Trying on Burberry trenches

On my birthday, before we went to the Chanel store we dropped by Brooks Brothers to return the trench coat (tried it on in 18-19 in a size 4). Then we passed by Burberry and I decided to just go it and have a look. I tried on several coats--the two I liked best were the purple in 1-5 and the one with the leather buckle trim in 6-8 (shown with coat open and tied in the back). Also tried on a plain style in 9-11 and a fantasy UWP Matrix-style trench coat in 12-15 (it reminds me of Una/Rae and all those other tough UWPs, doesn't really fit as well with my style). That one is $5000, though, so not a real contender. Some inspiration photos in 15-17 (cool shimmery trench coat!).

What do you think of these different styles? Since I was planning on spending $5000 for the purse, I could afford to get a Burberry if I really wanted to. I think these were all size 6, except #6-8 was maybe a size 4. I am not feeling pressured to buy...I can wait till Christmas if needed, or just stick with my current Kate Spade and Anthro trench coats. It's interesting also that you can see a quality difference in the pics between the fit of the Burberry and the Brooks Brothers one in 18-19. Anyways, feel free to chime in on whether you like any of these or not on me and any other fit issues. Hope this helps others who are contemplating!

The purple is so unique and beautiful on you Natalie- I can't see past it!
But I don't know what colour your other trenches are, and if you already have something in a similar shade.
I also really like the black with contrasting sleeves, but understand if it is not your style.
I am not sure about the cream one in terms of bringing out the glow in your skin as the purple does.
Fun to see these gorgeous coats!

Lyn, click on the link to my prior thread. I have pics of my current trenches there...a black ruffled Kate Spade, a beige with black trim Kate Spade, and a red Anthro corset trench. The purple trench would be the most different from my other ones. I think I'd like something burgundy/purplish. They have burgundy sateen trenches as well, but he said the sateen trenches are not waterproof.

    Done.
Sticking to my choice, especially since you already have a beige trench that is  lovely with the black trim.

Vote for the burgundy one! That is beyond fab!

The burgundy one is really lovely on you Natalie! But -- can you wear it with Miss Scarlet??  (Half-serious question only....I know you have other bags.)

The difference in fit between the BB and the Burberry is amazing. Quite evident when you compare side by side. Which I guess is fair, considering the price difference.

Definitely choose between the burgundy and the black... the burgundy looks the safer choice but will you get more of a kick out of the UWP I wonder...?

  • rae replied 10 years ago

Hm, I am not convinced that any of these are Ms. Right for you (sorry to be a downer). My vote would be to keep looking and to wear the current trenches in the mean time. I like the purple color the best, but it's not really making your outfit sing like your KS and Anthro trenches do (and for Burberry prices, it ought to, right?).

The other issue is that I'm wondering if these are too small? The waist buttons look like they might be pulling a little, like maybe you can't button the ones above? Maybe it is just the light.

I agree that the quality of the cut and tailoring really stands out when you compare the light Burberry to the BB trench. It makes your figure look absolutely perfect!

Am I right in assuming that this would be your most expensive trench coat by far? If so, I would go with the classic honey color. For some reason I like the color of the one in 9, 10 & 11 better than the leather trimmed one in 6, 7 & 8. Are they different shades IRL? You often have lively, colorful outfits underneath (to say nothing of Miss Scarlet) so I think the honey would provide a better backdrop, especially when worn open.

I do love the wine colored plaid trench with your complexion. Love! And I agree that it's a better color on you, but I'm not sure it's the most practical for something that you will have for a Very Long Time. It's a very memorable pattern and color and you may tire of it, or even feel that it "dates" your trench to F/W 2013--since it's such a big wine/burgundy year.

Rae has a great point though. It's not like you are "pressed" to buy a trench right now. You have some great ones and it's not like Burberry are going to stop making fab trench coats anytime soon. :)

The burgundy is most you and fits pretty well. The BB doesn't fit at all, and IMO the others also don't fit right - things aren't curving where you curve.

But I'm such a trench hater, I don't wear my own trench coat. The only time I like one is when traveling, and then I have to tell y'all - London Fog is the name of the game for me.

I'm with Rae -- I'm not sure any of these is really a 10 on you.  Don't let the Girl Math Money burn a hole in your pocket!

I love the purple, but am not sure if you should invest in Burberry right after having a baby. I took this pic for you though last night. It is not my style but i thought of you. It is on sale at Topanga Nordstrom for $251 down from about $425 I think. The quality looks as good as Burberry. I dont know how water resistant it is. It is a sz 2 but you are trying on 4s & 6s in Burberry, which is my sz too. It is Ted Baker London.

I love #1, but I agree with the other ladies - none of these are 10's on you (yet!) - I think that your beautiful collection of trenches are great until you can find a burberry you truly love completely (almost as much as Miss Scarlet?)

I love your Kate Spades and your red Anthro coat - I'm trying to bid for one on eBay so we can be twins :D

  • elpgal replied 10 years ago

Burgundy one for sure. I can see it fitting in with a lot of your outfits.

  • catgirl replied 10 years ago

I absolutely love the purple on you.  I find Burberry to run so small, I might try a size up.  But agree with MaryK and Rae that this may not be the one.  It's CLOSE, though!

  • goldenpig replied 10 years ago

Thanks LynD, Lyn67, Moni, Rae, Claire, Rachy, Mary, Elle, Lyn, Elpgal, and Una! I think you are all correct...none of these make my heart skip a beat so I think it's best to keep looking. I'm in no hurry!
Lyn, I hope you find a red Anthro coat so we can be twins!
Elle, that fuschia coat is gorgeous on you! I think I'm a little bigger than you but thanks for thinking of me!

I think I'm between a 6 and an 8 in Burberry. The 6's that I tried were a bit snug so I'd probably have to go with an 8.

  • ElleH replied 10 years ago

Then somebody better buy that Ted Baker trench. It was so fab & so not my colour or style.
