What's on your "would love to try" and "never going to try" lists?

Name three types of clothing that you have never worn but would love to try someday and three types that you would never try, even if they were the hottest fashion trend. And say why you love or hate them. I'm interested to see what's on your lists!

I would love to try:
1. Corset/bustier--to flesh out (no pun intended) my bombshell persona
2. Oxfords or heeled oxfords--just because they look like fun! So frumpy they're fab!
3. Waxed jeans--so rock and roll! I even bought a bar of Otter Wax but haven't committed because I don't want to "ruin" any of my jeans if it doesn't work out. If I had an extra pair of snakeskin skinnies they would be waxed in one hot minute!

Never want to try:
1. Denim overalls. I don't think I'd look good as a farmer. I don't even like to put my kids in overalls.
2. Romper or jumpsuit--too 70's, but not in a good way for me.
3. Drop crotch or harem pants. Ugh, that does not sound ladylike at all to me. No thank you!

Can I change the first part a bit?
I would love to try if I had the right body type for this:
    1. baggy tweedy shorts with tights and boots. I love the look so much but my bigthighs think otherwise.
    2. high-waisted pleated tapered trousers with tucked in tops. Again, love the look, don't have the right body for it.
    3. high waisted fitted midi pencil skirt. OK, my body may be OK for this one if I can ever find it.

    Don't want to try:
    1. Cropped pants - my legs are chunky as is, thank you very much!
    2. Exposed slouchy socks. Too frumpy for me!
    3. Ripped jeans - just do not appeal to me.

  • lyn* replied 12 years ago

    Looking forward to trying ...

    1. Thicker fabric shorts w/ tights & booties - these aren't pants; right?
    2. Riding a bike in a skirt! - okay; it's cheating; not really a trend.

    Don't want to try...
    1. Maxi skirts
    2. White blazers
    3. PJs in public
    4. Socks and sandals
    5. High-Low cut
    6. Poorly made pleats
    7. Shoulder-bearing tops
    8. Backless dresses
    9. Thongs for feet
    10. Thongs for bums

  • machanteuse (Lori) replied 12 years ago

I would love to try killer heels - nothing in XW is very stylish though. :( I just can't wear shoes that hurt!

I have never worn very stylish coats - maybe this is the year I will go for a trench coat...

    I would never wear...
Docs or really anything with too much of a military look. It's just not me.
Someone mentioned rompers - um, no.
A color block dress or top. I think they look great on some people but I would feel like a Mondrian painting. Again, not for me.

  • Tina replied 12 years ago

Great question GP. Lyn, you make me laugh. Your #10 reminds me of a saying I once heard, "I want my bum in my panties, not my panties in my bum".
    Anyway, on to my list,
    Want to try:
    1. a nice knee length leather skirt (maybe even one that's not black!)
    2. heeled loafers
    3. colored skinnies (not too fitted, thicker denim)

    Don't want to try:
    1. maxis, I do not like drowning in my clothes
    2. leggings
    3. rompers/jumpsuits, I got over that by grade 6, do not wish to repeat

  • cheryle (Dianthus) replied 12 years ago

Capes. I love the look but it is just too darn cold here for it to be practical.

  • DonnaF replied 12 years ago

Want to try (don't laugh at the tameness):

    1. Bailey 44 dress, probably the 3/4 sleeve shorter one because I'm short, and I'm just intrigued. I probably wouldn't buy because I'm really not a dress person.

    2. Heeled oxfords if I could find any wide enough with a 1,5 - 2.25" heel.

    3. Patterned stockings. I've been a black tights gal since elementary school, but last weekend I bought some patterned stockings at Kohl's.

4, Booties. Yeah, I'm late to the show. I've been wearing strictly Dansko Professionals on my fussy feet for the past four years, and last week my pair of Dansko booties arrived. The shape of the heel is super attractive, but these babies are almost as comfortable as my Dansko Pros and they don't hurt my bunions AT ALL.

    5. Monpei (Japanese field pants) or possibly MC Hammer pants -- but never harem pants. I guess it is because monpeis would be culturally appropriate and the coarse fabric appeals to me. I think they would be horrifying stumpifying, however.

    6. Fuller skirt/wider hemline. I think it is just a matter of finding the right fabric, cut, length, and style and PATIENCE.

    Don't want to try:

1, Leggings. Too stumpifying and reminds me of all those years of taking modern dance.

    2. Tunics. Legs are too short and too heavy from top to bottom for this to work for me.

    3. Winter shorts. Legs not good, plus who wants to see mutton dressed as lamb?

    4. Oversized anything, including extra long sleeves. As a shortie with a soft shoulder line, oversized looks sloppy, frumpy and doesn't keep me warm enough.

