What trends/items in your closet are you "so over"?

Just curious...what trends or items in your closet are you tiring of? Anything you used to wear often or were really excited about, but now you are moving away from? How long did it take for you to get sick of it?

For me, I am still really happy with the clothes I bought since joining YLF last summer. But I am starting to get a little tired of my animal print and brightly colored denim.

Sometimes when I see a lot of animal print, I start to think of older women who wear lots of makeup and jewelry (not to say that people who wear animal print are old, but it tends to skew a little old in my mind). It could also be that DH hates animal prints and it's rubbing off on me. I am glad I returned the leopard print faux fur jacket that I tried last winter, because I think I probably wouldn't have worn it very much. I have a PB blouse and animal print heels and ballet flats and belt and scarf, but they're all kind of underutilized.

As for colored jeans, I wear my red pair and white pairs a lot, but the bright cobalt and orange and turquoise ones haven't seen that much play. Again, it could be the teasing/negative reaction from hubs about my "clown pants" that is "coloring" my view of them. I haven't gotten rid of any of my animal print or colored jeans yet (because they're still in style and I could still totally see myself wearing them), but I'm planning to be more selective about new trends in the future, so I don't overdose on something I'll get tired of quickly!

What are you sick of or regret buying too much of, and why?

Natalie, I am really emjoying my wardrobe and given I have a lot of options, I can honestly say that I am not feeling 'over' anything in particular at the moment. I will think on it a bit more but I can't think of anything:)

  • Lyn D. replied 12 years ago

I am tired of "dressy dresses' that I wear only once or twice before they look dated and just take up space in my wardrobe! I always feel guilty for buying them and not getting good per wear value for my money.

  • replied 12 years ago

I have 2 or 3 long cardigans I bought the winter before last (2010), that I completely want to get rid of. I'm a little tired of the scarf with every outfit trend. I am also done with embellished tops and ruffles.Oh, I also have no use for bat wing tops. Now that I think about it, I am done with whatever it is that I bought from LOFT during winter 2010.

I don't own any colored skinny jeans since I have not found a pair I like. I only have one animal print top that I wear from time to time. I still wear and love my leopard and snakeskin pumps and flats.

I think getting bored with a trend is pretty common!

Tight bottoms and above the knee dresses/skirts

all too revealing for my body/age...

I don't mind either for casual/weekend attire (so far) but they are moving out of the work sphere. (I have a super casual work atmosphere, so it is me changing, not the dress code)

I like everything I have at the moment: pastels, brights, floral prints etc.

Even if the styles or colours fall out of favour (in the fashion world or the general public) then I will carry on wearing them and trying to re-invent the look to update it. I don't take much notice of the 'in' and 'out' lists in magazines I just pick up the trends I like and then wear them for as long as I love them.

I think this is because I don't like being dictated to by the so- called style bibles (maybe I'm rebelling against that).

  • Sveta replied 12 years ago

I think I got an overdose of tight skinnies for the last 2 years. Not that I have too many of them but I reach for them less and less recently.Shorter above the knee skirts is another one I am getting tired of. All this makes me crave midi skirts and slouchy trousers I guess!
I have some things which do not get that much wear not because I am tired of them but because they don't mesh with my style or lifestyle. Cardigans is one: I don't feel fab ina cardigan that often so I don't buy them anymore.

  • Claudia replied 12 years ago

The skinny jean/jegging tucked into tall boots and scarf ensemble. Hardly wore this look at all this past winter. I got tired of seeing it everywhere and bored putting it on (in past years it had been my absolute go-to look).

Short jackets and blazers. I am enjoying the longer cuts once again.

  • Laura replied 12 years ago

I actually got tired of dresses! Yes, for a short while, it's true. I've been wearing a lot of denim and hopefully, as the weather heats up, I'll be ready to get back to my dresses.

I think it would be normal to tire of bright denim - it's such a novelty and a big statement.

  • replied 12 years ago

I can't say I'm over them, but I am getting tired of denim and am ready to wear more skirts and dresses.

