K/R: Amber Sun black ponte moto jacket

OK, since the Spiegel jacket is a no go, here's another K/R. I don't really have a black blazer except one from Ann Taylor that was part of my interview suit from about 15 years ago. I never wear it. I usually wear my leather jacket as a blazer, but sometimes I might want to wear a non-leather blazer. But I wanted to get something with a little twist or interesting detail rather than just a basic black blazer, that's just my style preference (classics with a twist). So I saw this Amber Sun ponte moto jacket. What do you think? This is styled--in fact I wore it to work like this, but kept the tags on and took it off once I got to work so I can still return it if you don't like it. It felt OK but I was wondering if this is too oversized on me? I think the XS would be too small though, because the sleeve length seems OK on the S. I think it's just I'm not used to relaxed fit. It does feel a touch heavier than a regular blazer, more like a jacket, but I could still wear it inside. I'm showing this completely zipped, partially zipped and open--which looks best? Should I keep or return? Thanks!

11-12. My current Tahari black leather jacket for comparison.

13. Oh yeah, I also have a black wool plaid moto zip jacket.

I really, really like this. I think that you are right about the sizing. The only look I don't love is the totally zipped one. It is very different from the checked wool moto you have ( Beautiful girl in there with a lovely balloon "crown" ).  I figured out that the leather from spiegel over whelmed you with the lapels. This is more refined yet very modern. That is you.

Finally, FWIW, I think ponte is so versatile that you should hang onto it. You could wear this camping for crying out loud and look amazing instead of wearing a sweatshirt.  You get the drift.  So I vote keep.

I guess I am going against the crowds today. I much much prefer the Spiegel for you. The combo of the collar and leather and zippers on this reads much more heavy and aggressive to me.

If you still don't like the Spiegel, have you tried this Classiques Entrier?

Or if you are getting away from leather:

I think it looks soft due to the fabric. I love the cut for you and with the bottom partially zipped, it looks great for work. The fit and size look spot on, I would not size down.

@Rae, did you think this was leather? It's ponte knit.

  • rae replied 10 years ago

No, I know it is ponte knit (we have it at work), but the ponte is thick and stiff, which IMO makes the collar and zippers and leather shoulder details feel very crisp, buttoned-up, and militant (which I do like in general). *shrug* It's just one person's take, but I don't find this jacket ladylike, if that is the goal.

There is also this Caslon moto that is much softer and less boxy.

If you only posted the ponte jacket, I would have thought it looked quite nice. I actually prefer the look of the Tahari that you own (more elegant but not at all boring). Black sometimes looks different IRL, however, and if the ponte jacket 1. fills a niche that the Tahari one doesn't, 2. is comfortable, and 3. is warm enough!, then it is a keeper.

I am not in love with it.  I think the fact you left the tags on it speaks to you not being in love with it either ;)

    I would return it.

i like the Classique jacket and the Caslon moto that Rae posted better.

    This looks a little boxy.

I totally see what you mean, Rae, I also see the Spiegel as a more feminine jacket.

I don't see this fitting in your style either, Natalie. It's pretty rugged/military looking. I like it and would wear it a lot, but I don't think it plays well with your pencil skirts. Your leather jackets are a much better match.

I am not crazy about this one on you, and I think it has to do with the texture of the ponte. It looks good open, but done up there is something that seems a bit wonky about the fit. That might just be the way it is photographing, though, or a styling issue. Not that you have styled it badly (on the contrary, it looks great with that fab skirt!) but sometimes when we are a bit unsure it comes across in our posture, etc. and it could be affecting my perception. But it reads a bit more like an "outdoor" jacket to me than an indoor one somehow.

I really like the Caslon one that Rae posted. It is a bit more refined and I see it working better with your style.

I'm with others, I like this piece but I don't love it on you.  It has a slightly more rugged vibe than I perceive your style.

Thanks everyone! And Rae, thanks for the recommendations. I ordered the Caslon moto blazer and I think it's going to work out well! It's a little more fitted than the Amber Sun, which feels a little boxy on me, so I think I'll return.
