WIW 6/2 Taking a stand against gun violence (with my food baby)

I wore orange today to take a stand against gun violence on National Gun Violence Awareness Day. Please make it stop!

Felt great in this outfit all day. Until my coworker pulled me aside to ask me if I was pregnant. I nearly bit his head off. WTF. Not again! Damn food baby! OK, yes he is right, if I don't stand up straight and suck it in, I do look pregnant. (5/6) I do work out regularly, but my belly has birthed three babies and the food baby is not going away anytime soon. Maybe not ever. Heck, even Jennifer Garner has one.

I felt bad and initially felt like skipping dinner. But I decided I'm not going to starve myself. This is embarrassing to post these pics, but I'm going to take a stand with my food baby and 1) show you that I don't have a perfect bikini body and 2) it's OK--life goes on. And 3) there are many more important things to worry about (like gun violence!). And 4) please do not ask a woman if she is pregnant unless she has a baby dangling between her legs! Gah!

Trouve navy leather jacket, orange T and striped skirt, Paul Green Cayannes (also wore the Michael Kors tangerine loafers--which one do you like better?), Long champ bag, Tommy Bahama necklace, Stella and Dot bracelet

Bright orange and leather make a good combo for taking a stand in ladylike fashion.
I have a preference for the loafers but I'm unsure why (because they're low vamped and show more legs or because they match the top ?)

  • unfrumped replied 7 years ago

Well, I think you look great.
I have to fight with keeping up ab muscle tone and the best thing I've found is 5-Day Abs. I have to keep renewing my attack on lower abs especially, and this program taught me several pretty simple exercises but that work on all parts and give results pretty quickly . Whenever I get back into using them I look and feel much better , but if I stop, poochy returns!

  • Maneera replied 7 years ago

    Oh damn, Natalie. This again?!

But I SO LOVE your attitude. Yes, life goes on despite the pooch. And you do look stunning despite the fact that you don't have a flat belly. I have a food baby very similar to yours these days....so I know it's a little hard to 'hide' it. It gets worse somedays when I'm suffering a gastritis attack.

Your colleague definitely needs a sharp rap under his ear! Good to know you didn't starve yourself...you'll lose away whatever muscle mass you have. Just keep up with your workouts and don't think more on the issue.

Kudos to you for taking a stand against gun violence!

  • replied 7 years ago

Someone needs to make your sentence #4 into a statement tee. When will people learn? You work in the medical profession so your colleague should know better.

I absolutely *love* this striped skirt! Your whole outfit is fab--black and orange are striking together, and the touch of white adds such freshness. And way to go on taking a stand on this important issue. I didn't know that orange is the colour for Nat'l Gun Violence awareness.

  • Helena replied 7 years ago

Jennifer Garner's response to the tummy pooch question as beyond brilliant! You look terrific and what a great cause.

  • replied 7 years ago

Drop kick to the idiot. Gah is right. Because I hope it doesn't keep you from wearing this outfit, which I LOVE. I love the skirt and covet the jacket. Sure, I get it if you pull up your shirt that your belly is not concave, but screw it. You look great and are healthy and I really love that skirt.

I support the cause, but don't think I have a single orange item in my closet to rock.

  • Aquamarine replied 7 years ago

People are idiots. You look awesome.

  • Mochi replied 7 years ago

You look fantastic. IMHO one of your best looks ever. And people....jeez, what are they thinking? Even if you *were* pregnant, or trying to be, it'd be none of their business! No excuses.

  • Ledonna N. replied 7 years ago

You always look brilliant like a ray of sunshine on a cloudy day. I really do love this outfit. The colors the shape the jacket and the booties. Thank you for sharing pictures even if uncomfortable.

I don't know why people do that even if well meaning. Your body has birthed 3 healthy beautiful children. You are a wonderful light and your beautiful and strong body gives testament to that light and joy.

I did not know it was gun violence day. In Chicago we are overwhelmed with it. I stand in solidarity.

Natalie, your posts always brighten my day 'cos you always look amazing. Ignore stupid comments and carry on looking fab regardless. I adore the colour scheme here. So vibrant! I think I have a minor preference for the loafers with your skirt as I love the matchy vibe and your jacket is gorgeous.

  • Peri replied 7 years ago

I look like this and I haven't had 3 kids...or any kids. You have something brilliant to show for it and your co-worker, well, let's say he needed the education.

