YLF Challenge: Update your dated items!

I have been trying to update my apparently dated 90's bias cut skirts and we've been discussing what's dated or "out" in these threads:

Denise mentioned that she was also going to try to update one of her dated items. So I thought that would be a fun YLF challenge to open up to the group. Take your oldest or most dated item in your closet and see if you can rescue it by styling it with modern pieces and bring it up to date. How old is this item, when was the last time you wore it, and how do you feel wearing it now? Do you plan to keep it, or do you realize now that it's time to purge it and move on? Hopelessly non-salvageable dated items welcome too if you want to post just for laughs! If it's still in your closet, it's fair game!

Thanks for playing--I can't wait to see what you come up with!

PS I'm going to purge the brown skirt, but the blue ditsy floral and black/white/red geometric print patterns are staying in my closet, dated or not! :)

Fun! I will try to play along sometime next week, but for the time being here is how I updated my almost 20 year old early 90s ditsy floral blouse. (It's from Miller's Outpost - anyone remember that store? It was my favorite as a teenager, LOL.)

1st photo is unstyled - so 90s! 2nd photo is my update.

Diana, great update of the blouse--it looks totally different underneath the blue dress--really emphasizes the pretty collar. I remember Miller's Outpost! We used to go there a lot (and there was one at the Y in Tahoe, remember Mo?). I bought bandannas in pink and teal and lavender and wore them as headbands, with the knot at the top of my head. It was so cool in junior high to be seen with one of those yellow drawstring Miller's Outpost shopping bags to carry your gym clothes etc. I remember begging my parents to take me shopping there just so I could get one of those bags.

Miller's Outpost was THE place to buy jeans in the late 70's/early 80's and they did the total western theme in their stores then with fitting doors that looked like old west saloon doors.
Even if I had jeans from then, they wouldn't fit sadly. :)
Your blouse is looking pretty good under the dress actually!

I have one I need feedback on - not styled but I realized today I purged all my black dressy heeled sandals and only have various flats and a patent wedge and a metallic casual wedge - I need a dressy black sandal to probably pair with bootcut gray or white jeans and maybe a skirt next week on a trip. Are these seriously dated? Sigerson Morrison bought about 5 years ago but they were meant to be retro. Too much toe cleavage? I don't wear often due to that issue but I never purged as they were $$$ and fairly comfy.

Be honest - still a chance I can grab a pair that will work before we leave on Wednesday.

Christieanne, I can't speak to if they are dated but I think they are a stunning sandal. I would wear these and I'm not a lover of sandals in general. They look elegant and sophisticated and I think they definitely have a hint of retro.

Oh, yes, I remember Miller's Outpost. Not just in Tahoe, but like Christieanne says, with the saloon doors, at The Hub in Fremont in the early early 80's. Got all my 501 Levi's there (for about $14 if I recall).

Does it count if I altered something to save it from being dated?? I took my $10 Attention from Kmart, wide leg, matte satin trousers and had them turned into cigarette legs last month. http://youlookfab.com/welookfa.....e-pants-yn

Thank you for starting the challenge Natalie! I will be joining for sure but I don't have any time off until Tuesday. So I will post about it in a separate thread.

Natalie -- I think the first two outfits work nicely and they don't look dated to me, since work attire doesn't date as quickly as smart casual attire.

Christineanne -- Shoes look good to me, and since you are wearing with bootcuts they won't be that visible either.

Mo -- what an amazing transformation and yes I think they count with this challenge.

I like this thread. I can't think of anything really dated that I have, but maybe I'm being delusional. I'll have to comb through my stuff and see.

Millers Outpost. Thanks for the memory. This was THE store where my two sons insisted they had to shop during their junior high and high school years. Of course, I sometimes found something for myself too.

Natalie, great thread! I like the way you styled the skirts in pictures 1&2 and I think they look updated now. Nice work! I just finished taking in a square T from Goodwill. I made little inverted box pleats in the cap sleeves to make them more sleek and sewed curved side seams to make the fit more modern. It's still really short though, and will need to be worn with skirts to look right. No pics yet, as I am a mess. :)

Great thread! I love #1 - the jacket doea wonders!

Diana: wearing the blouse under the dress makes a whole lot of difference. suddenly you can actually see the collar and the sleeves and cuffs

christieanne: I think the sandals are wonderful! IMO they look very classic and chic.

Mo: what a differnce on the trousers! impressive!

I'll have to dig into my closet and see what I can find :-)