    5. Loafers. Arches are too low and heels are way too narrow for me to keep this style on. Ballet flats don't work too well either.

    6. Anything stiff, scratchy, uncomfortable, or otherwise severely restricts movement like the BR dresses I tried on last week.

    7. Plaid slouchy trousers because they are made to make me hate my short, fat legs. Love them on others, however!

    8. Revealing clothing. Never wore even miniskirts as a teen or when I was twenty-something so why should I start now in my late fifties? Considering trying on the body con Bailey dress is as daring as I would go.

  • lyn* replied 12 years ago

I wore a cape when I was 17; it was glorious and Lord of the Rings-like; wore it all fall to class and stuff.

I was devastated when I lost my leaf pin.

  • Aziraphale replied 12 years ago

Oooo! Fun question. All right, let me think...

    Love to try:
    1. Two-tone flat oxfords (not frumpy at all in my book!)
    2. V-shape studded leather belt -- the kind that Audra Jean makes (see: http://www.etsy.com/listing/72.....ith-nickel) -- because it's a little rock and roll. Right up my alley.
    3. skinny white jeans -- because Angie's convinced me that they look awesome. Also my eight year old has a pair and she looks so cute in them.
    4. one-shoulder dress (oops, that's one extra) -- because it's reminiscent of tribal warrior princess, wheee

    Will never try:
    1. Rompers or jumpsuits. They look goofy, imo, on grown women, especially ones older than 30. Also, even if you can get past the baby doll factor, they tend to be unflattering.
    2. Harem pants (a.k.a droopy drawers) Same sort of problem as with jumpsuits.
    3. acid-wash jeans (uurgh, 1980s flashbacks)

btw, I've never heard of waxed jeans. It sounds interesting (but if attempted by me, possibly comic routine material). Reminds me a bit of that Friends episode from about a decade ago where Ross is on a date where he's wearing leather pants, and he gets all nervous and sweaty, then goes to the bathroom and pulls them down to mid-thigh to cool down. Then he can't get them back up. He phones one of his friends, who suggests putting baby powder on his legs to absorb the moisture (doesn't work), then lotion to make his legs more slippery (also doesn't work)...and Ross wails down the phone, "The lotion and powder have made a PASTE"....OK I'm ruining it. It's much funnier if you've actually seen it. :-)

    This is a great post!

Things I would like to try, but haven't yet:

    1. Brightly colored tights. I'm actually on the fence on this one, curious about the style, but not sure if they'll make me look like I'm 8 years old.
    2. Booties. Donna, you're not the only one who's late on this bandwagon - by the time I actually buy some, they'll probably be out of style.
    3. White or solid colored men's style wristwatch. I saw some cute ones at New York & Co.

Things I will probably never try:

    1. Tights worn as pants (a la' Lady Gaga)
    2. Super high-waisted pants. I'm too short-waisted.
    3. Really full skirts with big pleats all the way around. This type of skirt was really big in the early 80's because of Princess Di's influence, but this style has NEVer looked good on me, and I have no desire to try it again.

  • goldenpig replied 12 years ago

LOL Jilly, I just wore a full pleated skirt today!

Tina, that quote is hilarious! I too am not into thongs--don't like the butt floss feeling.

Haha Elizabeth! That's why I'm scared to try it! Also I'm afraid of DH's reaction! I think much eye-rolling will ensue.

  • Jilly replied 12 years ago

I didn't watch Friends that often, Elisabeth, but I remember that episode - it was hilarious!

  • Jilly replied 12 years ago

GP, I'm sure you looked great in your skirt! And I have to make one more comment about the romper look. I actually have one that I've gotten compliments on because:
    1. It's made of a heavy dark denim material 2. I wear it when my legs are tan 3. I usually wear it with a belt, and it looks more like a matching top and pair of shorts 4. The shorts are a good length.

  • Aziraphale replied 12 years ago

Jilly, there may indeed be exceptions to the romper look. Anything to which I give an absolute "no, no way, not ever" review has certainly been worn somewhere by someone who manages to look fantastic in it! But for me in particular, I don't see the romper look working. I'm nearly 40, for cripe's sake.

  • Debby replied 12 years ago

What a fun question! Here goes...

    1) a black faux leather motorcycle jacket with pointed collar and asymmetrical zipper (I'm an animal lover; will wear leather but try to find alternatives where I can). If you grew up in the 80s and remember the first album cover for Wham! you'll know which one I mean, LOL.

If you know my style, you would think this is the last thing I would ever wear, and it goes with nothing I currently own, but I love that black-leather-over-pearls-and-a-ball-dress look. Now to find a ball to go to and a dress to wear for it...

    2) ankle length white jeans -- with short legs, I can't do cropped pants because they cut me off even shorter, but I think ankle length jeans with a heel could work, as long as the legs aren't too tapered. This one is tricky.

