Are you embarrassed to wear clothes to the store you bought them from?

This is a silly worry, but it comes up for me frequently since I only buy clothes from a handful of stores and often have to return stuff I ordered online. I confess--if I'm planning to visit a store to return stuff, I try to remember not to wear clothes from that store because I don't want the SA's to recognize my clothes. Like when I'm going to Anthropologie or White House Black Market to return a bunch of stuff and I'm wearing one of their outfits (especially if it's head to toe from that store), I feel kinda silly because I know the SA's know I bought it there and I don't want them to think I'm totally unoriginal. The worst was when I went to Target to return some Missoni stuff and I realized I was wearing a Missoni Target blouse. D'oh! I felt like a total dork!

Does anyone else feel this way or am I being totally silly and neurotic?

Hi Natalie, no this doesn't bother me:). Hopefully they think I'm a good advert for their clothing :)

  • Mander replied 12 years ago

I worry about this sometimes, but it's because I imagine being accused of shoplifting. Especially if I try something on while I'm there.

  • Louise replied 12 years ago

I'd never thought about so I guess it can't bother me. I'd certainly hope to get excellent customer service if I was dressed in their stuff as it shows I'm a frequent customer x

  • shipskitty replied 12 years ago

LOL nope otherwise I might have to visit at least one department store nekkid...since most of my wardrobe comes from there in one form or another...

Oh, glad to hear that I am not the only one with that problem. There is one particular store that I used to order most of my clothes from. I prefer on-line shopping and they have really easy and free orders and returns system, great sales, consistent sizing and quality so I got lazy and started ordering only from them. But I also like to go in their store just to get the feeling for colors and materials which is difficult to do on-line. But a few times I caught my self wearing their clothes from had to toe and was too embarrassed to go in.

  • Mochi replied 12 years ago

I feel the opposite. If I go into a store with a bagfull of items to return, I'm saying (non-verbally) that here's proof I do keep SOME of their stuff, LOL.

  • Erica replied 12 years ago

I do, because of the fear they'll suspect I was shoplifting, especially with shoes!

  • Makrame replied 12 years ago

Interesting question - occasionally I might realize going into a store that I am wearing two or more items that I bought there (only happens in one or two stores). If I notice that, I usually think - well, at least they will know that I am likely to buy something and perhaps I'll get better service as a result.

I am also always curious to see what SAs are wearing since many tend to dress in "store merchandise" (I am sure this is encouraged to promote the clothes the store is selling). It is always interesting to see the clothes on real people rather than mannequins.

I never thought about that. I guess it doesn't bother me. I shop online, as the local stores don't carry my size, so I'm not in the stores much anyway. I usually don't go to the mall unless shopping for one of my daughters.

  • cobaltblue replied 12 years ago

Nope, I do not feel this way. I do feel awkward if I wind up at the mall in my ranching, not-going-to-town grubbies, as I did the other day when I had to make an unexpected trip to the Apple store. I tried to look in at Banana Republic but I felt inappropriate, like I wasn't worthy to be there. Silly, I'm sure, but I left without trying on anything.

  • Queen Mum replied 12 years ago

haha- no, I think it gives me credibility.

  • Diana replied 12 years ago

Ha, not at all. I suspect that I may actually get better customer service because of it. I do feel more comfortable in a store if I fit their general aesthetic. For example, yesterday I was wearing a very colorful, Anthro-esque outfit and walking into All Saints, where I immediately felt like a giant colorful sore thumb!

This happened to me a few weeks ago! I was returning some items to J. Crew, and made a conscious decision not to wear my Metro coat to the store. But upon reading everyone else's replies, maybe I was being a bit silly...

  • nicoleb replied 12 years ago

Omg i never even thought of the shoplifting aspect of it! @_@

For me it depends -- I can wear something that came from that store awhile back while shopping in that store and be fine. But if i'm wearing something on my body that's i can see still on the hanger for sale...then it does make me feel a little weird. I'm not sure why...

  • Meredith1953 replied 12 years ago

I like wearing items into stores that I purchased them from. The staff is usually happy to see customers wearing their merchandise and they tend to treat you better. Now, wearing head to toe might be a little weird though.

I'm on the side of wanting to demonstrate what a regular customer I am. :) But in reality the returns people don't seem to care much about the customers or their jobs. They're downright hostile, some of them and even hostile to the store manager.

I was in a local store where I buy things regularly through the years and the manager, with whom I've bantered a bit, called out to me how good I looked in the jacket I was wearing. My favorite warm weather jacket: black unlined cotton, silver zippers showing. I answered that yes and it was mine, purchased in the store last year.

In one of the thrift stores I shop in the dressing room is the ladies room and it is just about roomy enough for 2 and so people chat a bit. One woman has started asking me if I bought what I was wearing there and if not, where. One of the elderly volunteers has exclaimed about a coat I was wearing, "You didn't get that *here*, did you." And yes I had.

ETA: what I meant is that the mgr was advocating I buy that jacket, since I was
near the racks and picking up a few others and looking at them.

