YLF challenge idea: Scarf week (or any other underused accessory)

Hey, I had an idea for a YLF challenge...scarf week! Anyone want to join me? I have a whole collection of scarves that I rarely wear--I tend to reach for necklaces much more often. Scarves tend to be challenging for me to style because 1) I don't really know how to tie them 2) they seem kind of fussy to wear inside 3) I already have so many patterned clothes that it's difficult for me to incorporate them into my outfits. But I wanted to challenge myself to learn to incorporate the scarves that I already have into my style. So next week I'm going to push myself out of my comfort zone and wear a different scarf each day and try to use a different method of tying each day (here is an amazing video tutorial on scarf tying that I need to study carefully: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5LYAEz777AU)

Feel free to contribute your own scarf outfits--just one or two or a whole week (I certainly could use the inspiration!), or if you want more of a challenge and scarves are a breeze for you, then pick another category of accessories that you have but rarely wear...hats? Statement necklaces?

Here are some of the scarves I'm considering using next week:
1. Emilio Pucci turquoise print from Loehmann's
2. Blue pleated scarf from White House Black Market
3. Cheetah print scarf from Target
4. Floral scarf from Kate Spade
5. Cat scarf from Jason Wu for Target

What do you think? Anyone care to join me? Or advice/suggestions for me for about wearing scarves if you are already a pro at them?

I would like to give it a go Natalie. I only have about four nice scarves, One is a recent purchase and hasn't been worn yet so I'll see what I can come up with styling wise.

I don't struggle to wear scarves in general, so I'm not sure this would be the right challenge for me. Although I'm not sure what else I could try to make work either. Maybe I could build outfits around the scarves I don't use that often.

This is the second year I have been wearing scarves, and I do it very often, almost everyday actually. I find they can 'up' any simple, ordinary outfit and make things more interesting. While at the same time, I find they are very easy to wear and practical. This was my first (and only, so far) WIW, with a scarf:

I wear scarves fairly often but I'll join you for one or two days next week. I have some underutilized scarves that it would be fun to challenge myself to wear.

I love love love scarves it is my to go to piece this time of year so I will definitely be in on this one :)

I do wear scarfs everyday because it is COLDIE COLD here but... Could I trade in for belts? I have at least a good 20 to 30 belts that NEVER get worn. I could use some enthusiasm. I'm in with belt week for me!

Heh. For me the challenge would be NOT to wear a scarf. Like Angie, I am feeling a little less enamoured of them for my style, but I wear them every day anyway because it is cold on my neck! Plus, I find they help to integrate my outfits and bookend when I wear darker footwear, etc. Hmmm. I am not quite ready to do the no scarf challenge. But I will happily watch you!

I havent been wearing my scarves as much as i'd like lately. I join you for a day or two as well!

I wear scarves a lot in the winter. Maybe I'll try to use my statement necklaces, as least for the 3 days I'll be working next week.

I'll definitely join you! I think the challenge should have a twist for regular scarf wearers, though. That is, you can't wear your favorite long rectangular scarves. Those have been a winter and wardrobe staple for lots of us for so long that it isn't all that challenging. But...wearing a rectangular or square silk scarf, now that will be work. I'm trying to figure out more ways to wear the latter, so I would love to bump up the challenge that way!

Ooh - I'll join! I have lots of scarves, some of which I find hard to style. I'm also trying to do Imogen's FABuary style challenge for this month, and will be posting my "arm candy" outfit this evening when I get home.

I love scarves and would love to join this challenge.

  • Amy replied 11 years ago

I haven't been wearing my scarves as much this year, but would join in.

I also think a cardigan challenge would be fun/instructive. So many of us seem to be struggling with how to make them work lately!

  • Astrid replied 11 years ago

I love the idea of a cardigan challenge! I only own three, but I'm not very creative with wearing them. I think I'm going to try to find some new ways to wear my lesser worn scarves too.

  • rae replied 11 years ago

I don't have that many scarves, but if it is cool enough I could give this a go!

  • Day Vies replied 11 years ago

I do not struggle to wear scarves at all. It is freezing here but it would be fun to see if I could work some into my dressier outfits with out loosing the polish or the line of the outfits. I'm in.

  • Diana replied 11 years ago

Hmm, I have no problem wearing my scarves but I would be up for a cardigan challenge. They are getting neglected this year.

  • Kristin L replied 11 years ago

I'll join you. Just one question. Does the scarf have to be worn around my neck? I thin this could be a fun way to try to use them as different things, like a belt or a headband.

  • goldenpig replied 11 years ago

Wow, I am looking forward to seeing everyone's scarf outfits!

Hey Suz, Zap and others who wear scarves all the time and don't plan to do the scarf challenge--perhaps you could still post your favorite scarf WIW's from the past to serve as inspiration for us scarf newbies? I want to learn from the scarf pros!

Niefern, great scarf WIW! Kristin, using a scarf as a belt or headband sounds like a great option! And Rae, I'm sure you can find multiple creative ways to wear one scarf if you don't own that many.

Belts, necklaces and cardigans all sound like a great alternative challenges!

  • Sylvie replied 11 years ago

I wear scarves all the time... but maybe I could join in on the necklace challenge (or rather, at least challenge myself to switch my earrings/necklace daily)

  • replied 11 years ago

Natalie, Sona is suggesting a dress challenge too. I would be really fun to do a mesh of the two, what do you think? Should we start Monday?

  • Charmian replied 11 years ago

Oooh, I like this idea. I've been trying to dress extremely casually (background here), and this sounds like a great outlet for my creativity while still keeping with the current goal of casualness.

    When are we starting?

  • goldenpig replied 11 years ago

Yes, let's start Monday. And no problem to combine Sona's dress challenge too--dresses and scarves sound fun! Also, no deadline so if you want to do dresses this week and scarves next week or vice versa--feel free to post whenever you want! Should be fun!
