What is your style and who are your celebrity style icons?

OK, since I kinda stuck my foot in my mouth in the other thread I started about your YLF style icons (didn't mean to cause hurt feelings by singling people out!), how about I try to redeem myself? Let's see if we can try this again but with famous style icons this time!

What is your style (if you have a catchphrase or adjectives, even better!) And who are your celebrity style icons and why? They can be present day or from the past, movie stars or other celebrities or famous people. Do they mesh with your style or are you drawn to celebrities with very different styles from your own?

Having gone through the process of figuring out my style with your help, it looks like I am a Demure Bombshell. Other phrases to describe me are classic elegant, retro ladylike, and boho luxe, with a touch of romantic whimsy.

I am not much of a celebrity watcher. But I did some internet searching and here is who I came up with. Interestingly, I think I tend to be drawn to brunettes who dress in a very ladylike way with a hefty dose of retro glamour.

I think my #1 celebrity style icon right now is Zooey Deschanel. She likes romantic, ladylike vintage dresses and flared skirts with waist definition. She's a bit quirky and not afraid of patterns. I could see her being a spokeswoman for Anthropologie which is one of my new favorite stores! I think my style is very similar to hers. Here's a cotton commercial she did that shows some of her outfits (I love her closet!):

and her "stylebook" (from the cotton advertising website):

Also I like "pinup girl" bombshells like Bettie Page and Dita von Teese--at least their more demure outfits anyways. I like 40-50's style with a lot of polka dots and red and glamour.

I also like a touch of boho luxe, like Liv Tyler. And French chic like Marion Cotillard and Audrey Tatou. And I am also drawn to brunette gamines like Audrey Hepburn and Natalie Portman.

Here are some pictures to illustrate their styles and how they mesh with mine. I think I would wear any of these outfits myself if I could!
1-3. Zooey Deschanel
4-5. Dita von Teese
6. Bettie Page
7-8. Liv Tyler
9-10. Natalie Portman
11-12. Audrey Hepburn
13-15. Audrey Tatou & Marion Cotillard

I am not much of a celebrity watcher either but I love Olivia Palermo style!

I'm not much of a celebrity watcher either, but I do love Cate Blanchett's style! She's in another universe from me, though, so I don't torture myself by trying to emulate her style.

This is not a celebrity at all, rather just a character on a show - but I wish I could wear the utilitarian-sexy-bad ass look of Gabrielle Anwar's character Fiona on Burn Notice. :D I'd have to be in sweltering Miami and blowing up bombs and such for it to be 'appropriate' but one can dream, right?
Half the time it's flowing gauzy dresses with chunky high heels and the other half it's tanks with denim and leather belt/boots/cuffs.
EDIT: heh, looks like I'm not the only one http://tooshallow.com/2010/06/.....rn-notice/

I really like Jennifer Aniston, Angelina Jolie and Reese Witherspoon styles. They are all classic in style, always have a nice fit with their outfits and always look put together. I also like Pippa Middleton's style, although I consider her style a tad more trendy.

I fluctuate between bombshell-type and Angelina Jolie on-the-go.

Even though I'm a bit older than the rest of the actresses that are my inspiration, my go to fashionista's are in no particular order:

    1. Audrey Hepburn
    2. Ginnifer Goodwin
    3. Rachel Bilson
    4. Reese Witherspoon
    5. Jean Seberg

  • Angie replied 12 years ago

Oh! How fun, Natalie. Great photos, ladies.

    In no particular order:

Audrey, Grace and Cate - *of course*

    Gwen Stefani and Kate Moss.

Ines de la Fressange and Vera Wang.

Here are some of my inspirational Angelina pics.

I suddenly understand why my entire wardrobe is black... ;)

I'm avant-garde classic. I love everything Charlize Theron wears. If only I were eight feet tall, I could wear them too.

Interesting. I tend to be inspired by characters' styles, and am digging the Mad Men and Pam Am styles. Awesome 60s fashion, and with my love for pencil skirts and tie neck blouses I definitely incorporate elements of those styles into my own.