  • Meghan R replied 12 years ago

Anything with ruffles and pleats. I've been drawn to sleeker silhouettes lately.

  • Jaime replied 12 years ago

I am less into cardigans and more into jackets lately. And fed up with pintucked anything.

  • nancylee replied 12 years ago

A couple of years ago (before I discovered YLF) I went on a buying spree with cardigans. Now I have TONS of cardigans and I'm pretty tired of them. I much prefer blazers or just simple blouses these days.

  • ManidipaM replied 12 years ago

I used to be all for neutrals because they went with everything. And I don't mean just colours, but also flat smooth textures of neutral. Especially for pants. Think I'm done with that. I need a pair of black or charcoal pants, but I'm actively seeking out textures or subtle pattern (pinstripes, tweeds, slub, or at least the sheen of linen) this time around, I find. And keeping half an eye out for more colourful pants at a not-for-long price point (lest I tire of those soon too, like you, Natalie!)

Also, *ever* so over my old short graphic tees with the cutesy prints. I used to enjoy T-shirt wit; but these days I find I want more complex (layered, abstract) prints, if there must be any print at all. No more slogan tees for me, for a while (despite hubby's recent gift of an iPho T-shirt, which I think would have been worn far more a year ago!)

Another thing I'm about done with is flimsy slippers with no protection for the toes. I'd bought a bunch last year, as the mucky terrain here absolutely killed a quarter of my shoe wardrobe in a few months --- mea culpa, being unprepared with rainy-day shoes. But I now want serious support and protection, as well as good traction (also sick of skidding on marble floors and slick tiles).

Also, not feeling much love for short-sleeved anything these days, though I have a few oldies still. I now want either a very well-fitting sleeveless style or longer sleeves (at least 3/4).

Very tired of tight-fitting *anything*, as well. It better have a lot of design ease, or some stretch. That's benched several of my go-to shirts.

  • replied 12 years ago

I'm another one who is tired of cardigans and ready to embrace jackets.

  • Transcona Shannon replied 12 years ago

I used to be all over cascading cardigans but now I crave a bit more structure than that.

  • Astrid replied 12 years ago

These wasn't a trend, but I'm definitely tired of the longsleeved tees I used to wear all the time. I ordered some tees two weeks ago because they were on sale and I'm having to do laundry all the time at the moment to have something to wear everyday. Well guess what? I returned them all. There wasn't anything wrong with them, but they paled next to the button down shirt I tried at the same time. I guess I really need to search for blouses or woven tops instead of stretchy tops, even if fitting ones are hard to find.

  • Angie replied 12 years ago

    This was a fun read.

I am so over hard edge.

I haven't worn my Frye Rorys for 18 months, but still love all my Docs. See! Docs are timeless classics :)

I am a little sick of jeans. Good thing I have plenty of non-denim options.

When I look at my wardrobe, it's the same story. I continue to love all the stuff I paid a pretty penny for (and quite a lot of it is old), and I tire more quickly of the less expensive items.

  • modgrl replied 12 years ago

I'm over layers and layers of jewelry, cardigans, scarves, belts, cami's, etc. I still wear all of these things, just not all at once. I am getting rid of all of my fussy clothes, the ones with extra sparkles, ruffles, lacing, etc. I am looking at things that have cleaner lines and simpler shapes.

I think this is an important epiphany. It really resonates with me at this point in my style journey. In the last year and a half I have completely overhauled my wardrobe. I bought a lot of stuff!! And while I was doing it, I worried that as trends faded some of my new clothes would either go out of style or I would tire of them. This really speaks to shopping steadily, a little bit at a time, and keeping a smaller more streamlined wardrobe of quality items. I feel like now that I have the basis of a good wardrobe, I can just do some seasonal updates buying 1-2 things a month, rather than the complete overhaul that I experienced last year. Keeping the buying in check will also keep me from overdosing on any particular trend because I may only get 1-2 pieces of a trend.

