoulders would have been too restricted in the 4. As it is, the 6 feels a tiny bit snug around the torso (not restrictive, but snug). Maybe my arms are skinny but my shoulders/torso are broader?

  • replied 11 years ago

I will unhide now.... I will link in a minute.
Mine is a 6 too but hey, I have very little room for layering. I bought the trench as a dressy, evening item. I'm not planning to wear it for everyday so I don't need layering room.
    Here it is:

My vote, a big fat KEEP....

Wow, you are so happy about this! I say seek your joy.

I love the purse even without the matchy-matchy!

Natalie, you are so cute! I forgot all about your SSB worries until the end of the pictures. It really looks like a pretty cream to me, and your skin looks beautifully rosy in it! Love the matching bag, too. How fun. :)

  • Echo replied 11 years ago

I love, love, LOVE these items! It is beyond cute how the trench lining matches the dress and matches the handbag! Maybe not all together, but what an unexpected suprise to have your coat lining match your bag. I think the coat is great on you, and if you ever are worried about how the beige looks next to your face, the red underneath or a scarf at the neck will completely change the look (although I do not think the coat is unflattering by itself). And those are the cutest shoes, too, in #8 - #11.

  • Girl X replied 11 years ago

Lovely! I think the colour/tone of the trench works wonderfully with your skin tone, not soul sucking at all, you look vibrant!

  • christieanne replied 11 years ago

That is the outfit of your matchy matchy dreams indeed!! I have to say YAY even though all together it may be a bit extreme for me lol.
I do love how you styled it all independently though.

Not soul sucking beige but if it worries you, this is the chance to pull out the makeup and pop a teeny color on cheeks and lips.

It looks great and you can always go back to SYB next month.

  • Transcona Shannon replied 11 years ago

I don't find this to be SSB at all - more towards the cream colour palette. It is indeed matchy-matchy heaven!

  • CocoLion replied 11 years ago

    Keep. EVERYTHING!

  • velvetychocolate replied 11 years ago

I don't see 'soul-sucking beige' at all either - beautiful coat on you!

  • goldenpig replied 11 years ago

Wowee! Thanks everyone! I'm so glad you guys like the trench on me! What a relief! I was worried I had made an expensive mistake.

Thanks for putting your pic back up, Zap. Have you worn it out IRL yet? What size clothes are you normally? Are we the same size? (I'm 130 lb 5'5" size 4-6). Maybe I should/could have squeezed into a 4 for a sleeker look, but then maybe I might not be able to move my arms. Now I remember why I was so worried about soul sucking beige--in your thread Angie said that she tried the trench on and it was SSB on her.

I found GirlX's thread with her pics:
    http://youlookfab.com/welookfa.....-love-love
In her pics the trench looks very white/cream. To me the trench has a definite yellowish beige cast.

  • Kiwichik replied 11 years ago

Oh please, please, keep. I think the trench looks fine with your skin colour and the dress and matching bag are divine.

  • Jjsloane replied 11 years ago

If it makes you happy and doesn't send your DH into a rage go for it. I would be curious to see the smaller size on you after comparing the GirlX and Zap versions, but it may just be the body type difference (we apples and the double breasted struggle some don't we?) Possibly you could move the buttons a little to snug it up a bit at the top? It looks perfect from the side and no worries on the color for you. It totally works with your style.

  • replied 11 years ago

No, I don't think we are the same size. I'm 5"8", about 150 ish and size 6-8. Much bigger! I am more of an pear with a high hip. but my frame is rather small and only a B cup. I think that is why I fit on the 6, plus I think I generally buy my clothes much more fitted than yours. I guess we have proven that I look weird in anything not tailored :(
Also, as Girl X explained to me, I think the fact that there are no shoulder seams, makes the sizing pretty flexible and as I said, I have very little layering room. I could accommodate a sweater, but not a blazer. I had to have gone up to an 8, for me to do that. I ordered and compared both sizes. I was much happier with the 6 on me.I tend to look better in sharp, ultra tailored garments.
I do not mean to add confusion, the fit is looser but still really, really nice.

I love everything! I admit this all makes me nervous about your hubby's reaction. Will he have a stroke?

  • goldenpig replied 11 years ago

Zap, hmmm, now you have me wondering if I should have gotten a 4. The SA's were telling me to size up because everyone was complaining the shoulders were too tight. They didn't have a 4 to try. I'm not sure where I could find one because the local KS shipped theirs to outlet. I suppose I could try ordering a 4 as well, but it's final sale so it would be really tough to return. I still think with my apple and broad torso (I'm 32DD and waist 31) that I should probably stick to a 6 to give my chest/belly some room to breathe.

Haha JJ and Alicat, I'll tell you a funny story...just the other day we were at the park and DH is shooting baskets (he's been practicing a lot) and he hands me the ball and said, "Let's make a bet--if you can make this shot (from the free throw line) in one try, what do you want?" And I said "500 bucks!" He said, "Deal." (Because he didn't think I would make it--I am not good at basketball and don't practice like him). And I threw the ball and sank the shot! Swish! Just the exact amount to cover the coat and bag! So he is not allowed to complain!

  • ironkurtin replied 11 years ago

Take it to a good tailor! They can resolve any fit concerns *like magic.*

  • Jonesy replied 11 years ago

The coat is fab! Ditto the dress and bag! Maybe you and hubby should play weekly games of horse on the basketball court :).

  • replied 11 years ago

OMG gosh, no, don't order the 4. I think you will be more comfortable in this size. I am one to NEVER oversize coats since I have a very, very narrow torso. I am starting to think I did a disservice by bringing it up. Enjoy it as is, it is beautiful.

  • rae replied 11 years ago

OMG, I love the basketball story! Heh heh heh!

I really love your items, too. I think that between the black trim and the true black/white patter peeking out, you are set. The bag is my favorite of all... such a gorgeous graphic b/w option!

  • replied 11 years ago

Ha ha, that is an awesome story, Natalie! Good for you!

  • fauxpas replied 11 years ago

Just checking out the Kate Spade "surprise" sale and you are adding to the problem! Everything darling---great choices---perfect for you. How fun!

  • replied 11 years ago

Love your story. I just got me an Ipad on a bet I made with my beloved. It was something silly over remembering the last name of a gentleman we deal with. I won!

  • Fruitful replied 11 years ago

Natalie, this coat is so you it's insane. A very smart (and swoonworthy) purchase!

  • Kari replied 11 years ago

To me this looks more like a flattering off-white, very far from "soul sucking" (to me the soul-sucking variety is more like khaki.) I LOVE that trench, but especially with the outfit with the All Black pumps, jeans, and the striped tee!

  • goldenpig replied 11 years ago

Thanks everyone for the input! I checked with Angie on the fit and color as well. Tags are coming off! Woo hoo!

  • cheryl replied 11 years ago

Natalie, you look like a dream in this trench. It is so flattering. I love the matchy matchy with the dress and bag, awesome. I also really love the shoes in the first couple of pics. I would like them for dancing, lol.
