Challenge: Wardrobe Remix--Create 14 New Outfits

In my fashion magazine thread I posted that I found this article inspiring:
http://www.redbookmag.com/beau.....ll-outfits
They took six new fall pieces and combined them with 12 "wardrobe basics" that most people already own, and created 30 different outfits (actually 14 more on the website so 44 total!). As Lynne pointed out, this would be a great YLF challenge since you all are so creative at mixing things up and putting together new outfits. For me this will be a great fun challenge, since my usual MO in the past has been to wear the same sweater with the same skirt or pants without any layering or accessories. I would love to combine some of my new purchases with my old pieces and push my wardrobe to a new level. (I think I'll have to buy a belt or two first though!)

So, how about it? Let's take six of your new fall wardrobe items (if you're on SYC, then just use your newest items, or ones that you haven't been using much lately) and then combine it with 12 other basic items (or 6 basics if you want to make it really challenging!). Then post 14 of your favorite combos. Bonus points for trying to make new combos that you haven't worn before! Let's see what you've got!

This sounds fun! I'd like to participate. .But can each of us pick a different start date? Because for me, it's too early to begin wearing fall clothes, and although I'm going to have to make some purchases, in my town the fall stuff is just starting to come into the stores.

  • goldenpig replied 12 years ago

Sure! Or you can even do it with summer clothes! I think it's going to take me a little while too, because I'm missing most of the "wardrobe basics" that they listed, so I would like to pick up a couple of items first like a belt, tank or camisole, etc.

I'd need to start this in October but it sounds like fun, especially since several of us have some of the same new (NAS) pieces.

  • Ginny replied 12 years ago

I would love to give this atry but it is still super hot here, i vote for October too!!! Sounds like fun!!!

  • Carole replied 12 years ago

Oh, I love this! I tried this with the spring version for a summer/vacation capsule I created...here is the link:

I'm I but might have to wait awhile to put together a fall wardrobe. I feel like summer just started here!

  • rachylou replied 12 years ago

    So creative!

I too am still waiting for the fall fashion to hit the stores in my area. The only thing I've gotten are two pairs of "fat pants." LOL. And I don't think I'll be able to wear them long, which is a bummer 'cuz I really like them.

But doctors are strongly intimating I ought to lose 5-10 lbs. They want me not just not overweight but skinny. Bleah. I lost the genetic lottery.

  • bella replied 12 years ago

This is a fun idea. It made me think of a mini summer challenge. How about something like take the least worn summer item from your closet and wear it in 3 different ways?

  • Mo replied 12 years ago

This does sound like fun but I'm also in the 'fall is a LONG way off' group here in hot FL. All my recent purchases were long sleeved tops. I would have to tweak this somehow to work for me right now. I could do an indoors, a/c, not IRL version of dress up lol.

  • Suz replied 12 years ago

Bella, I love your idea for those of us who are still in full summer mode. That actually sounds like most of us, so far! Goldenpig, how about we wait a bit to start your fab challenge and in the meantime try Bella's? Bella, what if we put it in a new thread? I can see some fun (and maybe wacky) combinations coming out of that.

  • Charmian replied 12 years ago

Ooh, this sounds like fun! Goldenpig, I could do this challenge right now in overcast Seattle, but it sounds like there are some folks who have weather challenges at the moment. Just let us know when you like to start!

  • Lynne replied 12 years ago

Squee! GP, I'm in, and waiting until October is fab as it gives me a chance to go through that link again. What was really challenging about it was that the 18 items included belts and shoes.

Suz and Bella, I will join the summer challenge too. I missed having a picture to start with this morning :).

  • goldenpig replied 12 years ago

Haha, I didn't think about the weather...I live in the SF Bay Area so I wear fall clothes year round. In fact it's often colder in the summer because of the fog! But I grew up in Arizona, so I certainly can sympathize with everyone sweltering in the heat.

I've never posted a challenge so I don't know how you guys typically do these, but I'm pretty flexible. I propose we do some sort of challenge now, and then maybe another one in October. That way everyone can participate! I'd love to see what you come up with! Maybe I'll do one with red/black clothes now and then brown/autumn tones later, or vice versa. Also, I wasn't necessarily planning on waiting till I wore all the outfits out...so you can just try them on at home for fun, or take pictures of just the outfits themselves without trying them on.

For this challenge, you have the option of any of the following (pick whichever you like!)
    1. Summer clothes if it's hot where you live
    2. Fall clothes now if you live in a temperate environment (or if it's too hot out, just try them on at home in the AC and snap a picture indoors)
    3. If you don't feel up to doing the whole 14 outfits, do Bella's suggestion of outfits using one summer piece worn three ways.