I'm surprised to hear that you are over leopard/animal print. I think it was a smart move the return the faux fur jacket. That was such a divisive piece in your wardrobe. I resisted the animal trend last summer but then I really fell in love with it. I wear some kind of animal print accent or piece nearly every day. I have 3 animal dresses, two pairs of shoes, 2 blouses, one tank, a belt, 2 scarves and a bag. All of these things get worn except the belt because I am kind of over belts. I'm on the look out for the perfect animal clutch now.

  • MNsara replied 12 years ago

Great question, Natalie! I *have* noticed my gravitating away from certain trends and I've been wondering why: a few years older? a few pounds added? just need variety? for whatever reason I've been avoiding and clearing out these:

** any true skinnies. I'm still okay with narrow straights, but I'm more balanced with a bit of extra width around the ankle. Plus its limiting to always cover my rear and half of my thighs!

** very cropped toppers. Even with dresses I'm liking the hem to hit closer to my waist.

** cascading cardis. No more flowy cardis for me (at least for now ;-)

** above the knee dresses. But I also did not do the leggings under dresses last summer and I'm not sure why. This could leave me with very few dress optins for the summer. . .

** too many layers of clothing. I can do a topper over something, but a shirt under AND topper over that something, hmmm, I'm don't think so. . .

** extra zippers and studs on clothes or accessories. . .

I really think I have a limited attention span and should make sure I don't go overboard for ANY trend!

  • velvetychocolate replied 12 years ago

No more ruffles. No more cardigans either. I have one animal print blouse that I still like, but I don't think I'll be adding more animal print, unless it's maybe a belt or perhaps shoes.

Oh, and I'm kind of tired of slouchy, hobo-ish bags. Prefer something a bit smaller and more structured.

  • Tanya replied 12 years ago

Another no more cardigans here. I will wear the ones that I have as I own plenty of them but I will certainly not add new ones. I am really into lighweight jackets now.

Also, I still like them, but I will likely not be adding more knitted tops, I am looking for wovens at the moment.

And like Modgirl, I am also over too many layers and accessories ( e.g. blouse +cardi + belt over it plus necklace and a flower pin) - simpler lines is what calls to me at the moment.

  • anne replied 12 years ago

I am not drawn to a 50's style dress (fit and flare) that I bought 4 years ago.
There is another dress that is functionally useful (full skirt and non iron) that is a favourite of Angie's but I have never liked (not really answering the question)

Apart from that I am either happy, or just need to replace because things are worn out. I don't mind my 4 years old denim skirt, but if I get another one I want one without a front zip.

  • rachylou replied 12 years ago

    I'm tired of:

    - My shoes! I hate them all.
    - This quilted jacket that was fab in the suburbs and... suburban in the city.
    - My cardigans as well. They're very "twin set-y." What? Am I the host of a daytime talk show?
    - My long-sleeved tees. They keep me warm, but I don't wanna be an REI refugee anymore!

  • Sarah A replied 12 years ago

hmmm... i think i am over the cascading cardi as well. however i will still be wearing mine because i am not over citron and that is the only citron colored piece i own and i have just put myself on SYC for May Madness. Also mainly over cardigans in general, i like more structure. Also over my square toe tall black boots, they just look dated to me so i have hardly worn them this year. I have bought a lot since joining YLF 4 months ago so I think my closet is pretty honed in to where I am right now on my style journey.

  • Elly replied 12 years ago

Mine isn't so much a style I'm tired of, although I do have some borderline "tired" and "dated" flutter sleeves and ruffles hiding in my closet.

Mostly it is just that my clothes are tired . . . . with the exception of new interview gear and a few lovely hand me downs and gifts my closet is heavily loaded down with 3 year old t-shirts and knit tops that are sad, at this point. It isn't just me getting tired of them (been there done that) but they are shabby at this point. I can't get hired on somewhere fast enough at this point, so I feel comfortable spending a little money to refresh things. That said, I'm pretty sure I'm just going to have to break down and spend it already!