  • JAileen replied 7 years ago

Fab outfit! I love your posts. I love seeing your matchy matchiness and the attention to detail. Although I "might" look pregnant, no one ever asks me. Probably because of my grey hair! I didn't know about orange for gun violence. We have a shooting every day it seems.

  • Angie replied 7 years ago

(What's WRONG with these people? It should be illegal to ask if you're pregnant).

Natalie, this is a Killer outfit and you look darling as always. I like both sets of shoes with the outfit.

  • replied 7 years ago

I think the pooch is very cute, and should be celebrated for its part in giving 3 beautiful children life.  Just give it a pat and carry on, you're fabulous and lovely.

  • kellygirl replied 7 years ago

Love this outfit! Thanks for bringing this to my attention. I must live under a rock. And, your co worker is a dolt.

  • Jaime replied 7 years ago

You look fantastic and the orange against gun violence is even more fantastic. As another mother of 3, two of which came out of the same time after a very big pregnancy, my abs are permanently pregnancy shaped. Luckily no one asks a grey haired woman whether she is pregnant or things might get pretty ugly! Your attitude is wonderful; your coworker's tact is nonexistent.

  • Suz replied 7 years ago

Where do people get the idea that it is okay to comment on women's bodies this way? Sheesh!!!!

But I love your attitude and your outfit. You rock!

  • texstyle replied 7 years ago

Can you just imagine if we asked men with a little tummy if they were pregnant?

  • kimlee replied 7 years ago

Natalie, I would like to have a few minutes alone with that guy - I would tell him a thing or two. I think you look amazing.

  • catherine replied 7 years ago

You make that outfit look awesome. A comment on your perfectly healthy and attractive body is inappropriate and perhaps deserves no notice.
I also participated in the wearing of the orange but am near despair that things will improve.

  • replied 7 years ago

Orange is sure your colour - what a great outfit . I love it.  I have the same food baby - although I have only given birth once.  But with permanently separated abdominal muscles, I can only have a flat stomach when I am very, very thin.  People are stupid - period.  You should have asked him or her if indeed he/she was pregnant !

  • AviaMariah replied 7 years ago

WHAT IS WRONG WITH PEOPLE????  But solidarity... I have been battling the same thing.  In fact, I almost took a pregnancy test last night because I looked pregnant to myself.  How that 7 pounds I gained knows how to go straight to my tummy and thighs I'll never know.  Especially when the girls could use it a lot more.  But I digress.... I love your outfit.  If you come up with any tricks to maintain better posture let me know.  I used to have this thing that kind of looked like a backwards bra that clipped in the front and forced the shoulder back.  I might have to look into one again.

ETA: this is what I used to have.  It wasn't the most comfortable thing to wear though.  http://www.jcpenney.com/venus-.....23&am

  • marianna replied 7 years ago

Ugh... I always fear the question, especially when I wear loose tops. I have a large belly and I'm at that age where people are starting to wonder. Not sure how I'd react if someone asked me! I'd probably say: "No, just fat." ;)

Anyway, you do a great job dressing for your body. I love this outfit. I really like it with the loafers. Looks great!

  • Karie replied 7 years ago

You look fantastic! I have a food baby too, and not as a result of having real babies, it's just the way I'm built. I also exercise every day, and it just doesn't go away. Sometimes people just act like idiots.

  • rachylou replied 7 years ago

Yes. I was born with the food baby. But honestly, how divorced from nature/reality are people? Women are round. This is why people get obsessed with the Venus of Willendorf and will go on about the little ancient figurine.

Don't make me talk about the girl doing a PhD on food deserts who thought a trap and release program for skunks was a brilliant idea. How can you do a PhD in food deserts and not learn anything about the reality of growing crops and distribution? Animals and plants? I'm, like, ok - I'll trap them and YOU release them.

  • Barbara Diane replied 7 years ago

Love the outfit. People are idiots. Actually they are uneducated. No one told them not to ask. Actually, I wasn't taught until I was pregnant and someone at a maternity store explained that even if someone looked 9 months pregnant they asked "who are you shopping for?". Because some women shopped there because they had cancer and their bellies were enlarged, and some for other reasons.
And the reverse can happen too. I was very pregnant and wearing a trapeze style top. The new refrigerator came and when they moved out the old one it was very dirty underneath. I said something and so I got down on my hands and knees and got the major stuff off the floor. Couldn't believe they didn't offer given how very very pregnant I was. Anyway, afterwards I said something about being pregnant and they were stunned. I said something about the top and they said Madonna or someone was wearing the same style and she wasn't pregnant.

