Closet Nirvana: complete wardrobe inventory and organization pics!

Anyone wanna peek in my closet?

I joined YLF in July (after I started wardrobe shopping for the first time in 5 years since having kids) and now that six months have passed, I think I am finally done! As in my wardrobe is pretty complete and organized now. I did a major purge a few months ago and organized my closet by type and color. And now I have done some additional re-organizing of some shelves & bought some accessory organizers at Container Store so now it's super organized. But my closet is getting rather full now. I just counted up all the pieces in my wardrobe and I am shocked! I guess I now have what would be considered a very large wardrobe. It's nearing 300 items total, not even counting loungewear/PJs/swimsuits/underwear! I'd say probably at least half of that is new items from the last six months. So, is that "OMG you're crazy" huge, or is that still within reason? Well, I guess the new year will be a good time for me to go on SYC/SYB!

Here is an inventory of what I have and some pics of my closet. Mainly doing this to be accountable to myself so I don't continue to accumulate--as fun as it is to shop, I don't have any more room and I won't be able to wear all my fab clothes as often as I'd like if I keep buying more stuff! This was a great exercise to take stock of what I have so I don't keep buying more of the same item, and to see what my relative wardrobe holes are.

I have half a walk-in closet, plus a five-drawer dresser. I don't separate clothes by season as it's pretty much always 50's-70's and often foggy year round here, so my main season is fall. Biggest discovery from my inventory--I have tons of skirts and dresses and outerwear and am relatively lacking in cardigans, shorts, and "nice" T shirts and loungewear (as opposed to souvenir dive T shirts and pajama bottoms ;-)). I'm also struck by how relatively balanced the numbers are and how evenly everything is laid out in my closet in terms of linear space per category. Looking at the list, I feel like everything is balanced pretty evenly within each category too (tops vs. bottoms, skirts vs. pants, skinny jeans vs. bootcuts, skinny belts vs. wide belts, etc). I didn't plan it that way, but I kinda like the symmetry!

Impressive but In your excitement you might have forgotten to post the photos!

  • goldenpig replied 9 years ago

No, but it took me a while to post all of them. I had to go to the desktop computer to get them. Here they are--enjoy!

  • citygirldc replied 9 years ago

Oh my. I'm so envious of your walk in closet. Maybe it's a good thing I don't have a walk in closet.

  • Jjsloane replied 9 years ago

WOW. I'm at a loss for words. Looks like a great place to find an outfit.

  • Mochi replied 9 years ago

You make the rest of us (well, let's be honest--ME) look bad! How incredible, and you bet I'll be thinking about your example when I start my own undertaking (with far fewer items than you have, but still completely daunting).

  • teri replied 9 years ago

i love that you have room for a full length mirror and a seat in your closet.
I have to always run out of my closet to go to the kitchen to see my outfit full length.

Natalie, your enthusiasm is infectious! You did a fantastic job of buying and organizing an entire wardrobe in record time! And look at the amazing results.

My own wardrobe is very tiny by comparison, but even so I have been finding it really helpful to organize and categorize it. The other thing I'm finding useful is making a note whenever I put on an outfit and have the thought "oh, I need XYZ to make this work just right..." What I'm discovering is that (in my case) XYZ is often a layering tank or T in another colour, a really good belt (I am very low on those), the right footwear (ditto), or a scarf in another colour. It's all very interesting stuff.

Natalie, thank you for sharing your beautiful closet. I think you are going to be a source of inspiration to many.

  • Angie replied 9 years ago

    VERY impressed.

  • Isis replied 9 years ago

Wow, this was so much work, Natalie! Everything, the shopping, posting K/R's, returning, and now organizing....and you are a speed demon!

If I could make a suggestion, can you move your outerwear to another closet (perhaps near the front door?). That will allow you to spread out your shirts/dresses/skirts. If they can hang more freely, they won't get wrinkled.

Do you feel finished? (I wonder if anyone ever does?)

  • nicoleb replied 9 years ago

i am drooling. Thank you for sharing this! We're in the middle of finishing the basement and i'm going to have a walk in closet so i love looking at organization ideas!

  • MNsara replied 9 years ago

Wow!! I checked the previous pics too. I can't help but notice the current closet has much more color, print, variety in it ! It's just begging me to come in and browse through the racks ;-)

The old closet contents (not even considering messiness) was much less interesting. With all those solid color shirts and dark colors, it could have been partly your DHs work shirts.

I have to think it's FUN now to walk in and start deciding what to wear! Way to go, Natalie!

  • Amy replied 9 years ago

I want to move in and play with all the pretty things! Amazing job, really. You should be proud of yourself!

  • replied 9 years ago

Natalie! There is a boutique in your house! How much fun is that? You have worked so hard to organize and store everything in a visually appealing way. You took good care of your closet and now it will take good care of you. Enjoy the fruit of your labor!

  • Lisa replied 9 years ago

Can I hire you to organize my closet? (kidding)

Seriously, you have a wonderful closet. Everything is well organized and visually very pleasing to the eye. Superb job!

  • Lantana replied 9 years ago

This is an amazing feat. Now, let the "games" begin!

  • Transcona Shannon replied 9 years ago

Wow - I wanna go shopping at Natalie's Closet Boutique!!! Your closet honestly looks better than many stores I've been in! It's wonderful you're so happy with your wardrobe now and you can easily grab and go with much less stress. Congratulations!

I love your closet! It's so well-organized and cozy and looks like a wonderful place to pick outfits.

Welcome to the organized club, my friend :)

  • soobee replied 9 years ago

Oh. My. Goodness. This should be R rated. In the "Wardrobe Porn" section. OMG. Thank you so much for posting these pics. I am going to sit here and drool over these for hours.

  • goldenpig replied 9 years ago

Thanks everyone for the kind comments! I really do feel pretty complete now. I can't promise I'm totally done, but I think I will try to go on SYC or SYB in January, at most I would probably only get a few more pieces of loungewear.

Isis, thanks for the suggestion. I did move all the long coats/parkas to the upstairs closet, and moved the belts and scarves to the dress rack. That way they won't hang over the bottom rack so much. Now the dresses have much more room to breathe!

MNSara, good pickup about the lack of color in my old wardrobe. I just looked at the pics again and you are right that my wardrobe was a lot more drab back then. And a lot more blue, light blue, bright purple, black and white etc. My color palette has shifted to more of an deep Autumn, and I love to mix bold prints and colorful clothes now.

A lot of our house is so cluttered & messy with the kids, that I often just go sit on the ottoman in the closet for a few minutes to relax and look at my rainbow of jackets. :)