I'm tired of stretched out necklines, stretched out undies, bras not fitting, and the style of the jeans that I can fit locally. I'm so tired of worn out gear and PJs too! If I never see another oversized hoodie it will not be too soon.

  • Jamie replied 12 years ago

I'm so over cardigans and twin sets. I've weeded out quite a few over the last few months. I have a few that I still wear, but I'm drawn more to blouses, shirts, and jackets now instead. I'm also done with the trend of wearing a belted cardigan over a sheath dress. And while I'm at it, months ago I started to steer clear of anything that is overly embellished -- bows, flowers, ruffles, etc. I much prefer cleaner lines and a sleeker silhouette.

  • Jonesy replied 12 years ago

Cardigans, the color brown (I had lots of brown stuff that I had accumulated over the years, thinking it was a solid neutral, but I've realized that I hate brown!), A-line skirts (I've realized I just don't feel like me when I wear them), ladylike blouses (ditto).

  • Mo replied 12 years ago

I'm with Jonesy on the brown! I had quite a bit, and I don't think it's bad on me, it just doesn't feel as chic as the black I have been replacing it with.
I'm also over snug fitting knit shirts. I was going to post about whether they are passe these days or if it's just a personal thing of mine. This could be coinciding with my changing shape - my waist is now half an inch bigger while the hips are half an inch smaller than they were. They are great for layering under jackets in cool weather, but alone over jeans they just look wrong to me now. I'm craving more fluidity and loose movement in my tops.
As for most of the other trends mentioned, I, like Rita, bought slowly and steadily through the last year and a half, so I didn't acquire too much of any one trend at a time. That is actually a purposeful part of my wardrobe plan, not just a happy accident. So I only have 2 animal print tops (a woven and a knit), 2 waterfall cardis (a short and a long sleeved), 2 colored jeans (red and white), etc. And incidentally, I still love all of the above, perhaps because I didn't oversaturate myself with them!

  • ironkurtin replied 12 years ago

I don't really follow trends, so I guess it's more, what items do I have a ton of that i don't reach for so much? I was in mad love with longer shirt-tunic-dresses in white last year, but I'm not going for them so much this season. I don't know why.

  • lyn* replied 12 years ago

I"m so over body tight stuff. UGH.

And stuff without cute prints. :)

  • christieanne replied 12 years ago

I don't have a ton of trends in my closet (have become such a slow adapter over last two years - no time to follow them or even shop!) that maybe it's good thing as I can't find much to be remorseful about lol.

I used to wear a lot of cropped jackets and kept just a few after closet purge but now I think they might be wrong for me in general. I am liking a jacket with a little length to the hip.

Doubt I will ever give up cardigans but I don't like them worn as twin set at all. Searching for a way to make this classic modern but not seeing much hope.

Black as my neutral. I dare say I own more black pants than half of you (if we combined all of your closets) since I wore nothing but black pants six days a week for last two and half years. And they got dirty after one wear (remodeling, warehouse white duct film) so I stocked up big time. I will always love black but I kind of hate black pants.

  • MsMary replied 12 years ago

I'm also over cardigans. Last year I couldn't buy enough of them, and this year I haven't worn them much at all. Turns out I don't feel quite "dressed" for the office any more if I'm wearing a cardi and not a jacket.

Also over daily wearing of scarves. It seemed so exciting and fashiony when I was new at YLF but now it feels like a bit much for me.

  • rae replied 12 years ago

I used to love my pencil skirts, but like Lyn I now find them a little too constricting. I still like how they look, but I like my knit dresses with the tapered skirts much more.

  • Diana replied 12 years ago

Not feeling the cardigans as much these days although I still wear the handknit ones and the floaty ones. But the plain, solid-colored, boring ones? Would rather wear a jacket.

I'm also not in love with the jersey skirts I used to wear all the time in the summer. Still wearing them as loungewear but they don't leave the house much any more.

Also kind of over tight-fitting tops. Once in a while they're useful (like with slouchy bottoms) but mostly I'm preferring things that are loose in the bust these days. ETA: I think I need to do another purge and get rid of some of these tops. I have too many.