In terms of inspiring real life fashionistas, I like Gwen Stefanie's edge style a lot, and I definitely take clues from all kinds of celebrities when I look through magazines, but there aren't really particular ones that I track.

  • Suz replied 12 years ago

I don't really follow celebs and don't have any celeb icons, but this thread is making me think that I should! I can see how paying closer attention to someone whose style and/or body type is similar could really clarify directions.

Loved that Jean Seberg clip, Krishnidoux. And the others, as well.

This is fun. I'm not a celebrity worshipper by any means (we're all stars, aren't we??), and most celebrities have pro stylists, but I like: Rachel Weisz: http://images.google.com/imgre.....#038;ty=54

    Jennifer Connolly:

    and Chantal Kreviazuk:

Of course I've seen some not-so-great moments for all these ladies, but we've all been there. ;)

Natalie, look at all that red! It's your go-to colour, girl :).

Sarah, you have Cate's fair colouring and high cheekbones, I can see you wearing a lot of the lighter, etheral colours that she wears.

Mo, you would rock any of the outfits pictured here.

KD, yay for some French style icons! I adore Carla Bruni's style and can't wait to see what she names her daughter. My cousins work in the French military and are often photographed with the Sarkorszky's so I am waiting for a first hand account.....

CGC, I can see Audrey and Ginnifer in your recent post.

BNM, funny revelation. She DOES wear a lot of black!

Angie, you and Gwen both rock tomato red like nobody's business; it must be your lovely clear skin and ash blonde hair.

Antje, characters in shows are often a way to get a pure essence of a style; they are styled in every shot we see!

  • Lynne replied 12 years ago

Helen, I love your take: we are all stars. IRL!

Suz, I could see you in any of those Jean Seaberg looks.

I love the styles of Cate Blanchet, wife of the French President and very new mum Carla Bruni, mum of 4 and hard-working royal Crown Princess Mary of Denmark, Kate Hudson, Kate Winslett, and Helen Mirren.

I think my style is natural, luxe, femine, and soft; I love natural fibres and soft colours, I value hand-feel, quality, and workmanship, and I prefer soft shapes and curved silhouettes.

  • nancylee replied 12 years ago

Sarah, we're not only style twins...we're also style icon twins! I also admire Cate Blanchett's style. She manages to be simple and classic with just enough creative boho surprise to make her looks interesting and original. In my dreams, I dress like her!

  • qfbrenda replied 12 years ago

I'm still working on defining my personal style, but so far I'm a mix of American Classic and Euro Chic. The Euro side of things have been appealing to me a lot lately.

I'm not much into following celebrities, but after looking around I really like the looks of Inès de la Fressange, Ines's daughter, Emmanuelle Alt, and Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy.

  • replied 12 years ago

I'm a character's wardrobe admirer. I like Joanie Holloway and Betty Draper from Mad Men and also Lily Ericson from How I Met your Mother. As for my style I like retro bombshell, ladylike and sometimes jeans and leather jacket student trolling with a laptop and a bike through campus:)

oh, i think these threads are fun (and today, i can use some fun 4 sure!). huh, while i can nail my style visually in a microsecond, words-wise it's something like ''Amelia Earhart crash-lands in a flock of Gibson Girls having tea'. antique, ultra-femme combined with vintage rugged.

that said, one lady i keep coming back to, style icon wise, is Carine Roitfeld.

i love how her style is so very bod-con yet her intelligence always takes center stage, and also adore her consistency. i strive to achieve that type of consistency myself.....easier said than done ; ) fun! steph

Oh hands down, I love the socialites of yesteryear: Babe Paley and Edith Bouvier Beale ('Little Edie' of Grey Gardens notoriety).

Babe Paley was really high fashion and dramatic, but her clothes were simple and unfussy to look at. Her clothes also never wore her.

Edie Beale was just out there, totally daring and eccentric.

Mo, I see a Halloween costume in the making for you! :D I love Fiona too. She's awesome.

I just wanted to say what a fun thread! I have no idea what "my" style is (I feel all over the board/magpie-ish and as if I like everything) and I have no celebrity icons. Perhaps if I did have a handle on my style I could find one! Ooops.
