WIW 9/20: History repeating (aka I've turned into my mother!)

I got this hot pink and neon orange Muse shift dress from Zulily (final sale so no K/R). I wore it today and I realized that I have turned into my mother! This dress reminds me of the bright and boldly patterned mini shift dresses that my mom used to wear when I was a baby (see 4-5). And now, 40 years later, I'm wearing the same dress! What do you think--groovy or garish? Is it au courant, or avocado refrigerator/harvest gold sofa/orange shag carpet (all of which we had back in the day!)? Fun to be a part of history repeating! I wonder what my daughter will be wearing when she is my age?

Muse psychedelic floral shift dress, White House Black Market pointy black flats, Ralph Lauren black doctor satchel (TJ Maxx), Banana Republic Trina Turk pink bracelet.

Natalie, I love the dress. I think in all it's busyness it's actually sleek and simple and dead easy to style. I am not distracted by the pattern (which I also love), I simply love the style; I also love this length on you, the neckline is pretty, basically keeper and winner.

As for the family history, I think it's hilarious and sweet, also totally natural - we grew up subconsciously taking in the aesthetics our mothers were presenting to us. We either dislike it very much or embrace it or feel intrigued by it and make it work for us. I love how you wear modern version of the style your mum wore all those years ago.

I think it works! And it is really neat that you are channelling your Mum this way :)

You look totally groovy!  I love this look!

You just need a theme song!

Groovy is right. Love the dress and how you are channeling your ever so stylish mom! She is so cute and so are you!

Natalie, I absolutely love this dress on you.  Normally I'm happy with my body shape but I do envy slimmer hipped ladies who can wear this mod shift style, as I've always loved it.

You need some go-go boots!  (Or just try it with booties.  I bet it would be fab.)

And just for fun here is a picture of my mom in something similar when I was a baby!

Thanks Ornella, Ceit, LBD, Kelly and Diana!

Diana, sweet picture of you and your mom! She was a stylish gal! (And yes, I do need a pair of white go-go boots! Maybe I can try my black Frye Melissa boots instead)

Ornella, I think it's funny that when we are little, we want to dress just like mom and play dress up in her clothes. Then when we get a little older we rebel and find our own style. Then as we get older we start coming back around and looking more like mom again! That's me, anyways!

    LBD, I agree, cool song!
The theme song I was actually thinking of was "History Repeating" by the Propellerheads:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sTUIHK7gHRE
    Here are the lyrics:

The word is about, there's something evolving,
whatever may come, the world keeps revolving
They say the next big thing is here,
    that the revolution's near,
but to me it seems quite clear
that it's all just a little bit of history repeating

The newspapers shout a new style is growing,
but it don't know if it's coming or going,
there is fashion, there is fad
some is good, some is bad
and the joke is rather sad,
that its all just a little bit of history repeating

.. and I've seen it before
.. and I'll see it again
.. yes I've seen it before
.. just little bits of history repeating

Some people don't dance, if they don't know who's singing,
why ask your head, it's your hips that are swinging
    life's for us to enjoy
    woman, man, girl and boy,
feel the pain, feel the joy
aside set the little bits of history repeating

.. just little bits of history repeating
.. and I've seen it before
.. and I'll see it again
.. yes I've seen it before
.. just little bits of history repeating

I think you and your mother look fabulous. It's fun!

Well I guess I have loud and garish taste because I love the pattern and the color combination. I think you've added even more sophistication with the point-toe flats and structured bag. I love it.
Your mom looks so pretty and sweet holding her future doctor. :-)

I actually have a huge weakness for dresses like this.  Did you see this one?

So I'm a yay!  I wear these kinds of prints in Hawai'i, where my inner groovy surf chick comes out to play!

We all turn into our mothers sometime in our lives. I like your dress.

  • Mo replied 10 years ago

I love the psychedelic print!  And, yes, I had all those household colored items growing up, too.  We had both green and orange shag carpets, though ;)

I had a swimsuit with a similar print I wish I could duplicate.

  • catgirl replied 10 years ago

Oh, and I tried this one on too - it was really cute on but I had no shoes for it!

I love the psychedelic print! And I think it's awesome that you have a pic of your mom wearing a similar dress.

  • replied 10 years ago

I love it! Like Ornella said, the lines are really clean even though the pattern is busy. You wear a shift dress really well Natalie.

  • Kyle replied 10 years ago

I love the whole '60s mod vibe. Very cool and you wear it well. It seems many of us turn into our mothers in some way, large or small, along the way!

  • lyn* replied 10 years ago

Well, fashion is cyclical after all! :3

I don't think I'm gonna turn into my mother anytime soon - she was really into the minis. Then again, she does have a really cute skirt which has bunny prints (the tails were pom poms).

Your dress is fabulous. I would so like to have it myself. Looks stunning on you. And I agree with the others, you and your mother as such pretty women. (Diana and her mother too by the way.)
