What's in your closet "purge-atory"? Here's mine!

I recently posted a WIW with an old mint green skirt with daisies on it that I've had for decades.
http://youlookfab.com/welookfa.....yay-or-nay
I was unanimously told to get rid of it, that it's horribly dated and the colors are all wrong for me. Yet I'm still really sentimentally attached to it and I'm not sure I can get rid of it! Rita was saying, "Maybe it can stay in the secret sad corner of your closet" for the pieces that really shouldn't be there but somehow are exempt from purging. I thought that was really a really funny concept (but so true!) and thought it would be worthy of its own thread! Hopefully this will be useful/therapeutic!

What pieces in your closet really should be purged and you know it, but somehow you can't bring yourself to get rid of them? I'm calling it closet "purge-atory" because they manage to reside there in limbo, safe from purging because they're sentimental favorites, but not getting worn either. Why are you holding on to these pieces--what do they mean to you?

And I'm not talking about the pieces you're planning to purge when you get around to it. For that stuff, I challenge you to start posting some keep or purge threads (I plan to do this soon myself with some of those pieces). I mean the really stubborn stuff that seems to be purge-proof! I think talking about it will either help us decide why we need to keep these things, or else spur us to finally let go!

Here's some of my purgatory pieces (and no I didn't try these all on, they're from old threads):
1. The aforementioned daisy skirt. I have had this so long I don't remember buying it and it has survived many purges. I feel very feminine when I wear it and I've always liked it. Now I can see that it's dated with the small print and the shape. I know it should go but I'm not ready yet.
2. My 80's acrylic neon handprint sweater. I would never wear this out unless it was an 80's costume party, but it's the only piece of clothing I managed to save from when I was a teenager. So it's more memorabilia than anything else. It's residing with my other mementoes, not in my closet.
3-5. More floaty printed skirts from my 90's Ann Taylor era. I have so many of these still! I still like the skirt and top in #3 even though now I know that beige is not my color. Plus it's my only maxi skirt. The top in gets no love here either but I'm keeping it to go with the skirt. I got rid of the tops in 4-5 but the skirts are still hanging around. I think I may be ready to let go of these two now though, thanks to this thread!
6. Pink floral printed blouse from H&M. It's the only pink top I own. I used to wear it all the time with jeans and red pumps (because the flowers are printed in red. But it's rather low cut. I'm on the fence about this one, I think I may be ready to get rid of it (actually it was in the donate pile, but DD rescued it and said "This is pretty!"). This is DD at her first birthday party, BTW!
7-8. Two Anthro tops that I bought several years ago, pre-YLF. I used to get tons of compliments on these two (several patients were like, "I have that brown top too!"). Now they don't feel so fab in comparison with my new stuff. The neck on #7 is annoyingly wide so I have to wear a strapless bra with it and brown isn't really my color, but I'm keeping it for now because I like to wear it under my orange poncho and this is the only long sleeve brown shirt I have. #8 is my color (rust orange) but it's a little too frou-frou and ruffly-puffly. I feel like it makes me look a little pregnant. And it's also a bit low cut. I'm on the fence about this one, it might be able to go to the donate pile now. I still have the skirt in #8 too but I like it a lot too!
9-10. My plaid miniskirt! From my college days. I posted this before and the consensus was that my post-baby tummy is straining the buttons. I last wore it for a 60's themed holiday party in Dec 2010 (DH and I went as a NASA scientist and mod girl, bucking the hippie groovy theme that everyone else went for). I'm keeping this forever because DH thinks I look hot in it, LOL. I think I may have to let out the buttons a bit though to give my apple tummy some more room!

Also, I have a whole collection of Paul Frank T shirts and purses that need to go, but that's another story (need to figure out eBay first).

Well, that was useful! I think at least 4 of these are inching their way closer to the donate pile! What do you think? Any encouragement on which ones to let go? Just don't say all of them! :) By the way, I finally made it to the consignment store today to sell some things for the first time, and they took 11 pieces! And I donated the rest. Yay!