    3) Swiss dotted hose. I have never worn patterned hose/tights, but my favorite store nearby has them in, and they look like they would feed my ladylike obsession. Not sure what to wear them with, but maybe a black sheer pair with my black A-line skirt could work?

    4) Leopard ballet flats. I've not worn animal print before, other than a quiet print scarf, but these seem very 50s Audrey to me.

    5) Nude heels or flats. Are these still stylish? They're not really my color, but every fashion magazine says they make your legs longer, and I could so use help with that!

    Things I will never try:

1)Skinny jeans. Everyone else looks great in them. I tried some on, and it was not a happy, loving my thighs moment. Same with leggings.

    2) Baby doll dresses, which are thankfully out of style now (I think). They are unflattering to my body, and unflattering to many grown women generally.

    3) Peplums. They are supposedly trending for spring, but do not do pear-shapes like me any favors.

    4) Jumpsuits, anything with fringe (vests, purses, long skirts), or anything 70s. These items don't work with my body or with my style. This goes double for the Western/prairie looks also popular in the 70s, which I think are still out of style too.

    5) Olive green, orange, or chocolate brown anything, as they don't work with my skintone.

    6) Cage sandals and peep toe boot-like heels.

    7) ETA: cargo pants. Pockets on sides of already wide legs = not good.

Looking forward to seeing everyone else's list!

  • lyn* replied 12 years ago

@ Debby; I think the swiss dots with your black a-line sounds FABULOUS.

  • Amy replied 12 years ago

    I would love to try:

    1. Sequin pants
    2. Wide printed pants
    3. Leather jacket
    4. Bright plaid pants like Una's
    5. In general, more "urban warrior princess" outfits

I can't come up with a "would never try" list. I'll try anything at least once!

  • RandomThoughts (Andrea) replied 12 years ago

    I would love to try

    - waxed jeans - I really, really, really, REALLY want to do a DIY pair. Go otter wax! :D
    - Dropped crotch trousers. I am very curious about them in a 'toned up' fabric like wool or something slightly dressy. The odd juxtaposition interests me.
-still looking for the right PB blouse....

I am not interested in trying

    - midi skirts. Below the knee I will consider but no lower
    - socks with sandals. I know this was in last spring and I still see it around but... not for me
-any kind of pump. I have never owned pumps and I never see myself in a pair. They are just not me.

  • Jyoti replied 12 years ago

    Want to try:

    1. A cape
    2. Coloured skinny trousers
    3. Pleated slouchy trousers (I bought a pair about a year ago and then returned them and I miss them...)
    4. Backless dress (you reminded me lyn!)
    5. One-shoulder dress
    6. Men's watch
    7. Peplums
    8. Sequined leggings

    Do not want to try:
    1. Overalls
    2. Loafers
    3. Boat shoes
    4. Printed pants

Just to defend the romper, I had one and it was perfect for lounging around in the LA heat at my boyfriend's dad's house. I could sprawl out on the couch and everything would be OK. I left it there though and I think the boyfriend's burned it.

  • Contralto replied 12 years ago

    Trends I want to try:
    1. Colored skinny jeans (most likely purple, maroon or red) -- hopefully this trend isn't already on its way out!).
    2. Heeled oxfords.
    3. Flared jeans with chunky platform/wedge sandals.

Trends I don't want to try this go-around:
    1. Peplums (agree with whoever above said they're not flattering on this pear shape I've got!).
    2. Lace (have never liked it -- my wedding dress was silk taffeta without a stitch of lace on it).
    3. Neon! I don't think these colors are flattering on me (or on many at all, if I'm being honest) . . . .

  • goldenpig replied 12 years ago

Love all the ideas! You all are motivating me to start on my to-try list right away! You guys should too--put your words into action! No time like the present!

High five, Andrea! Let's make a pact! You SO need to join me in trying DIY waxed jeans. I just ordered a pair of Blue Essence black python print skinny jeans. I am going to use the Otter Wax bar that I already bought.
    http://shop.nordstrom.com/s/bl.....ltback=621
It was listed as $98 but then when I put it in my cart, it was only $49! Yay, now I won't feel so worried about trying something new on expensive jeans!

Do you all think these will look good waxed or will it be too over the top? I'm thinking the shiny coating could be kind of cool, like an actual snake skin. I keep thinking of MaryK's motto for me: "Anything worth doing is worth doing to excess" and I fully embrace it! If you're going to go rock 'n roll, why not go all the way? LOL!

  • lyn* replied 12 years ago

I think they'll look fabulous waxed, goldenpig!

  • RandomThoughts (Andrea) replied 12 years ago

I guess I'll have to get some Otter Wax.... And a pair of jeans! :D