How about posting by Sept 15? Is that enough time for everyone? Then maybe if people want to, we can do another round in October to finish by Halloween?

  • Lynne replied 12 years ago

I've just been going through the link, and I notice that tights, bags and jewellry haven't been featured at all. So I propose that these items can be include as extras, and not counted in the 18 pieces....do you agree?

    I'm looking forward to this!

  • chewyspaghetti replied 12 years ago

    This sounds really fun!
There is another option ladies- nobody says that you have to wear the outfits now that you come up with. I'm clearly months away from fall weather, but I'm sick of summer dressing and would prefer to do fall outfits. I can figure them out, take photos and keep track of them to wear when it actually does cool off.

  • goldenpig replied 12 years ago

Lynne, I agree. It looks like they counted scarves and belts but not jewelry/bags/tights.

Chewyspaghetti, I agree--great idea. I don't think you have to try them on if it's too hot...just take pictures of the outfits for future reference. Your own personal lookbook! :)

  • Joy replied 12 years ago

Using Bella's suggestion, I made up a few summer outfits using the yellow Halogen skirt and posted them today on Sveta's yellow skirt thread, page 2. However, they would also qualify, I think, for Bella's challenge of one item three ways. Should I post them or the link here? Do we need a new thread for posting challenge outfits? Actually, here is the link to the outfits to see if they qualify . Scroll down on page 2.

  • Mo replied 12 years ago

Well, I have played around with my red jeans, but have yet to wear them outside of the house. Maybe they count? I have several outfits ready for when the weather turns :)

  • rae replied 12 years ago

Ooh... this would be tough for me, since my casual and work looks are so different. However, I do like a challenge! I am 80% in. Must look at closet to see if this is even possible! lol

  • Lynne replied 12 years ago

Joy and Malina, these are wonderful!

I suggest you re-post in a new thread with "Bella's one item 3 ways" or similar in the title so nobody missed out on these.

  • goldenpig replied 12 years ago

Joy & Mo, you look fabulous! Now I've got both the yellow skirt and red jeans on my list--they look so versatile. Where did you get the red jeans?

  • chewyspaghetti replied 12 years ago

    Here is mine:
    http://youlookfab.com/welookfa.....-challenge

  • Mo replied 12 years ago

Sorry I didn't see this earlier, Goldenpig - the jeans are Ralph Lauren; I got them off eBay.
When I do my 14 I'm not sure if the red jeans would be versatile enough . . . but maybe!

  • Mo replied 12 years ago

I see that in the article their 6 new pieces are 2 tops, 2 shoes, a dress and pants, so I am going to attempt the same. I'm heading to bed but preliminarily have these items as my new pieces to try and remix:

    red jeans
    taupe turtleneck
    green & black tunic
    purple heeled oxfords
    cognac boots
    purple wrap dress

It will certainly be a learning experience for me, since I'm pretty bad at remixing, myself, lol!

I've also picked out 12 basics and again am pretty close to their model - 4 tops, 2 pants, 2 jackets, skirt, belt, heels, scarf. Since I don't really wear scarves or belts, it's another big leap.

This will be fun! Now to go to bed.

  • Marley replied 12 years ago

    I'm in!

  • Mamapicklejuice replied 12 years ago

Are we counting shoes? I hope so, that would help my meager wardrobe. heh.

  • Mo replied 12 years ago

MPJ, the original Redbook article included shoes, so I did, too. But I don't think anyone's got hard, fast rules about how to do it! :)

  • Jonesy replied 12 years ago

This sounds fun, though slightly daunting :)! I look forward to seeing everyone's pics!

  • Aida replied 12 years ago

    Made my list of items yesterday but probably won't have time to play until next weekend. I'm not including shoes or accessories in mine :}

  • goldenpig replied 12 years ago

I'm excited! I made a list of items and possible combos (on an Excel spreadsheet LOL) but I haven't had time to take pictures yet. This is going to be fun...and useful for forcing me to look at my clothes in creative ways. Also maybe it will cut down on my dithering time in the morning if I have a list of outfits to look at. :)

I did include shoes, belt, & scarf as in the original article, but feel free to do whatever you want!

  • Lisa replied 12 years ago

    Neat idea!

  • Aida replied 12 years ago

Whoops, forgot to add my link here: http://youlookfab.com/welookfa.....-challenge

    It's a fun challenge!