And no, you don't look pregnant.

  • Roxanna replied 7 years ago

Natalie, you are BRAVE and HONEST and AWESOME. Why it is hard to talk about women not having perfect 21 year old bodies after having birthed kids is beyond me. You shouldn't have to be brave! This should be the norm!

You are working out and keeping healthy and you look awesome. And as you said, there are many more important things to worry about in this world. Rock on.

  • Firecracker (Sharan) replied 7 years ago

You look amazing, Natalie. What a beautiful outfit on you. I love the colors, the striped skirt that makes you look so tall, and the beautiful leather jacket you chose as a topper. I think the heels and the loafers both look fantastic. I lover your message here, too--thank you!
Also, kudos for taking a stand against gun violence.

  • texstyle replied 7 years ago

Came back because I wanted to say that this is a great outfit on you Natalie - you wear these vibrant colors so well, very inspiring!

  • Gail replied 7 years ago

I have had three kids and my belly can be your twin ! You look fab in your bright outfit and the guy that said that to you needs some social skills training !

  • Nebraskim replied 7 years ago

There's an essay going around Facebook right now that says "the perfect bikini body is your body." Your outfit looks great on you. Shame on the coworker for asking that question, BTW.

  • RobinF replied 7 years ago

I know it isn't funny, but they way you wrote this made me laugh. I think you look great, don't let ignorant people make you feel bad.

  • Aida replied 7 years ago

Natalie you look fab as always! People just don't know any better sometimes, eh? I'm glad you ate your dinner -- you've got three lovely little kiddos who need their strong mama! As a captain of Team Orange I totally adore your skirt. I like both shoes with the outfit but prefer the loafers because it has a more easy-breezy nonchalant sort of vibe to it compared to the heeled sandals. Do you have any taupe jackets? I think the same outfit with the sandals and swapped to taupe jacket would be just as fabulous looking.

  • UmmLila (Lisa) replied 7 years ago

Thank you for taking a stand against gun violence and for making orange look gorgeous.

  • catgirl replied 7 years ago

I went to a baby shower and someone asked me if I was pregnant - I told them I'm the opposite of pregnant!

Anyway you look marvelous and people are idiots.

  • Echo replied 7 years ago

Natalie, you have always been one of my style inspirations, and you still are. People are idiots, and I have ALWAYS agreed that no one should ever ask if a woman is pregnant unless they see a baby crowning! I have been asked the same question enough times to just shake my head. I was once asked if I was pregnant when I was a teenaged size 2 wearing a trapeze top! My only consolation now is that if I let the grey overtake the front of my hair, no one will ask anymore!

I think your outfit is fab, and I applaud you taking a stance against gun violence!

  • Runcarla replied 7 years ago

*Sigh*. You look great, and I can't believe this guy.

  • tulle replied 7 years ago

Oh my gosh, I think you look divine in this outfit, and I see no evidence of any "food baby"!  I suspect that your clueless colleague was reacting to the (fashionable) looseness of the orange top, not your body. And kudos to you for taking a public stand against the insanity of gun violence and availability in our country.  Have you seen Katie Couric's documentary on the subject?  Excellent, I thought.  Please wear this outfit again--it's too good to leave at home!

  • Sally replied 7 years ago

You look fabulous...I love the colours and the outfit looks great on you. I don't know know why people ask this? I have always had a stomach that poked out...I'm just built that way and now I've had a c section..I have a little flap...sorry probably too much information ..but why do people expect women to have flat tummies and why do they comment?

  • Momo replied 7 years ago

Firstly awesome outfit. The orange is fantastic on you.
Secondly.. Ugh! I so wish people wouldn't ask that question. it is potentially very rude and I think there is also something more there about societal expectations of women . Must be beautiful and always have a flat belly unless you are pregnant.
And lastly. Kudos to you for posting the last pic. Inspiring.

  • lyn67 replied 7 years ago

Gah, this is a great outfit, I haev my version of this one, with a shorter skirt-but I can so relate...Am 48, and I've got the same comment from my FIL this weekend:-( ...but seems rather right as  I do  not only  have  a food baby but unfortunately sometimes a really bad posture (and he has Alzheimers), too...
