WIW 8/31 to volunteer for Dress for Success (my first time!)

I've been with YLF for one year now and it has changed my life for the better in so many ways (besides upgrading my clothes)! I've already met several of you in person and I feel like I "know" so many more of you and consider you all my friends. This is such a warm and inspiring community!

I've posted several times before about trying to reconcile my newfound interest in fashion with worrying whether it is too vain or frivolous to keep taking pictures of myself and spending so much time obsessing about something so superficial as clothes and my appearance. Here is the most recent thread I posted about it:
http://youlookfab.com/welookfa.....-obsession

As a result of that thread, I decided to look into volunteering for Dress for Success, as Claire has written several times about her experiences volunteering there and I was really inspired by her posts:
http://youlookfab.com/welookfa.....ss-phoenix
http://youlookfab.com/welookfa.....fs-verbose
I figured this would be the perfect way to put my newly-learned fashion skills to good use and not feel guilty about it anymore!

I'm sure you know about Dress for Success already because of Claire, but in case you don't, they provide donated suits and business clothes, shoes and accessories to underprivileged women who are actively looking for work or starting a new job. They also provide career counseling sevices and mentoring and educational talks/workshops. They rely mostly on volunteers to help with all of these services so it's not just personal shopping that they need help with.
Here is the DFS website:
http://www.dressforsuccess.org/

Earlier this month I went to a DFS volunteer orientation meeting. Since I had taken this week off for the kids' first week of school (kindergarten and preschool!) I was able to spare an afternoon to do my first volunteer shift (I had to have the nanny pick the kids up from school, but it wasn't their first day so I figured it was OK).

I wore my MaryK swap jacket, black H&M tank, black pencil skirt, WHBM necklace, red Clark pumps and red Fossil bag. I already posted this outfit a couple of weeks ago but I thought it would be appropriate for the occasion. And I can't believe I still fit into this pencil skirt even in my 2nd trimester so I'm just enjoying it while I still can!

I worked with two clients today--normally they would have 3-4 clients over the 2 hours, but since it was my first day it was great to have the extra time, since I was still trying to figure out how it works and the first client was late. They both agreed to let me take pics to share! I forgot to take pics of the "store", but you can sort of see it in the background. Not as super fancy as Claire's Phoenix branch, but still very nice!

The first client was petite and size 0. We really didn't have much stock in that small of a size so we ended up with a size 2 chocolate brown skirt suit. I helped her pick a striped button down blouse with teal, olive and brown pinstripes and a green glass bead necklace, and a pair of Mary Jane pumps and an olive green and gold patterned scarf that she can wear with solid tops. She also picked a D&G handbag. She looked really sharp and professional!

The second client said she did not want a suit but was looking for slacks and a nice shirt. She was a pear, so the pants that fit her thighs were all too loose in the waist. I found some charcoal trousers that fit really nicely in the legs so I added a burgundy croc texture belt to cinch in the waist. I found her a button down blouse with French blue, grey and raspberry colored stripes and she really liked it! Then a purple beaded Y necklace and some purple ballet flats (she walks a lot so she didn't want heels). And a burgundy handbag. I also found her a lilac solid color blouse and a eggplant colored patterned scarf so she would have another option. She was really happy with her outfit and told me I have a good eye, which was a really nice compliment.

I talked with both of them throughout, asking them about their job plans and resume, asking them mock interview questions and coaching them on how to respond to questions, tips on nonverbal presentation, how to appear more confident and professional, etc. This counseling is supposed to be part of the personal shopping appointment, so it's not just a "shopping trip" but keeps things focused on the job search and their future.

But I could tell that both of them appeared much more confident with nice business attire on! Their demeanor and the way they carried themselves changed. Clothes do play a big part in our confidence and presentation, and first impressions do count for a lot especially for interviews! So fashion is really important after all, and I'm glad I was able to share what I've learned and finally do some good with it!

I really have Angie and you all to thank for giving me the confidence to try something like this, which is so outside my comfort zone. If you had told me a year (or even a few months ago) that I would be shopping for and dressing other people, I would have thought you were crazy! I don't even feel like I have a handle on shopping for myself yet! And I'm kind of an introvert and don't really like to volunteer for things if I don't feel like I'm an expert or the most qualified. But with the confidence I've gained from YLF and revamping my entire wardrobe pretty much from scratch, I learned that sometimes you have to just jump in and do things! So I'm really happy I took a chance and conquered my fears!

I've even volunteered to be a room parent at DD's school, which is something I never would have done before either (I hate public speaking and I'm not an "outgoing leader" type). First meeting was today as well. Thankfully three other moms signed up, so I don't have to be the lead parent, but I'm still glad I'm pushing my comfort boundaries. Just like I did with fashion!

Anyways, thanks for reading and I hope if any of you are motivated, you will look into volunteering at DFS too! (I won't be able to volunteer every week like Claire or Angie, but I think every 1-2 months or so will fit into my schedule, and they appreciate any help they can get). And they can always use more clothes, shoes, purse, scarf and jewelry donations too--all sizes, so consider donating your purged wardrobe items to DFS. Thanks Claire for spreading the word about DFS and thanks Angie and YLF for giving me the confidence and fashion know-how to become a personal shopper for them! This was so much fun! I can't wait to do it again!

What a wonderful way to use your creativity and love of fashion. My hat's off to you for finding the time to volunteer.

P.s. you look amazing in that pencil skirt.

I'm impressed that you found time to do this, too. I'm sure you were a great help to those two women and they look great. What a worthwhile thing to do!

So awesome! I love how you are spreading the fashion how-tos. That's it, I am writing to DFS right now - I have wanted to do it for some time, but you have inspired me to get up and go! Your clients look amazing!!

Way to go Natalie! You look fabulous and now you can help others look fabulous! I'm so happy for you.

