WIW 6/22-8/30: My First Trimester Lookbook

This is way overdue, but I had promised several months ago that I'd post a collection of my first-trimester outfits. I've never posted so many outfits all together, but it's kind of a fun retrospective of my style! I may not look very pregnant in most of these, but I actually was trying very hard to minimize the bump, because I wanted to wait till second trimester to announce the pregnancy.

I only gained about 4-5 lb, but it was all in my tummy, and it was fairly noticeable if I let it all hang out (like in #44!). I learned that being an apple and having learned to dress my shape over the past year with the help of YLF was useful, because I could just use the same apple-minimizing tricks to hide the bump.

I wore a lot of structured sheath dresses and pencil and other high-waisted A line skirts to hide the bulge. And I used fitted and nipped waist jackets and lots of belting to define the natural waist and make me look slimmer (nobody expects a pregnant woman to wear belts). And I also used tunics, billowy blouses and ponchos to skim over the bump, which was new for me as I typically did not do much waist surrender before this. Both strategies worked pretty well.

The wrap and draped jersey dresses were not quite as good at hiding the bump though...as I found out later, #46 apparently caused some gossiping amongst my mom friends at a kid's birthday party ("Is she or isn't she?") but nobody dared to ask. I was lucky that several of my pants still fit through the first trimester, so I didn't have to resort to the rubber band trick or Bella bands. But I typically wear skirts and dresses much more anyways, and found that for me, they were more forgiving of a growing tummy.

I made it to week 13 before being "outed" by one of the nurses at work. I almost made it to the end of first trimester without revealing my secret! I think the trick to hiding a pregnancy (besides the figure flattery tips I listed above) is to avoid using empire waists and maternity clothes for as long as you can...keep wearing your usual clothes and slip in a few new looser/larger pieces here and there, so it doesn't seem like you're switching to a whole new (maternity) wardrobe all of a sudden. Plus you don't want to buy maternity clothes too early, because they won't fit you later...I bought a pair of white maternity jeans in first trimester but then when I pulled them out in 2nd trimester, they were now too tight!

Anyways, hope this is helpful to all the pregnant YLF'ers out there. I know I really wished I had more info on how to dress during pregnancy, so I'm hoping this will be useful! And even if you're not pregnant, you can have fun analyzing my style for me! (And maybe you guys can post a lookbook of your own style!) Thanks for looking and commenting (and wading through this huge pile of pics)! Stay tuned for the 2nd trimester lookbook!

You look so cute in all the pics! And your little ones are adorable :) I love the way you have used your jackets and toppers. I wish I was this fashionable when I was pregnant - I was too busy stuffing myself and then puking it all out in my first trimester. All the best fashionable momma!

  • Karie replied 11 years ago

You certainly do know how to put together an outfit! And your children are the cutest!

And #43 and #44 were taken on the same day?? WOW! I am going to have to apply the concept of structure and waist definition to my everyday dressing!

  • sarah replied 11 years ago

Wow, you look so great! All I can say it that I wish I'd discovered wrap dresses when I was pregnant!!!!!!!

  • Krista replied 11 years ago

Natalie, this lookbook is gorgeous! You are gorgeous! Your outfits are gorgeous!

I also appreciated the insights you shared about dressing while pregnant. I'm not pregnant, but maybe one day, and it's so neat to read your observations.

Also, I think we have a very similar style - just wondering if you've named your style like Rae and Una with UWP? I am looking for a label to work with to guide me when shopping other than "matchy-matchy, sophisticated, feminine, etc., etc." I need something simple to keep me focused!

Oh my gosh, you are so stylish mama! I loved looking through these. Love them all but #33 caught my eye because it reminds me of Snow White. But a super stylish and cute Snow White, I love it!

  • cobaltblue replied 11 years ago

Krista, I think Natalie describes herself as a Demure Bombshell.

I love all of these! I wish I had a good frock collection. It's hard for me because I don't like wearing sleeveless styles or showing cleavage. It's easy to find one or the other but hard to get both in one garment.

