WIW 12/10 Urban Winter Warrior Princess

This sweater and bra is a bit of a style departure for me, but it's getting cold and I just don't feel like wearing those baggy Gap dolman sweaters that I bought last year while I was pregnant--they are even baggier on me now non-pregnant. I wanted something with a bit more of an edge to it. I found this Helmut Lang asymmetric sweater and initally I bought it 20% off at Nordstrom, but I returned it because I thought it was too low cut for me. The SA was like, "I can't believe you are returning this! And you got such a great price! I am going to buy it and take it home with me!" I was half tempted to grab it back from her, but I didn't want to fight over a sweater! After I went home I immediately regretted returning it, so I was looking around (of course it was sold out at Nordstrom) but everything else was full price. I was about to give up and pay full price, but then saw it at Shopbop and took advantage of their 25% off promotion for Black Friday, and it happened to be on sale as well, so I got a $230 sweater for $120, even better than the $180 I bought it for before! Sweet! I also bought a Helmut Lang asymetrical bra to wear under it, for a little more interesting look plus I don't have to worry about it being too low cut.

I also bought some snow boots--I've just been using DH's old snow boots from when he was a kid that have no insulation. I think it's time for me to have some adult snow boots. These are Born Zuniga and are a very dark grey with lots of UWPish straps, and a zipper so you don't have to undo the laces each time. I got them at the recent Nordstrom Half Yearly Sale. These will be useful for when we go up skiing once or twice a year. They're lined with a comfy fuzzy lining to keep my feet warm--kind of like an Ugg alternative. I figure it will be a fun winter MOTG shoe...all of the other moms and teens seem to be wearing Uggs so I wanted something a little different.

With my army green parka and rugged boots and map bag and silver spike cuff, I feel like a UWP on a secret winter mission! (I know I'm a wuss, it was 38 degrees this morning, but I was nice and toasty in my winter gear). I also wore this sweater with my cream parka and silver wedge sneakers over the weekend. Thanks for looking!

The sweater was meant to be! You look cool and edgy.

Great boots! And that's a light parka, suited to the temps just fine. Love the sweater too!

Looks amazing on you. I have a few helmut sweaters. They have great design qualities but mine are more like spring sweaters so I put them away. For a few months. Love the bra I've wanted one but was afraid there wasn't enough support for 32d/32dd. Do you need to wear another one underneath?

  • Mellllls replied 10 years ago

I love the sweater and the bra! I've never seen a bra like that before.

    YLF :)

that is a great top--seemingly simple, but special.

There is definitely something about these asymmetrical hems that works--see the comments from Suz and alaskagirl that dealt with that, with tunics and long tops. I'm going to look into that!

Such a departure from you usual style, but I love it! You look comfy, put together, and a little bit edgy. Well done :-)

Thanks ParkMommyChic, Ceit, Denise, Melllls, Caro, Unfrumped and KeepTheKey!
Ceit, I thought of you when I was buying the boots, and Denise, I thought of you when I was buying the sweater! I think you would like the bra. I'm a 32DD too (and nursing) and the bra is enough support for me. It's not like my regular padded cup bras, it's just like a tube top with some straps on top, but I'm not wearing anything else under it. It comes in a tank version too. UF, I'll look up the threads--I do like the asymmetrical hem!

The sweater is gorgeous on you and the boots look super cozy!! Great finds.

Seriously great! And I can't believe you got one of Helmut Lang bra tops.

I have been lusting after the HL bra top for ages.  This outfit looks really good Natalie.  It provides a bit of edge and still looks like 'you'.  Can you give us some feedback on the bra?  How is the support?  I am very keen to add this to my wardrobe but I am worried that it won't provide the support i need for my double DD bust.

This is totally different from your ladylike matched dragonfly ensemble, and so fab!  The cream sweater is gorgeous on you.  Good call on the winter boots - the right gear really does make all the difference.

  • E replied 10 years ago

Wow! You definitely look edgy, and you pull edgy off just as well as you do ladylike. 38 is almost freezing, of course you needed a coat! :)

  • Angie replied 10 years ago

Killer to the power of Killer. Add this one to the best of 2013. Queen Fun & Flirty totally edged it up with sass that is true to her style. The fact that your sweater is white has made all the difference. Well done, Natalie. xo

Thanks Suz, Anna, Deborah, Emily, E and Angie! Anna, the HL bra was one of my "WWAW" (What Would Anna Wear?) purchases--pushing the envelope for me, but fun to go a little edgier for a change. Emily, I agree, it's kind of schizophrenic to wear the dragonfly one day and this UWPish outfit the next. But UWP is my aspirational or shadow style, so I like to play around with that. I think Una once said that her shadow style is ladylike Kate Spade, so we are two sides of a coin! Deborah and Denise, I think you'd like this bra. I wore this bra all day today and did not have any issues with support. (I wasn't jogging or exercising, but I was running after the kids...) I'm a 32DD. It actually worked well as a nursing bra because I could just slip it up and down. There's a rubber grip band around the top and bottom to keep it in place. I sized up one size--by the sizing chart I should have been a small and I bought the sweater in a small, but I bought the bra in M to have more room. I don't think it would work well for really large busts, but for small to medium it's fine.

The boots were super comfy! Like wearing warm fuzzy slippers all day, but with plenty of support! I love them!

One funny thing about the sweater--I took DS2 for a checkup, and afterward I was wearing him in the Ergo carrier. A nurse came up behind me while I was walking down the hall and grabbed my sweater and said, "I'm just fixing your sweater, it's crooked." Then she looked a little mystified when the right side of the sweater wouldn't go down to match the left. LOL! Asymmetric hem!

And thanks Angie for the K2K!

LOVE this, Natalie! You look super fab with the bit of edginess in this outfit.

  • Jaime replied 10 years ago

Fantastic! I had never seen that bra before - perfect with the sweater!

  • Sveta replied 10 years ago

Ladylike Edgy - you are a real expert on it, Natalie. I really like this sweater (but still wish for higher neckline on it, if just for the sake of warmth...)
Angie is spot on with K2K rating - it is superb!

  • Deborah replied 10 years ago

Thanks for the feedback Natalie. The appeal of this "bra" is it work well under some of my black summer dresses that show bra straps (which I don't like). This bra would solve that problem and add some she and add some interest. Hmmmmm

  • rae replied 10 years ago

Oh, wow, I love everything about this! Now that you and Suz have diagonal sweaters, I find myself wanting one sooo bad, lol. Amazing new boots, too. Yes, it is time you had your own adult version. Also very happy to see the map bag on such a cool adventure!

  • Sharon replied 10 years ago

This is a great look. it's fun to see you play with your shadow style. This outfit is very different to your more lady-like outfits, but it still looks very you.

  • Karie replied 10 years ago

This is my favorite look of yours so far! The boots, the sweater, THAT BRA = total fabness!

  • shedev replied 10 years ago