I'm preferring my slim/straight leg denim tucked into boots rather than skinnies/jeggings these days as well.

I'm getting back INTO lots of black and dark neutrals (i.e. blacks, greys, dark moody taupey colors, but still no brown, beige, or white), although I still love my colors. But I have been loving grey and black lately.

  • Suz replied 12 years ago

Ruffles, and extra detailing, generally. I am looking for cleaner lines on the whole...despite having bought some madly detailed pieces last winter in my effort to amp up the "artiness" quotient. Now I am sorry. It's not me. Except in tiny doses, i.e. .perhaps in some jewelry or on footwear or such.

Cascading cardis...except the one that Nancylee sent me, because it is controlled and more structured than most.

Like Angie, I find that I don't fall out of love with the higher priced items, no matter how old they are. I tend to fall out of love with the cheaper stuff, unless we are talking about a solid basic fortuitously discovered at an unusually low price.

  • keruchina replied 12 years ago

I must be the outlier here because you will have to pry my cardigans out of my cold, dead hands! They are still my go to topper.

Even though I own some jackets that I like, I tend to feel a bit too polished in them, which doesn't fit in my casual grad student settings.

  • catgirl replied 12 years ago

Haven't read the other comments yet - I am so pressed for time this week. I am totally over my cardigans. At least the plain, crewneck ones. I don't think I pulled them out once this winter!

  • bj1111 replied 12 years ago

twinsets. i adored then sick. then after i discoved my bb maroon set fraying at the neck and an abortive trip to replace, i thought, " ehh, just skip it."

no doubt i will cycle back to them. but i'm having too much jacket fun.

  • replied 12 years ago

Like everyone else, my long cardigans have been neglected :( Some did not make it out all winter.

I found I very rarely wore my short skirt/tights/boots uniform this winter. I'm waiting to see if the same thing happens with my short summer skirts...

  • Amy replied 12 years ago

This thread is making me afraid to wear anything--except, it's too cold outside to go nekkid.

I love my cardigans, ruffly tops, scarves, the color brown..and I just bought fabric to make colored pants. Argh :D

The only thing I'm "over" trying any more is skinny pants. I bought 2 pairs in a effort to adopt this trend, but never felt comfortable in them. I like regular old trousers...when they fit, anyway!

  • krishnidoux replied 12 years ago

Bright colour blocking! Yes, I admit, tired of it right away. I have some new bright coloured items I will put in consignment next week.

  • goldenpig replied 12 years ago

Interesting! A lot of people are over the ruffles, cardigans (both twinsets and cascading long cardigans) and skinnies. I admit I went through a cardigan twinset purge when I first joined YLF, but then missed some of them and now I have bought some replacements. I wear my red cascading cardigan a lot actually. And I do wear skinny jeans a lot. And I still love ruffles (maybe not to excess anymore, but I love a bit of ruffle trim, because it's so ladylike). So maybe I'm a little behind the times since I just joined and started wearing these trends this year, I haven't had enough time to get sick of them yet? Also, I think my style tends to be more ALGO than minimal so I still like some interesting details. I did get rid of a couple of old super ruffly/embellished Anthro tops though. I think my style is evolving to become ALGO through mixing textures and patterns rather than embellishments.

I am thinking of more reasons why I'm not as excited about animal print and colored denim. First is that when DH hates certain pieces of clothing on me, it limits my enthusiasm for wearing it if I can't wear it around him or he teases me about my clothes (like those H&M floral pants). He's generally supportive and compliments me on most of my wardrobe, but if there's stuff he hates, he definitely lets me know about it!

Also, some of my skinny jeans are really digging into my muffin top--I think I've gained about 4-5 lb and some of my jeans are getting tight. :( I've been doing the Jillian Michaels 30-day shred to try to combat this.

And I don't mind animal print in small doses (like my leopard heels or necklace), I just am less enamored of the big swaths of animal print like coats and dresses. Which is kind of ironic because I was recently pining over the Banana Republic safari collection and wore one of my H&M safari dresses! Maybe I'd rather be on safari than in the safari!