Can't wait to hear your "purge-atory" stories! And LOL, I can't believe I am posting an album of un-fabness. That has got to be a new one for YLF!

I have a grey sweater tunic that I need to purge but somehow, I can never bring myself to pull the trigger! I should try to wear it in a few outfits to see if I really want it or if I'm just hanging onto it since hubby and I bought it together.

Of everything you've posted, I love the plaid mini! Please don't give that away! :D

I often reason things out by writing. Don't know why I never tried this with things I suspect I shouldn't keep but still am. This will give me plenty to do. :D

Love the picture of you in the short plaid skirt and the two girls in their pink at the birthday party.

I like the plaid mini, makes you look so young! It is very mod indeed (you always whip up nice costume party outfits!) I too had some pieces but lately I've been ruthless. And by that, I gave them all to my mom who of course doesn't get rid of it, but keeps them in my old closet, and when I go home, I have an old-clothes fest. Sometimes i re-purpose things, but most of the time is out of sight out of mind.
IBUT I STILL have about 10 wool skirts ( i think) , some bias cut, some tulip shaped, some minis) I used to wear with tights and boots. Now they survive all purges ( still in good shape, still fit - some I altered to) but they still don't get much wear as I migrated to dresses in winter, and of course jeans. Will I throw them away, probably not. Hmm, maybe I should do a k/r

I can see why you'd find it hard to let go of those skirts or that ruffled skirt, even when you've left that style behind. And the handprint sweater is indeed a fun memento of the wonder years.

Me, I can't even identify my purge-atory candidates yet. But this is still very inspiring, Natalie --- evidence that even the most stylish of us have to work at keeping themselves on the straight and narrow... and that it *can* be done!

Thanks for this thread! You've been quite the firestarter of late! Keep 'em coming, do, because they are so very helpful.

I don't have anything in Purge-atory (great wording btw!) as I'm really ruthless with binning things!
I do have a weird kind of "too dressy" holding zone that contains a pair of Top Shop satin wide leg trousers, a Karen Millen sequin camisole and a beautiful beaded corset top - all in black. They all fit like a dream and look great but are FAR too dressy for my lifestyle and I can't see when I'd ever wear them (they were all gifts) but I can't bear to get rid.

Of yours, I'm with Kirti, I love the check mini skirt. I think it still looks great and you should keep it :0)

I'm a master purger, perhaps I dispose of things way too soon. The only item in purge-atory is a Contempo casuals crocheted sweater that has this floral design. I've had this thing for about 22 years. I was 16 or so when I got it. It is not going anywhere.
I've been thinking of rocking it, why not? I actually saw something very similar on F21 a few months ago.
I used to have those floral skirts and matching tops as well. They were lifesavers in the summertime.

I just let go one of my items - I took a photo and should purge it so I'm not sad. It was a coral colored mohair cardigan that I got at a consignment store 25 years ago. I wore it regularly every year (including maternity) until this year. It is in amazing condition, just not stylish or flattering.
I have more, but haven't made myself accountable for them until I purge the necessary ones. I have boxes of concert tshirts that I will not part with (although I saw new ones at Topshop just like one of mine)

Well, I took another load to the consignment store yesterday (all of my *wrong* straw and thrifted bags, etc.) The only thing they didn't want was my Ann Taylor A-line denim skirt, which was way too nice to donate to Goodwill (even thought that's where I bought it). I can't donate it to DFS either because it's denim. So that's in purge-atory.

I'm also hanging onto my Tignanello silver leather bag which is very beat up and one of the zippers doesn't even close the teeth of the zipper so I have to remember to use the other one. That purse represents the first major purchase I made after getting interested in fashion and I've used it hard for several years. It went with everything I owned. Now I'm down to Monty, Big Blue and the silver Tig bag. I need to purge it, but I have to make sure everything I have will go with one of my other two bags first. (Oh, and I have that new tan canvas cross-body, but I haven't cut the tags off it yet.) I have a fond spot for the silver bag, but once I determine that I no longer need or use it, out it goes!