Natalie, it's wonderful that your'e finding time to do this, especially when you're a working mom. Wow, I'm impressed. And your "clients" (? is that what you call them?) look terrific. Your outfit is SUPER fab.

It's wonderful that you're volunteering & loving it! You & the two clients you styled look great! I'm also an introvert who doesn't necessarily feel comfortable volunteering outside of my areas of expertise. Recently, I began volunteering too, & I love it too! We prepare & serve meals for the homeless, & I'm volunteering at a community garden growing food for a local food bank. I am by no means great in the kitchen, or at serving food, or in the garden, but it's so rewarding & I'm learning that I don't have to be perfect to have fun & help people.

Yay, Rae! I'm so glad you're going to volunteer too! I know you'd be really good at personal shopping, especially since it's going to be your future career!

I still feel kind of like a shopping amateur--I still get overwhelmed in stores sometimes, return most of what I buy, and always come up empty-handed whenever I've tried to thrift. I've never ever shopped for anybody else, so I was kind of nervous that I wouldn't be able to dress someone else especially with different sizes/shapes than me in such a short time. But I jumped in and tried it anyways and it felt really great to help someone else feel good about themselves!

Also, l realized that the DFS outfits don't have to be YLF perfect in terms of fit--the suit was slightly too big and the pants waist was too loose--but sometimes you just have to make do with what's available in their size and within the time constraints. And as long as the client is happy and feels confident in the outfit, that's what matters! It's a good lesson in letting go of some of my perfectionist tendencies!

Megan, I totally agree--it was another great lesson (and confidence booster for me) that as long as you have a willingness to help, you don't have to be an expert to be a volunteer! It's really fun!

I know with my busy schedule with work and the kids I'm not going to be able to do this as much as I'd like, but I think they appreciate any time people can give, no matter how often.

Natalie, what an exciting development. And how generous of you to put your new skills to work to help others. I'm sure your clients appreciated it. And WOW, did you ever look fab!!

I'm so impressed that you have found a way to do this. It's a great way to use your passion to make the world a happier place. And it is so in the YLF spirit!!

We don't have a DFS in Kingston, or I'd be doing this, too. I do feel a bit better, however, that all unsold items at the place I consign are donated to charities that raise money for a woman's shelter.

Natalie, as a fellow introvert I know how difficult it can be to push yourself out of your comfort zone. It's wonderful you are doing something so helpful and that makes good use of your new fashion sense. My job this past year was in Human Resources, and it really struck me how important presentation is when you go in for that first interview- I think management always offered better starting salaries to those who were more polished.

I love your outfit with the black pencil skirt and jacket- way to model polish and style and for your clients!

  • rae replied 11 years ago

You are so cool to just jump right in and do things - I really identified with what you said about not wanting to do certain things unless you are the expert, but I think I've missed out on some experiences by not jumping in. And clearly you are doing great already!

I have sent my email off to the volunteer coordinator... I hope they take me!

  • Sveta replied 11 years ago

What a great story, Natalie! I also enjoyed Claire's DFS stories - it is so great you guys put your newly acquired fashion skills to a good use. I would loev to do it too but there is no DFS in my area...
I hope that this discovery that dressing well makes women more confident will help you with your "vanity" concerns. What is really shallow - caring about your appearance and expressing your inner personality through your style or being judgmental and think that being stylish is frivolous? :-)

  • velvetychocolate replied 11 years ago

I am so impressed Natalie! Brings tears to my eyes, actually - you are *so* stylish and yet, you're also extremely busy - and here you are jumping right on in, trying to help while sharing your love of fashion with others who could really use a boost. You really do have a 'good eye' and I think it's just wonderful that you're doing this. I can tell from the pictures you posted that you made those clients feel fab.

    Way to go Natalie!

Passing it on! Excellent choice, Natalie. You're practicing the principle of "blessed to become a blessing!"

(You and your clients look fab)

  • Deborah replied 11 years ago

Natalie you look great as do your two clients. Well done and congratulations on stepping out, giving up of your time and contributing to your community.

  • Kiwichik replied 11 years ago

What a great way to give back & all three of you look great.

  • krishnidoux replied 11 years ago

Good for you! Thank you for sharing this experience with the pics, it's very inspiring. I will continue to follow your story on this. This is great!

Natalie, I'm in New York with the fam, but I had to sign in to say how pleased I am that you did this! I seriously don't know how you find the time to do all you do. You are an amazing woman, and expecting, too! I'd be at home with my feet up on a day off.

You look amazing, and I'm sure your quiet, confident manner put your clients right at ease. You did a terrific job with both of them, and your right, they don't expect perfection. Some of them are just excited to get a *real* handbag, instead of the backpack or string bag they're used to carrying.

Even if you only volunteer occasionally, you will gain so much from it. It *will* combat your perfectionism (it has mine!) and it will even give you some great skills you can use if you ever want to try thrifting. Thanks so much for the shout out, but remember, Angie is the original DFS angel! I would have never had the courage to try it without her example and coaxing. And the wonderful women of YLF have helped me get a business casual capsule together so I'd have something appropriate to wear. :)

Cool post. The other tab of my browser is pointing to DFS, San Francisco; I'm seriously considering it! Thanks for sharing!

  • catgirl replied 11 years ago

You look great, Natalie, and so inspiring that you've added DFS into your life. I am so impressed with your clients, who look totally delighted. The first one especially looks like she is on her way to work already!

  • replied 11 years ago

What a great thing to do Natalie. Your clients look so happy! Did you tell them about YLF? I'd love for them to see the pictures and commentary.
Well, if that's the case and your clients happen to see this, I want to say: " Natalie's clients, you both look fab ladies!!!!! Good luck with your job search!".

  • jayne replied 11 years ago
