WIW 8/19 BR Mad Men dress and impractical accessories

I wore this Banana Republic Mad Men dress to work and got so many compliments on it. Pretty much everyone I saw--nurses, patients, etc. said they loved it, including older men who I wouldn't think would care about fashion as much. Even the Nordstrom SA when I went to return something asked me where I got it. I think people really loved the 60's print.

#1/2 is how I would have liked to wear it, with my ink blue snake pumps, but the heel is just too high to be practical for a full work day. Plus the heel is too spiky so I didn't feel as stable and was worried I would trip (I prefer sturdier chunkier heels). So I wore my Easy Spirit nude Mary Jane pumps instead. These are so old (at least 15 yrs) and chipped/peeling on the front and heel (8). I really need to replace them but they are so comfy, I can wear them all day even when on call so I keep and wear them a lot. I would love to find some replacement nude pumps so I can retire these, but only if they are as comfy as my current ones. And I don't know what to do with these blue snake pumps. I really should purge them, but irrationally I want to wait until I find a replacement ink blue snake Mary Jane pump with a lower chunkier heel. Which is a tall order! So in the meantime these pretty blue pumps are sitting on my shelf (I tell myself I am keeping them for date nights, which are few and far between).

I'm wearing the matching green and navy BR Mad Men bracelet and I found this matching green and blue Mad Men clutch on eBay (4/5). It goes with the dress exactly (even has the same print in the lining). Of course I just had to get it! But I always carry so much stuff (wallet, phone, keys, lipstick, pen, papers, candy, camera) that I can never fit it all in to a clutch. I should stop buying clutches (I have a burgundy one that I never use, and ended up buying a burgundy satchel instead). Clutches look pretty, but are so impractical because they don't hold anything! So I ended up using my Jason Wu for Target straw purse with navy trim (6, forgot to get a pic with the dress). It bookends the nude pumps, but it's a cheap purse so it is starting to fray a little. I am thinking of buying a Kate Spade satchel in green and navy (7). Initially I saw it on sale at the Kate Spade website,  but I didn't get it because I was worried the colors wouldn't be an exact match so I went for the matching BR purse. But now I regret it--I should have gone for the bigger size purse even if it's not an exact color match. Now it's gone from the Kate Spade site, so I'd have to get it on eBay and it's a little more expensive (I'm sure they bought them on sale and are marking them up for a profit). I know I am being silly but you know how it is sometimes when you get an idea in your head and can't let go! Matchy Matchy me really wants shoes and a purse to match this dress that are practical! (If you happen to see any comfy nude or blue snake pumps, let me know!) Thanks for your comments!

I love your matchy-matchiness! I do think you need to replace those poor nude shoes though, they look tired and old. I get you on the comfiness factor though.

Gorgeous! Love those navy shoes but nude shoes were a good option too!

Gorgeous dress! I love that the lining of your purse matches, it's like "hidden fun"  Hah!  Loving it with the navy pumps, but the nude ones work really well too.

I like the matchiness with the ALLGO concept.
Got a kick out of the matching purse lining.
In the meantime, get SoBo fabric/craft glue. I always keep this stuff around.
Put a little where the shoe material has peeled up. Wait a minute for it to get a little tacky/set. It's not an instant dry so it gives you time to play around if you want to correct something. Take tweezers to pull out the flap of the material and then press it in.

That dress looks awesome on you. I love the matchy matchy.

Fabulous dress and I love the matchy-matchyness.

You look great in that dress!  I get you on the matchy-matchy purse but I usually avoid clutches for the same reasons you've stated.  I love the blue pumps, and although the nude shoes look good with the dress, they definitely need some repairs.  I hope you're able to find something as comfortable.

I almost bought that dress because I love the colors and the print!  I sort of wish I had but at the time I was worried that everyone would see it and know it was the BR Mad Men dress, which was evidently an irrational fear!

It looks great on you, and I agree that the navy pumps look better but you need comfort!

I absolutely ADORE you in this dress Natalie!

So glad you kept the dress, I remembe some post-partum doubt about it, but it's totally you and totally fab!

Love the dress. I didn't like the flesh tone shoes with this dress.
I carry a purse within a purse  (satchel) to work. Why don't you try that and you can use all of your lovely clutches. In the smaller purse I put keys, cell phone, and small wallet.

Oh my heavens, no wonder you got compliments! That dress is absolutely STUNNING on you, Natalie!! Wear and wear and wear and wear.

I love the idea of carrying the clutch inside a bigger bag.

    The lining is so fun!

I wish I had suggestions about the shoes. The blue ones are absolutely gorgeous. But you need comfy ones like the nude. Maybe start a thread and see if someone can recommend a similar style for your narrow foot?

That dress is stunning!  I can see why you got compliments.  And I just have to say that you look so great.  I would never guess that you had a baby not long ago.

I love you in that dress, but you really cannot wear those nude shoes anymore.
If you really want comfort I go to Clark's. If you can find your size in these I've been thinking of trying them myself:

My comfiest nude pumps are Ted Baker (but they are 8 hours and at 8.5 hours my feet start to hurt) Also I sent a pair back because the nude was a bit pink for me (so definitely for you)

Blue shoes are harder. Searching forever and no luck here.

Green and Blue is such a refreshing combination, and the dress is uber-flattering on you!

I search for slightly wide shoes, so I'm afraid my nude pump suggestions won't be helpful.  Good luck!

  • catgirl replied 10 years ago

That dress is mad fab on you!  I tried it on too, and it looked shamefully bad on me.  ROCK IT!

  • Deborah replied 10 years ago

I think that is my favourite of your dresses Natalie:). Sometimes I put my clutch in my my larger handbag for traveling to and from work and then just carry the clutch when I am on appointments, lunch etc.

  • rachylou replied 10 years ago

I like the nude shoe combination best. What a lovely look!

  • replied 10 years ago

Love all your matchy-ness.  Too bad about the blue shoes. My goodness it looks like your nude shoes have gotten a lot of wear!  I think the Kate Spade would be a great replacement.

  • Kari replied 10 years ago

That dress makes me happy whenever I see you in it.  I wish I'd snapped it up!

Total thumbs up on the KS handbag - gorgeous colors!  My beloved KS mustard bag is a pretty similar cut, and it's surprisingly roomy inside, but not heavy and with that LOVELY structure that their bags are known for.

No matter what purse/handbag you get and whether or not you can find a replacement for those ink blue snake shoes (that hopefully have a lower heel and are more comfortable ) - this dress on you is in the top ten of my all-time favourite Goldenpig outfits. It might even be in the top *three*. It's that good - so fantastic on you that I could scream - and then maybe I might faint for a little while afterward. I might even have to be revived with some sort of fabulous, home-baked cake or something.

That dress is AMAZING on you. Or rather - it's you who makes the dress look fantastic. You'll get the right purse/handbag and the right shoes eventually - but the thing is - this particular dress on you is incredible - definitely in the top ten, and maybe even top three. The shoes and handbag will sort themselves out.

You are beautiful in that dress, and I love the matchy-matchiness to bits. Too bad about the shoes, they are gorgeous. I hear you about clutches, it's the same for me, too. I need to be able to bring my iPad and phone, keys, wallet and an extra cardi/scarf these days. I hope you'll find a new pair of nude or blue hoes that fits the bill. Have you looked at the Clarks' website? They often have these styles with a sturdier heel.