Still too many things to list. sigh. One in particular I guess would be a blue, brown and cream abstract large floral print silk blouse (button down) that I got lots of compliments back when I wore it, but now it doesn't fit into my lifestyle. Oh and a tiny cute as a puppy coach bag that was too small the day I bought it but I wasn't willing to shell out another $150 for the larger size. At least it got use before finding itself in purge-atory.

Oh Natalie, I am in a major purge mode. As you know, I have been sick for sometime. I felt as if the house fell around me during that time. Though we hired a wonderful house cleaning team, the clutter has just grown....and I gained so much weight that nothing fit. So I have just packed things up and out !!!! I just can't take it...the stuff is somehow zapping me of energy. So next up are my Spring and Summer clothes. I just want them gone !

So my answer to you is nothing ! It either stays or it goes.

Oprah magazine is all about decluttering this month. There is a hysterical article on Gayle King's closet makeover. Even my husband laughed his butt off and asked "what is it with women and their clothes ? " But the organizer suggested that you get things out as soon as possible so that you don't have second thoughts. I read the article, took some boxes I had packed up the week before, put them in the car and drove to the Salvation Army right then and there. LOL

I have a couple of buckets at the top of my closet (on some shelves) where I throw things I think I don't want any more. It seems that over time, when I go through the buckets, it's easier to get rid of the items. I do have a few things hanging in my closet though, that I just am not ready to get rid of. :-)

How funny, I just posted about the same topic topic, only I called them "wardrobe zombies"!

    Here are mine...

    - Project Alabama shirts, handmade and really cool but oh, just too short in the midriff. I have four of them purchased over the years on ebay and at sample sales and they are going bye... :(

    - Guess jeans shorts from jeans I owned when I was 13. All of the buttons in the buttonfly have worked loose and been replaced. **They still fit.** No no, not going ANYWHERE.

    - Daryl K denim jacket from the 90's. Crisp and nice but not me anymore. I'm saving it for my kid. She'll want it, right?

    - Betsey Johnson dresses from the 90's. Man, I so cannot wear these now! Maybe they'd look good, but I'd feel impossibly MDAL. Glad I wore them when I could - including the one I wore to get married in Reno. Also saving for kiddo.

    - Two leather jackets my mother gave me. One is a full-length kermit-green suede collarless suede she stalked at Philene's Basement as an undergrad at MIT. I think she bought it for $20 and it is beyond the best. The other is an awesome dark brown leather 70's number she wore when my dad was a grad student at CalTech, before they had me. Note I never wear either of these items, although I did wear the dark brown one A LOT in the late 90s. But they're not going anywhere either.

    - Probably all of my cashmere and winter coat items from NYC. They are not very useful to me in Austin. I've been prying them out of my hands one by one over the 4 years since I've left the east coast. But give up my Katayone Adeli and Helmut Lang wool coats?! My soft nice 'shmeres?! NO! NO! NO! (whimpers, clutches them)

I have a 2 piece vintage Jackie O style suit that includes a teal sheath dress and matching duster jacket. I wore it to my rehearsal dinner 10 years ago. It is so gorgeous and perfect in every way. I don't think it would fit me now and it definitely doesn't fit my lifestyle but I am not letting it go just yet. I also have both pairs of my wedding shoes - one pair of vintage silver new old stock pumps and a pair of lucite and rhinestone slingbacks - but I let the kids play dress up with them. Then there's the museum of rarely worn but much loved shoes. The cheap ones come and go but the lovelies have been with me for quite some time. I guess I'll have to revisit this stash as I need to free up some space for my burgeoning handbag collection!

Let's see...I have two shirts that I used to love and wear all the time that I am just tired of and/or are not my style anymore. One of them is also missing a (fabric covered--not replaceable) button. For some reason I keep thinking maybe I'll start loving them again, so they've been in purge-atory for several months now. I also have a black and white printed shirt that I've only worn like one time. I don't want to give it away because it's so new, but I don't want to wear it because it's not my style (I will admit it, I bought it because it was on clearance, ugh!).