I still love your orange slice purse a lt, so it was fun to see it.

Lots of great inspiration here. I don't think I took any first trimester outfit pictures! You've convinced me to do much better this tri.

What a wonderful bag collection you have. I did not notice the tummy but the BAGS, that is another story.

  • Suz replied 11 years ago

What an amazing series of outfits! You have an unbelievably gorgeous wardrobe (boy would I love to come play in your closet!) and you look fantastic every day!

Especially love 3, 21, 33, 47 - but all are amazing, and your tips on dressing for pregnancy will be so helpful to our other pregnant members.

    Cool

This is so interesting. In most of these outfits you don't look pregnant. The only outfit where you look pregnant is #44.

    You have great style Natalie. These are my faves: 2, 3, 6, 9, 16 (that one really stands out!), 17, 21, 25, 31 (another super cool outfit), 34, 36, 42, 44, 45 (that one's a repeat of #3 isn't it), 46, 47, 48, 53 and 55.

I think you could create a maternity style book based on these! Or maybe have one made up just for your family. You newest family member could see itself being worn by you, pre-birth. :-)

Thank you for this stunning compilation, Natalie! I didn't have a chance to comment on all your WIWs lately, but each time you posted a new one I sighed with delight. You have looked nothing but gorgeous, super stylish, elegant and fab. I love the variety of colours and silhouettes, your sense of style and adventure is awesome, and your tips on how to dress while pregnant are invaluable.

So fashionable! I showed my BF #43 and #44 and he didn't believe they were taken the same day. Like, literally could not wrap his head around it. Who would have thought belts would be a pregnant lady's friend?
Can't wait to see the 2nd trimester lookbook.

Thanks Nidhi! I'm sorry you suffered from morning sickness. I was really lucky and didn't have any this time, and very mild with the first two. I did do the stuffing my face and sleeping a lot though!

    Karie, thanks!

Sarah, I love wrap dresses too. I'm glad I've been able to continue to wear my old ones into pregnancy. But I found that I do better with faux wrap dresses though...less worry about wardrobe malfunctions!

Krista, I'm excited that we have similar style! Would love to see more of your WIW's!
My primary style persona is Demure Bombshell. I also consider myself Retro Ladylike with a bit of Boho Luxe thrown in...I like 40's/50's looks and matchy matchy and I also like boho-type patterns, but not the usual casual boho look. Although I know Angie doesn't consider me very Bombshell or Retro or Boho...she thinks I'm more Modern Classic, which may be true, but I don't really identify with that term (too generic for me) and it doesn't help me shop.
Here's the post where I was hashing out my style persona with YLF help:
    http://goldenpig.lookfab.com/p.....on-persona
And here's my style rubric--this does help me analyze/pick my outfits...they feel more "me" if they hit all five:
    Color or contrast
    Matchy Matchy
    Patterned
    Fitted
    Flair
    http://goldenpig.lookfab.com/p.....d-new-list

RunnerRae, how fun! I never thought about Snow White but I guess the blue and yellow does match her dress!

Cobaltblue, I'm glad you're going to post more this trimester! Can't wait to see! And yes, the orange slice purse is one of my faves too!

Deb, Suz and Kiwichick, and Inge thanks for the compliments!

Denise, thanks! A fashion photobook would be a fun idea...maybe I will do that for a keepsake!

Atlantia, I know I can hardly believe it myself. In fact when I was posting these I thought, hmm, these don't really look like maternity photos, but then that one pic was so fun to add in to throw people for a loop!

Wonderful pics! You look amazing in all of them.

    Hi GPig --

That 43/44 "same day, different outfit" shot is definitely a shocker and proof that cut, color +/- prints that keep the eye moving are a great way to draw attention away from one's midsection (pregnant or not)!

It's nice to see your use of color and cut on display in one spot. Sounds like your energy level is high and you've been enjoying the challenge of dressing professionally with a changing shape -- hope the next ~ 6 months bring more of the same.

Wow, wow, wow, I have never gotten to see so many fab outfits all together before! #38 is my favorite - your daughter looks so happy!
