WIW 6/20: Red rose swing dress and denim, yee haw!

Continuing my exploration of the hidden recesses of my closet, here is a red rose swing dress that I bought off eBay last December when I was looking for a costume to wear to a Wild West holiday party at work. I was going to wear it with a red crinoline underneath: http://youlookfab.com/welookfa.....iday-party. I ended up going with a saloon girl look instead (http://goldenpig.lookfab.com/p.....aloon-girl) and purging the crinoline, but this dress and another cherry-print dress were non-returnable since they were from eBay. I bought them off eBay because I couldn't find this sort of style online or in stores, but now I know better than to buy stuff off eBay unless I'm absolutely sure I want it.

Anyhow, thought I'd see if this would still be appropriate to wear as a non-costume summer dress (I have the day off from work today so this is a MOTG outfit). I paired it with an AE cropped faded denim jacket and flat nude Naturalizer sandals and a casual turquoise necklace and my JWT straw purse. Does it look OK or do I still look like a cowgirl even without boots on? Is it too low cut in the front with the halter style (I'm wearing a strapless bra)? Keep or toss on the dress? Thanks for looking and commenting!

What? You don't look anything like a cowgirl. You look very pretty in this dress. I particularly like it with the denim. I say keep!

This doesn't say "Yee-haw" to me but looks like a great little summer dress. The bright color keeps it from looking too sweet. Actually it looks very flattering. The faded denim jacket is a perfect topper. Keep, unless you aren't comfortable wearing it. It seems perfect for summer MOTG stuff.

LOVE this dress! This is a fantastic outfit and one I would wear in a second. I don't see any cowgirl (unless you added cowboy boots and a big ol' Stetson!). Fab summer MOTG dress IMO.

I don't think this looks costume-y at all, Natalie. I love this dress on you, it's feminine and Summer-y and happy. Love it with the faded denim jacket and your beautiful sandals too.

Natalie, I think you inadvertently found the perfect MOTG dress style for you! It is not western to my eye but a ladylike, 50s-retro with the flared skirt. It looks amazing with the light wash denim jacket, the fabrication keep it from feeling too dressy, and it looks like you could run after the kiddos in that without a hitch.

I like it a lot! It is fit and flare and so darn cute with that denim jacket!

I agree with what Shannon and Rae said! I see a cute retro dress, perhaps the sweetness is making you think of something southern? Unless you go, ahhem, whole hog and add cowboy boots and hat I think rather than being cowgirlish this is a very nice MOTG dress :) Especially liking it with the faded denim jacket.

The dress is darling & many style bloggers are wearing this fit & flare style calling it vintage. You got lucky - very on trend find from your closet!

Look great and seems like a perfect dress for MOTG days.

  • annagybe replied 11 years ago

    It's cute!

  • Diana replied 11 years ago

Pretty! I agree with Rae - much more retro than cowgirl. The style seems great for summery MOTG things to me!

  • Kiwichik replied 11 years ago

Yes definitely retro in a good and very flattering way - love how you've styled this.

  • Angie replied 11 years ago

    Totally fab! No cowgirls.

  • MsMary replied 11 years ago

Super cute and not at all cowgirly!

  • Tanya replied 11 years ago

Very pretty dress! Love it with the denim jacket.

  • Jamie replied 11 years ago

Very pretty on you!! I've seen plenty attempts at the cowgirl look here in Texas (some of the real thing too), and this is nowhere close to that. Not even borderline. It looks very ladylike and seems to fit the bill for a MOTG outfit!

I think it is a perfect summer dress and styles like this with denim jacket it is a real winner!
This is what I call real ShopYourCloset!:-)

Agree with Rae! Is see no cowgirls, just a 1950 glam girl :) Love this, you must keep and you must wear.

  • jen replied 11 years ago

You look as gorgeous as Shannon does in her blue dress and denim jacket!

  • goldenpig replied 11 years ago

Thanks everyone! I'm glad you like the dress. It does look kind of 50's retro which is why I liked it. For the full Western getup with crinoline and boot and hat you can click on the first link in my OP.

The only unforseen problem with wearing this dress for MOTG is that it was very windy at the park. I had to keep a hold of my skirt the whole time to keep it from giving everyone an eyeful! Next time I will remember to always wear leggings under dresses for MOTG!

    Love this!

  • harmonica replied 11 years ago

like Rae said. LOVE, LOVE, LOVE! Absolutely fab! And you can dress it up with heels, clutch and jewelery too. And wavy hair (if you find the time to do it;-) )