  • Isabel replied 12 years ago

Usually not...because I am rarely in a brand head to toe. I also tend to buy at the same stores regularly. There isn't a whole lot of selection locally. It actually makes me feel a little better. As if I am saying, " See, I DO keep some stuff ! "

A few weeks ago, I went to the Loft, and I realied I was in Loft head to toe, even a necklace !! And I ran into a neighbor who was also in Loft, head to toe. It was comical. But what really struck me was how different we looked from each other and the sales ladies...who...were....you guessed it...head to toe !

This never crossed my mind! I did have a funny experience in Nordstrom once, though. I was wearing a Tahari satin dress, which I had purchased elsewhere. A sales associate came up to me gushing over the dress, which she had never seen; however, they apparently sold a satin shell made out of the same fabric. We bonded over our love for that particular fabric.

If you work with the same sales associates, they often *like* to see the clothes in action and find out how they're working out for you. It's an affirmation for them that they did a good job in helping you out.

  • Debora replied 12 years ago

Nope, not at all! I find that the sales associates are genuinely pleased to see me wearing something that they sold or recommended to me.

I'm in the camp that you get better service when they see that you are wearing their merchandise. I was shopping at Nordstrom's last week and was wearing the boots that I had bought there last July during NAS. I was surprised when I felt a tap on my shoulder - it was the salesman who had sold me the boots months ago. He told me to stop by the shoe department when I was finished with my shopping and he would polish my boots for me. I was flabbergasted. Now that's great customer service!

  • replied 12 years ago

Oh, Natalie, this SO happens to me! Sometimes I make a decision to not wear clothes from that store. There was a store near my old workplace where the SA knew me. But one of them was so sweet and offered me a pen, and another time a coupon for frequent customers, when she realized i was buying a dress in the shop , wearing one from the same shop. But i decided to let it go. It doesn't really matter.

  • Jewell replied 12 years ago

How funny! Nope, doesn't bother me at all. More than once I've gone into a store dressed head to toe in items that came from there. It's a wonder they didn't prop me up in the window alongside the mannequins! Some of the sales associates in the bigger department stores have commented that seeing someone in the garments helped them see potential where they hadn't seen it before, and then they went looking for what I was wearing!

  • replied 12 years ago

YES! I feel funny about this sometimes, especially if it's more than one article of obvious clothing. It feels funniest to me in Target, when the items I'm wearing are still on the sales floor. I DO get worried that someone might think I'm shoplifting or that I never shop anywhere else! I have several Target scarves, and sometimes if I know I'm going there, I'll avoid wearing one.

And another (but related) thing: I often shop a certain store in *spurts* where I'll try one numerous items, buy a few, come back the next day to return some and try on more. If the same exact people are working the fitting rooms or returns desk I start to feel a bit sheepish and then I might avoid that store for a while.

  • Jonesy replied 12 years ago

I don't really think about it, but it is something that my SO worries about :).

  • Mo replied 12 years ago

I mostly shop online, eBay, or at a local discount chain that has many brands. So I am never in a 'head to toe' one brand/store outfit. But I guess wearing an obviously from that store item, that is currently being sold on the racks, might be a little awkward, from the possible shoplifting angle.

  • nancylee replied 12 years ago

Since there isn't a lot of shopping where I live (and most of my buying is online), I don't have this problem. But I can understand how you might feel a little awkward, especially if you're doing a lot of returning that day!

I think the argument that you're a good advertisement for their clothing is a valid one. Be proud that you're supporting their store. Most likely, the salesclerks are wearing the store's clothing, too!

  • Ornella replied 12 years ago

    On the contrary.

And, personally, even if I'd cross my mind what SAs think of my clothes, I'd expect them to be happy I wear and promote their clothes, as opposed to thinking I'm unoriginal.

  • rae replied 12 years ago

I totally do this! If it's current season, I'm always afraid someone will accuse me of shoplifting. I took off my AT jacket when I went in there to do an online return.

  • Aziraphale replied 12 years ago

This is so funny, gp, because I was thinking about this just the other day, and I do the exact opposite! I generally buy from a handful of shops, too, and there's one in particular -- a local boutique -- where the staff know me, and I go out of my way to wear their clothing if I plan to stop in.

Mind you, I'm allergic to returning things (part of the reason I never buy online), so that's not a factor for me. If I buy something, I make darn sure I really like it, which means I spend more time in the shop staring at myself from all angles in the mirror, which also probably explains why the shop girls know my name....

  • Transcona Shannon replied 12 years ago

Nope, not at all. In fact, I consider it free advertising for them and showing other clients in the store what the item looks like on a real person.

  • lyn* replied 12 years ago

OMG; I thought I was the only person who felt this way! Even WALKING into the store makes me go ... uh....

When I wear my F21 jacket; I never go to F21 - it's a good thing; it lets my friends know which stores are "off limits."

I wore head-to-toe Smart Set once: and the SA was like - "Oh, you liked last season's selections." After that, I have been uber paranoid.

    I blame her.