I agree with MaryK about being "over" scarves too. I feel like I never really got into them, but I bought a bunch when I joined YLF because everyone seemed to be sporting them and they are a great way to "finish" an outfit. But I'm finding that they're kind of fussy and not my style and hard to integrate into my lifestyle (kind of hard to do procedures when you're wearing a scarf). So scarves are relative orphans in my wardrobe. When I wear them I kinda feel like I'm "trying too hard" (like in Angie's blog post).

And Angie is right about the higher priced statement pieces being keepers. I already posted in MaryK's thread, but investment pieces like my Kate Spade trench and Frye boots are keepers and I don't think I'll ever get tired of them!

  • Amy replied 12 years ago

I understand where you're coming from, GP. My husband still hasn't grown to appreciate my short hairstyle, so right now, I'm waffling between keeping it short because I like it, and wearing it in a slightly longer style that both he and I will appreciate.

I also am new to dressing better, so I'm still playing catch up with some trends that are falling by the wayside, lol.

  • Suz replied 12 years ago

LOL, GP: "rather be on safari than IN safari."

  • annagybe replied 12 years ago

I had to laugh at Rachylou's REI refugee. That's most of Seattle. I think I may be over my JBrand Houlihans (skinny cargos). I have them in a washed olive and sateen khaki. Jenava and I gave them a season pass during my recent closet purge.

  • Marley replied 12 years ago

"Statement" jewelry. Hats. Skinny jeans with boots and tunic tops. Never went for the cascading cardi look or the cardigan sweater sets - so maybe I should give them a try now! LOL!

  • Donna replied 12 years ago

Ruffles and heels that are too high to be comfortable.

I'm easily seduced by a pretty shoe and I have to keep reminding myself that anything over about 2 3/4" is not going to be a running around shoe for me. I'm still wearing the things I have with ruffles but a while back I stopped buying any more of them.

  • Kari replied 12 years ago

My boyfriend is exactly the same way about animal print and textures. He says they remind him of some of his older relatives who dressed kind of "tacky" - bright red lipstick, sparkly sequins/rhinestones, animal print. That's OK. I still like it, but I haven't and do not go overboard.

I'm feeling "over" boots and jackets, but that's a seasonal thing right now as last summer was sooo late and coming and very short, followed by a very cold and drizzly year. I'm so grateful for the sunny days when I don't have to layer to here and back! Come fall I'll happily put them back on.

I'm feeling "over" earthy shades, grays, browns, muted eggplant and olive green. I'm craving brights!

I'm over skinny jeans. I'm taking a vacation from cardigans though I don't think I've given them up entirely - just backed away a bit. I'm not as interested in brooches as I was a few months ago, especially large silk floral pins.

I'm going through a phase of being "off" pearls but am sure I'll come around to them again.

  • jen replied 12 years ago

I'm over buying dressy dresses for a life I don't have!

  • replied 12 years ago

Natalie, I had to think about this ALL day and now I am finally ready to comment (since I've read all the answers, lol)!

Ahem. As for my own closet, I'm over knit draped neck tops. I like them on someone with some curves, but they stretch out and reveal my bony upper chest. I recently ironed interfacing on the underside of the necklines of mine to try to combat this. I'm over the T-shirt +scarf as an every. single. day. outfit for me. So glad I only have maybe half a dozen scarves and I don't see any more that are calling my name.

I gave my grey cascading cardi to my daughter last winter because I was favoring blazers, but now that it's summer, I'm borrowing back some bright cropped cardis that had found their way into her closet. For some reason I prefer cardis with a skirt (and I wear a lot of those in the summer) and blazers with jeans. A blazer + skirt can look 'corporate gone wrong' on me really fast. I'm also over big poufy or butterfly sleeves, low scooped necklines, and peter pan collars.

Great post, thanks for making me think about this!

  • Joy replied 12 years ago

I'm still loving everything in the closet. I do go in phases where I may not wear something as much but then rediscover it. Lately this has been the cascading cardigans. I'm looking forward to less jeans and more skirts this summer.

  • CocoLion replied 12 years ago

    Skinny cargos.
    Skinny motos.

And I am nearing being fully saturated with super skinny jeans in general. But I cling a bit because I have a HUGE investment in this trend.

Also feeling that way about colored skinnies... I might just be saturated. I mean, this trend is so EVERYWHERE. I'm glad I only purchased one premium pair of colored skinnies, the rest have all been $70 and under.

  • Mander replied 12 years ago

I haven't really liked many of the trends lately, so I've just been ignoring them. But I am also tired of the cascading cardigan, tapered skinny jeans, and sequins/embellishment on just about everything. To be fair, I didn't like any of these much to start with, but I think the big voluminous cardigans and tapered jeans look terrible on someone with a figure like mine to start with, and it bugs me that the plus-size retailers have seemingly stocked nothing but these unflattering trends for so long.

I'm also generally sick of wearing jeans every.single.day, my enormous collection of black shirts, and acrylic sweaters. I like to have a plain black cardigan in my wardrobe for warmth purposes, but I am sick of the ones I have. They are a bit elderly and shabby looking. And as much as I love and wear turquoise and variations on turquoise, I'd kind of like some more things in complimentary colors. And solids. 90% of my wardrobe is a solid color -- I'd like some more patterns with mixed colors, not just black and white.

  • marianna replied 12 years ago

Totally over cropped cardigans. I haven't worn them since last year and I have no desire to.

I'm also over my "novelty" ballet flats. I went through a phase where I bought tons of bright colors. Honestly, now I love my investment nude flats the most.

Oh, gosh, I feel like such a loser. All my favorites have been mentioned here--cascading cardigans, cardigans in general, animal print, and scarves. Oh please somebody tell me that scarves are still okay! I love voluptuousness in soft knit fabrics and that's why I loved the cascading cardigans and scarves. (I didn't even mean to use the past tense there... but isn't it funny how you can love something until somebody says "I am so over ___" and then you realize that maybe you've been overdoing it too?) I think light airy scarves are lovely in summer; t-shirts are so boring on their own and tossing a scarf on makes it look like you've made an effort, in no time flat. There, I've talked myself back into them. :)

I have way too many pairs of jeans because I keep looking for The. Perfect. Pair. I mean, I have WAY too many pairs. It's ridiculous. And then when I do find the perfect pair (I do have one perfect pair that looks awesome with heels--still looking for one to wear with flats), I don't wear them because they're so perfect that I know I'd be devastated if I poured coffee or bleach all over myself (something that has never happened, ever), so I keep looking for a back-up pair.... and then I end up with all these jeans that aren't quite right.

    Le sigh.

lamireille, no worries! I think people were merely talking about what they were over in their own closets, not what was out of date in general. I think when we overdo something or just get a little bored with it, we make shifts, but that doesn't mean it's not a great look for someone else! I'll never be over scarves or cardigans, though how I wear them and how much I wear them shifts. Right now, I'm "over" my hyper-colorful cardigans and am shifting to neutrals. But there are others on the forum who are over neutrals and are shifting to brights!

    Yes, what Liz wrote.

Don't worry lamireille! Everyone is different! I just bought my first cascading cardigan (red) not too long ago and am wearing it a lot! I second what Liz said!

    1. Skinnies. I wore my white ones a lot over the winter so I think that's why. I still like the look of them with the right outfit on others though. I don't wear jeans in the summer so I may fall back in love come fall.

    2. Ruffles. I've always felt like a fat she-pirate in them so I'm secretly relieved to let this one go.

    3. Delicate jewelry. I find myself leaning more and more towards really bold/industrial/ethnic statement pieces.

Thank you, Liz, Claudia, and goldenpig! Not only do I feel better about my scarves and cascading sweaters now, I'll feel less out-of-date about wearing them after Liz's explanation. :)
